The O Cauteleiro Statue is a fun monument sculpted by Fernando Assis and placed at Largo Trindade Coelho in front of Igreja and Museo de São Roque in 1987.
The figure depicts a local lottery ticket seller. Notice the shiny ticket being held in his right hand. Passers-by rub the ticket as a gesture of fondness and for luck!
Note: There is a historic kiosk, Quiosque de São Roque and a few seats, just next to the statue. This makes for a nice place to take break from sightseeing and to enjoy a coffee, wine or soft drink near O Cauteleiro Statue.

A life-size bronze statue of a lottery ticket seller (known in Portuguese as "O Cauteleiro") portrays a street vendor, one of the familiar personnages of Lisbon street life, the lottery being as popular in the city as Ginjinha joints, and in the past closely associated with the capital of Portugal, similarly as Pasteis de Nata (freshly baked sweet custards) are an inherent aspect of today's Lisbon, its virtual emblem.
The statue was inaugurated on 18 November 1987, the 204th anniversary of the National Lottery in Portugal.

The O Cauteleiro Statue is an interesting tribute to local lottery ticket sellers. It's meant to be fun tribute to the common man and is a nice distraction from the usual monuments to the over-privileged.
The sculpture depicts a rather short man with a smile on his face. He is wearing a uniform and holding out a lottery ticket. Visitors like to rub ticket for good luck and it's noticeably shiny from all the passers-by trying to acquire a bit of good fortune.
