We went for a walk with Robert and his donkeys today. We thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience taking in the wonderful views whilst relaxing with the friendly and fun donkeys. Robert was a very welcoming and knowledgeable guide. Our two hours flew by and we could have easily gone on for longer. We both felt so relaxed afterwards. We would highly recommend this activity for anyone wishing to do something a little different whilst in the Algarve.

We did a two hour walk with Robert and his donkeys, Lucia, Camaron, Josephina, Frederico and Luisa. Robert is a fascinating person with a truly unique biography! He has a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna in the area. If you are looking for a tranquil experience away from the discos of the Algarve, you will not be disappointed.

The donkey walk was a wonderful experience. The sanctuary is located at a by-road at about 10 minutes distance from the national road N266. It was easily reachable by car, we parked it on a junction short before the entrance to the farm because the entranceway was steep and unpaved. The farm itself is a beautiful and peaceful place and we enjoyed looking around in the garden. Robert and Claudia, the owners, were very welcoming and explained a lot on the nature and culture. The donkeys are in good condition and obviously enjoyed the tour, too. They are gentle and well-behaved. During the walk we took several breaks to enjoy a spectacular view and cuddle the donkeys. Highly recommended for both adults and families with children!

Ein wunderschönes und einzigartiges Erlebnis abseits von Hektik und Tourismus inmitten der Natur, nicht nur für Kinder, da die Esel super lieb und zutraulich sind und man auch auf ihnen reiten kann, sondern auch für Erwachsene, vor allem Großstädter wie uns ;) Robert hat viel Spannendes und Interessantes über sein Leben und die Natur und natürlich das Leben mit seinen Eseln zu erzählen. Wir hatten im April ein wunderschönes Familienevent mit 2 glücklichen Kindern und 2 mindestens genauso glücklichen Eltern bei dir Robert, 1000 Dank!!! Es war wirklich Highlight unseres Urlaubs! We had a wonderful hour with Robert, Claudia and the donkeys! I would recommend this experience to anyone who wants to learn more about donkeys, experience the true Portuguese mountains and meet very great people.

It was a great experience to walk through the hills of Monchique with Robert and his five lovely donkeys. While it was a pity that the landscape was somewhat destroyed by the fire from a year ago, and therefore not as pretty to look at as it could have been, it was interesting to learn from Robert about the after effects of it. We had a great chat with Robert about flora, fauna and technology. And the donkeys were a delight to groom and to look at, they seem very happy with Robert. Thanks for the experience! Very recommendable!

Wir haben eine 2 stündige eselwanderung unternommen. Robert mit seinen Eseln ist einfach super! Die Tiere dürfen frei laufen, man kann sie natürlich auch streicheln, das Tempo geben die Esel vor. Die Umgebung für die Wanderung ist der Hammer. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder. Auch super für Familien mit Kindern. Liebe Grüße Laura und Patrick

We went on a wonderful 3 hour walk today with Robert, Claudia and five donkeys. The animals are very friendly and could roam freely around us during the walk. Robert told us lots of interesting things about his life with the donkeys and about the nature and landscape around us. We enjoyed great views all the way to the coast and lots of donkey-pets. We can absolutely recommend this tour!

Fantastic afternoon! Robert and Claudia are friendly and knowledgeable and obviously care deeply for their 5 donkeys. They have an incredible story to tell. The donkeys are full of personality and are very affectionate. Bring a large bag of carrots and/or apples. You will not be disappointed.

Eine Wanderung mit Robert und seinen Eseln ist ein wundervolles Erlebnis! Die Art und Weise, wie Robert mit den Tieren umgeht, ist sehr beeindruckend. Die Tiere leben frei in der natürlichen Umgebung. Von Robert haben wir viel Wissenswertes über die Tiere, die Natur und die schöne Umgebung des Monchique-Gebirges erfahren. Er ist ein unglaublich sympathischer und interessanter Guide. Nehmt euch die Zeit für dieses Erlebnis.

Leider nicht einen Esel angetroffen...Wir sehen uns die Esel immer vorher an, bevor wir etwas buchen. Um zu sehen, wie sie wirklich leben. Also unvorbereitet. Leider schon zuviel trauriges gesehen. Vielleicht beim nächsten Mal. Wünschen eine schöne Zeit...

Wir haben eine Wanderung am späten Nachmittag zum See gemacht.Es hat uns sehr gut gefallen.Robert geht liebevoll und ruhig mit seinen Eseln um. Die Ruhe in Monchique war sehr angenehm. Sehr zu empfehlen für alle, die eine kleine Auszeit in der Natur suchen.

Een geweldige leuke interessante wandeling! Robert is een enorm fascinerend man met een ongelooflijk mooi verhaal ! Hij verteld over zijn ezels zoals niemand anders kan .. je krijgt meer respect voor het dier .echt de moeite waard om eens te doen! De kinderen vinden het ook geweldig!

Thanks for the amazing time! The walk with Robert was a unique experience: Robert himself is very interesting to talk to, including to learn about his past experiences with the donkeys. The five donkeys are full of character, and it is quite entertaining to cuddle with them and watch them playing and playfully nudging each other. I recommend this experience for anyone who wants a relaxing time, or have a new experience getting to know all thei donkeys' funny quirks. Definitely try this if you are in the area :)

Great host Robert who clearly adores and loves his donkeys. The donkeys were lovely friendly and were so happy to walk alongside you. The scenery was breathtaking and beautiful views. Well worth a visit great value for money!!

Wir hatten einen wunderschönen Spaziergang mit Robert und seinen Eseln. Eine tolle Art, das Land mal abseits der Strände kennenzulernen. Unsere Kinder überlegen immer noch, wie lange sie sparen müssen, um sich Esel halten zu können. An amazing experience! Robert was such a great host and accommodated us on very short notice. He shared his story and his time on building such a fantastic project.We had a brilliant time with the Donkeys who were so friendly.

Wir hatten einen tollen Spaziergang mit Robert und seinen 5 Eseln. Weil es große Esel sind, war es für unseren Junior wie Pferdereiten, inkl. Galopp. :-)

Eine wundervolle Tour! Kann ich nur weiter empfehlen! Die Esel sind super glücklich und werden nicht angeleint. Sie können frei rumlaufen, was ich einfach nur wundervoll finde Der Besitzer liebt seine Eseln und kümmert sich sehr gut um diese. Er hat ebenfalls sehr viel zu sagen wo ich nur aufgeregt zuhören konnte. Die Eseln sind sehr zutraulich und sind kleine „Models“ man kann super mit Ihnen ein Erinnerungsfoto schießen Im großen und ganzen kann und werde ich diese Tour weiter empfehlen!

Zum Abschluss unseres Urlaubs an der Algarve buchten wir bei Robert für uns und unsere 2 Kinder (4&6) eine einstündige Tour mit den "happy donkeys" :) Die Esel dürfen sich frei bewegen und sind äußerst freundliche und auch etwas verfressene :) Tiere. Die Kinder durften auf den Eseln reiten, die anderen Esel liefen bei der Tour frei mit. Die Landschaft und Roberts Geschichte / Leben mit den Eseln sind beeindruckend. Es war tolles unvergessliches Erlebnis und wir empfehlen die äußert freundliche Begegnung mit Robert und seinen Eseln gerne weiter!

Certainly one of the best experience in Algarve. In total: A tranquil, harmonious experience with an excellente and modest guide, 5 funny and cuddly donkey's in a beautiful setting. While walking in a group we learned about the donkey's as well as the flora and fauna of this piece of world. The price is reasonable and we were happy to contribute and recommend this to everyone that is looking for a great experience far away from touristy spots.

Ein absoluter Highlight meines Portugal Trips. Einmalige Erfahrung, die jeden Cent wert war. Wunderbare Natur und tolle Tiere! A delightful trip walking the mountainside of Monchique with Robert and his donkeys. This experience is so different from the hustle and bustle of the Algarve. Just imagine , a tranquil walk surrounded by the aromas of Eucalyptus and Mimosas , wonderful views of the surrounding hills , all the while accompanied by Robert (with his wealth of botanical knowledge ), and his 5 donkeys , each of whom have their own personalities. This is a trip I would recommend to anyone

What an amazing and unique experience! Beautiful scenery in the Portuguese hilltops. We walked for about an hour and even with the rain, we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I've been to other 'sanctuaries' where the animals were not treated well, but not this place. Robert loves and cares so deeply about all 5 of his donkeys, you can tell. He's passionate and has much respect for them.

This was truly a beautiful experience. I highly recommend this to everybody that is interested in donkeys and nature. We talked to Robert about everything; animals, living off the land and our own relationship with nature. He is a very kind and gentle person, with a lot of skills and truly loves and cares for his donkeys. We will definitely be coming back!

The story of Robert and and his donkeys is incredibly interesting and it was so nice to speak to him during the walk. His plot of land and house are beautifully kept and show his passion for nature, permaculture and anything he turns his hand to. Highly recommended!

Nous avons par hasard croisé la route d'un homme avec ses ânes et probablement une famille de touristes. Nous avons roulé au pas et nous nous sommes arrêtés pour prendre des photos. En 2 mots l'homme nous a dit que nous devrions apprendre à demander de prendre des photos avant de tourner les talons. Drôle de façon d'accueillir des touristes et potentiels clients !

Deutsch/English Ich hatte das Vergnügen, die Anfänge des engagierten Projektes, für Esel und Gäste eine gesunde und attraktive Lebensumgebung zu gestalten, von der man sich gar nicht mehr lösen will, bis heute zu erleben und zu begleiten. Es gibt einen Wilden Wasserfall mit Bach, quellfrisches sauberes Wasser, schattige Plätze, Picknick-Möglichkeiten, verwunschene Fußwege, Felsen und vieles mehr. Es kann gezeltet oder ein bis zwei Wohnmobile abgestellt werden und für später wird es auch einfache feste Behausungen für Gäste geben. Robert Nestmann ist Inhaber, Organisator und Leiter des Projektes, seine Mitarbeiter sind von Zeit zu Zeit Gäste, Woofer (internationale Farmhelfer gegen Kost und Logis) und natürlich seine derzeit fünf Esel. Die Esel sind das Highlight, sehr freundlich, gepflegt und immer an Streicheleinheiten und Leckerlis interessiert. Sie kommen durchaus von selbst auf die Menschen zu und fordern Streicheleinheiten, nicht anders wie Katzen und Hunde. Ihre Ruhe überträgt sich auf die Menschen, die so schnell den Alltagsstress vergessen. Das Konzept der Wanderungen mit Esel wird hier anders als sonst üblich gelebt. Man geht immer mit der ganzen Herde los und alle Esel dürfen frei laufen, so daß man die außergewöhnliche Chance hat, sie in ihrem natürlichen Verhalten zu beobachten. Die Gegend am Südhang des Picota bietet zwar viele Steigungen, aber auch ebenen Strecken. Insgesamt läßt sich alles mit normaler Kondition bewältigen. Die Fotos beim Projekt zeigen auch viele Szenen an der Küste. Die langgezogenen Sandstrände mit blaugrünem Wasser und den großen Wellen liegen an der Westküste, allesamt in einem Naturschutzgebiet, in dem es keine großen Hotelanlagen gibt. Die Bilder mit den rotorangenen Felsen dagegen befinden sich an der Südküste. West- und Südküste sind vom Projekt aus in ungefähr 45 Minuten per Auto erreichbar. Das Projekt ist somit nicht nur ein idealer Entspannnungsort, sondern auch perfekt für Ausflüge aller Art zu Sehenswürdigkeiten der Algarve. Kinder sind auch sehr willkommen und dürfen die Esel sogar reiten. I had the pleasure of experiencing and accompanying the beginnings of the very involved project, to design for donkeys and guests a healthy and attractive environment, where you never would like to dismiss. There is a wild waterfall with creek, fresh spring water, shady places, picnic possibilities, enchanted footpaths, rocks and much more. One can camp with a tent there or up to two mobile homes could be parked and for later there will also be simple permanent accommodations for guests. Robert Nestmann is owner, organizer and director of the project, his staff are from time to time guests, Woofers (international farm helpers against food and lodging) and of course his donkeys, currently five. The donkeys are the highlight, very friendly, well-kept and always interested in strokes and goodies. They come by themselves to humans and demand hugging, similar like cats and dogs. Their calmness is transferred to the people who quickly forget their everyday stress. The concept of hiking with donkeys is practised here in a different way than usual. You always go with the whole herd and all the donkeys are allowed to run freely, so you have the extraordinary chance to observe them in their natural behavior. The area on the southern slope of the Picota offers many ways up and down, but also even pathes. Overall, everything can be made with normal conditions. The photos on the project also show many scenes on the coast. The long sandy beaches with blue-green water and the big waves belong to the west coast, all in a nature reserve, where there are no large hotel facilities. The images with the redorange rocks are at the south coast. West and south coast can be reached by car in about 45 minutes far from the project. The project is not only an ideal place to relax, but also perfect for all kinds of excursions to the sights of the Algarve. Children are also very welcome and even allowed to ride the donkeys.

Wer Rummelplatz-Esel erwartet oder ein störrisches Tier am Halfter zerren möchte, ist bei den Happy-Donkeys komplett an der falschen Adresse. Wir (3 Pers.) wanderten mit einer glücklichen! Eselherde, bestehend aus 5 Tieren, die den zweistündigen Spaziergang in vollen Zügen genossen haben - so wie wir auch. Unser Wander- und Eselführer Robert hat uns sowohl über die Tiere, als auch über die übrige Fauna und Flora viel Interessantes erzählt, auch seine eigene Geschichte ist sehr außergewöhnlich und inspirierend. Der Walk war in jeder Hinsicht eine Bereicherung für unseren Urlaub. Unsere Ausrüstungsempfehlungen: festes Schuhwerk (z.B. Turnschuhe) und Kleidung, die durch Esel und Weg staubig werden darf. Karotten und andere Leckereien müssen Sie nicht mitbringen, das Füttern der Tiere ist nicht erlaubt.

We had a great trip with Robert and his 5 donkeys. The place is absolut special! From the mountain where Robert lives you have a wonderful view over the Algarve until the ocean. Our two young boys (1 en 2,5 years old) enjoyed the walk with the donkeys a lot! We learned a lot about the donkeys and the nature. Robert was a great guid with huge knowledge about the animals and the nature. It surely was one of the nicest things we did in the 3 weeks vacation at the Algarve. Thanks a lot, Robert!

Absolute fabulous experience! The pieceful countryside of Serra da Monchique is so beautiful and it is great watching the free running donkeys eating and eating and eating. I dind't know before that donkeys can be so quick and hungry :D Taking pictures of them was kind of sports but also great fun! And it was worth it, I love my donkey pics! Special thanks to Robert for the nice and interesting walk with your cute donkeys. My friends and me really enjoyed it! See you next time!
