A friend of mine had a terrible experience here. She was told that because she’s a transwoman, she would not be allowed to stay in the women’s room. After attempting to discuss the problematic nature of such exclusionary practices, the owner of the hotel began to act in an even more offensive manner. As I read through all the comments here, I wonder about what our expectations are of the people who provide us with accomodation as we travel and how we can collectively address discrimination in the places that we stay. The bigotry shown by the owner of this hostel is very telling and I would not recommend staying here.

I went to Nazaré last week and all the rooms and bed spaces in the hostels were booked except for one bed in the female dorm. When I told the owner that I am a transgender woman and that I would like to stay there, he told me that he'd have to check with the four other women staying in that room since they paid extra to stay with only women and if one of them said no I wouldn't be able to stay there. To begin with it's really problematic that women have to pay extra in order to be in dorms without men. But to get along with the story, I really didn't want any drama, I just wanted a place to sleep, and had there been space in the mixed dorm I would have gone along with it, but when he said that the four women weren't there and I'd have to wait for their decisions, I realized how humiliating and unacceptable the situation was - So, I would have to wait for four women, complete strangers, to get back, perhaps at separate times, perhaps not until midnight, and then let them scan me up and down to see if I was "woman enough" according to their standards - instead of the owner just accepting that I'm a trans woman and allowing me to stay there and understanding that if anyone had a problem with that they'd be the ones discriminating and that discrimination is unacceptable. I live my life 24/7 as a trans woman in this society and am subjected to male violence and overt sexual harassment every day of this life (yes, also several times on the beach in Nazaré during my 24 hour stay), and if anyone is in need of staying somewhere away from men it is me. I tried to tell the owner this, but he would not listen. He said "it's not my problem", and I answered "well, since you're the owner and you're refusing me from staying here it is your problem and would you please listen to me". He wouldn't, and I almost started crying. Finally I had had enough and told him I was leaving and that I would write a bad review (which I am doing now), and then he got very angry and said good luck with your transition and made a gesture simulating really big breasts and then said "you know what, even if all the girls in the room say it's okay for you to stay there, I'll say no to you". I left, went to the square and broke down crying. Luckily I had met some people on the bus to Nazaré, one of which's father lives there and he helped me to find a room elsewhere for myself which wasn't too costly. But this was such a horrible experience when all I wanted was a place to sleep.

My friend was denied a room in the womens dorm because the owner said it is not for transwomen. He also insulted her. Horrible place! No recommendation for lgbtiq* people!

Amiable owner, speaking good french and english. Well run, tidy and with good coffee and a french petit-dejeuner style breakfast. Perfectly situated both near the lovely beach and the upper town. I'll be back!

The stay in lab hostel was very comfortable and neat. Thd location perfect to explord the beach and funicular.

Great hostel. They accommodated my friend and I at the last minute (we arrived in the evening looking for a room) and they made sure we were looked after. Antonio (the owner) is a big character and he seems tough but is actually very sweet and kind. One morning, he drove my friend and I around the whole of Nazare, showing us around and introducing us to the locals. This kind of crazy hospitality is only possible in this lovely town. Thanks Antonio, you are a legend! We will be back.

Kurz: Auf jeden Fall immer wieder. Lang: Ein Hostel in perfekter Lage in Nazaré, einem Ort, der weitaus mehr zu bieten hat, als große Wellen. Die Mitarbeiter und der Besitzer waren jederzeit mehr als freundlich und herzlich. Sie haben einem das Gefühl gegeben, bei Ihnen zu Hause zu sein. Die Zimmer waren sauber, modern, hell und freundlich, mit dem gewissen Extra und der Liebe zum Detail. Gemütlicher kleiner Aufenthaltsraum mit Sitzecke laden zu angenehmen Gesprächen und einem leckeren Frühstück mit selbstgemachter Marmelade ein. Wir sind mit Baby angereist und waren begeistert von der Freundlichkeit und Herzlichkeit mit der wir und unsere Kleine aufgenommen wurden.

Otima acomodacao. Confortavel e limpo. Bem central. Sai passear . Alem da praia. Pela cidade. Comprei tecidos. Entrei em mercadinho. Conheci as ruelas.

Sehr sauber. Wir hatten einen Familienzimmer mit eigenem Bad. Für Portugal unüblich gab es Schallschutzfenster mit Doppelverglasung, somit auch abends Ruhe und Erholung trotz der zentralen Lage. Frühstück war lecker (vor allem der Kaffee) und die Mitarbeiter sehr zuvorkommend.

Go here, it's the best hostel in all of Nazaré, I promise. Antonio is an awesomely welcoming host. I can almost guarantee that you'll make travel friends here. Clean, warm and comfy rooms plus a good breakfast to start the day.

The owner is really kind and makes you feel very welcomed. The place was clean and the breakfast was magnificent:) It only takes 10 minutes from the bus stop and the beach is within 1 min walk. 주인 분 친절하시고 깨끗하고 조식도 맛났어요. 버정까지 10분, 해변까지는 1분도 채 안걸립니다. 다만 샤워실 부스 문 이용이 조금 힘들고 라디에이터가 침대랑 멀리 떨어져있어서 살짝 추웠어요. 헤어드라이기는 달라고 하면 주십니다!

Super hostel! Nette und hilfsbreite Mitarbeiter. Sauber und bequeme Zimmer. Nur 50 Meter zu ewig langen Sandstrand. Auch nicht weit zum Aufzug hoch zum Leuchtturm.

Even though I only had one night at Lab Hostel I really enjoyed it and had a good time there! It's super clean, stuffs super nice, friendly and helpful and there's nothing to complain about (: might keep in mind, that there's no real kitchen which wasn't a big deal, even better if one has to prepare something there's no need to do dishes, the stuff will take care for that, thanks again very much :-)

Overall : Not bad... Very clean, well furnished, centrally located. Welcoming and friendly. Nice design. Some faults with bathrooms and the rooms, mainly in that lack of space in the rooms I.e. you end up falling over other peoples luggage, bags etc. Also no air-conditioning meaning you have to have windows open and therefore noise, but nothing so bad. Very few options to hang anything up (especially in bathroom as there was nothing whatsoever! That's quite a serious oversight ) - and flooding. Shower and WC as one. Poor design of room especially with no electricity point for upper bunks. Overall : C (6/10) Location: B (very central) Cleansiness : B+ Design: C+ Space: C Breakfast: C+ Wi-fi: B Rooms: C- (not enough space and nowhere to hang anything and no electricity points for upper bunks) Bathrooms: D (nowhere to hang ANYTHING) Reception: B (quite helpful) Facilities: C+ Public Areas : C+ Noise: C-

Posizione ottima. Stanza privata molto pulita e confortevole. Bagno pulito. Colazione buona con torta handmade.

Hôtel très bien situé, à deux pas de la plage. Le propriétaire est très chaleureux et de bon conseil. Le parking étant un peu difficile et payant dans le quartier, il nous a tout de suite indiqué une rue calme ou le stationnement était gratuit. Propreté irréprochable dans les chambres ainsi que tout l'hôtel. Petit déjeuner agréable, bref une excellente expérience !

Very nice owner with humor. Very good looking and clean hostel with a nice breakfast setting. Close to the beach. Have had nice fellow guest who this place seem to attract. Try it!

Very nice and clean place. I enjoyed it a lot. Excellent staff. It only lacks of common kitchen though. But for the rest excellent.
