A moving monument to the people trafficed through Lagos and Portugal. Sensitively put together with a focus on the barbarity the humans who were torn from their homes suffered. Excellently informed and helpful staff too

Núcleo museológico muito interessante. Achei falta de mais informação e espólio referentes à escavação do Vale da Gafaria. Compensa comprar o bilhete combinado.

Museu pequeno, bonito, com "tecnologia", que pode ser visitado em pouco tempo, num local de fácil acesso. Eu curto muito visitas a museus! Eu poderia dormir em alguns para não perder tempo fazendo idas e voltas. E mesmo quando o museu é pequeno, como esse, dá vontade de ficar mais tempo.

Museu que tenta preencher um (imenso) vazio na memória histórica e cultural de Portugal - o papel iniciador dos Portugueses no estabelecimento da escravatura moderna, que começou no dia 8 de Agosto de 1444, em Lagos, tal como nos conta o cronista Gomes Eanes de Zurara, na sua “Crónica do Descobrimento e Conquista da Guiné”, capítulo XXIV:
"... Uns tinham as caras baixas e os rostos lavados com lágrimas, olhando uns contra os outros; outros estavam gemendo mui dolorosamente, esguardando a altura dos céus (…) outros feriam seu rosto com suas palmas, lançando--se estendidos em meio do chão”.
Um imenso caudal de sofrimento humano ainda sem nomes. Se os Alemães pediram oficialmente desculpas pelos horrores nazis, porque é que nós, os Portugueses, não pedimos, da mesma forma, desculpa por termos iniciado na Europa um horror que durou séculos e foi dos engenhos de açúcar do Brasil às plantações de algodão dos EUA?

Das war einmal ein Sklavenmarkt, der heute als Ausstellung von dieser Zeit dient.
Mann sollte den Eintritt zusammen mit dem Forte da Ponta da Bandeira und der Igreja de Santo António kaufen, ist günstiger. Wenn man die Eintrittskarten hier kauft, hat man freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal, welches einem auch Auskunft gibt, nicht wie an den anderen Orten.

Casa museo explicativa acerca del mercado de esclavos traídos de las colonias portuguesas en África. Son dos pisos de museo y merece la pena conocer las condiciones y modo de vida en que los esclavos eran prácticamente arrancados de sus patrias para ser vendidos y explotados como mera mercancía. Sin duda no deja indiferente

Museo disposto su due piani con ingressi distinti, descrizioni solo in portoghese e in inglese. Da visitare per approfondire uno degli aspetti importanti della storia di questa nazione. Possibili biglietti combinati con chiesa di Sant'Antonio e forte.

Der alte Sklavenmarkt von Lagos. Die Sklave wurden außerhalb der Stadt verkauft aber hier war der Vertrieb für Menschen. Künstler haben hier auf die dunkle Seite von Portugal aufmerksam gemacht. Ein Muss für Besucher von Lagos. Es wird einem richtig schlecht wenn man sich von den Studenten der Kunsthochschule, die dort arbeiten und die Ausstellungen begleiten, die Geschichten der Sklaven erzählen lässt. Trauriger Ort... Übrigens wurden tote Sklaven außerhalb der Stadt zusammen mit verendetem Vieh, auf der städtischen Mülldeponie entsorgt.

A small exploration of the invlovement of the Portugese in the slave trade pre dating much of other European countries. English translations rather odd and quite surprising given the effort to produce techy displays. Ground floor is accessible, but second floor can only be accessed via stairs.

Preiswert, das war es auch schon. Mehr schön anzusehen, als wirkliche Information über den Sklaven Handel. Keinerlei Hinweise über die Unmenschlichkeit und Brutalität. Wer jemals nach Liverpool kommen sollte, kann sich im dortigen Museum eingehend informieren.

Kann man mal machen. An einem verregneten Tag hats uns dahin gezogen. Die 3 Euro Eintritt pro Person sind okay. Sie haben probiert mit maximal wenig Ausstellungsfläche und Ausstellungsstücken das Beste rauszuholen. Aber selbst wenn man sich alles durchliest ist man in einer halben Stunde durch.

The museum of slavery is beautifully set up but that's where anything useful ends. The receptionist on the first floor barely looked up from her computer screen and spent all our visit looking at cat memes. The exhibits themselves are poorly organised, the entries (at least translated in English) are distasteful and racist and worse, there is no attempt by either the curator or those working at the museum to offer any good or educational service.
The museum is quite frankly offensive, shoddily thought out and a testament to the intransigence of racism and white supremacist thinking in Lagos, Portugal.

Não era bem o que esperava.
Museu com 2 pisos que a ligação é feita pela rua. Está tecnologicamente avançado, mas para mim peca por não ter material físico e fotográfico relativo aos escravos e da forma que o mercado funcionava.

Smutne miejsce w portugalskiej historii. Z jednej strony targ niewolników, a z drugiej strony kościół Igreja Santo Antonio w którym złoto wylewa się że ścian. Widać skąd to bogactwo pochodziło.

Not recommended. I would have expected to find documents and pictures telling and explaining this atrocious period in Portugal and rest of Europe from an historical and human point of you. The visit is not worth a penny.

Interesante lugar histórico por constituir el antiguo mercado de esclavos. Cuenta con una importante colección de documentos y fotografías relacionadas con la esclavitud y liberación de esclavos. También se exponen cartografías que muestran los lugares de donde traían los esclavos y a dónde los llevaban. Es triste pero muy interesante.

Decepcionante por 3€. Solo muestra 3 cosas relacionadas con el momento de auge de Lagos como punto de llegada de los esclavos. Podrían presentar proyecciones, vídeos explicativos de las rutas de los esclavos, etc. En general, información que motive, interese y conmueva al público.
Además, no está adecuado a minusválidos o carritos.

A museum with few artefacts.. only half a dozen original items on display. Electronic screens depicted in Portuguese and English give a brief summary of the slave trade but it does not go in to much detail at all. Does very little to explain the situation in which slaves were captured and transported and exploited. If you know absolutely nothing about the history of slavery then visit the place, otherwise spend the €3 entrance fee on a couple of glasses of wine at a local wine bar and look up Wikipedia!

Two story structure, housing a modest museum about the Slave trade. It was formally a military office, that the slaves walked past, as they offloaded from the ships. Docent is well informed about the middle passage, and when questioned, was able to answer questions about the number of slaves per vessel.
Directed me to the plaza, before the former city entrance, where the slaves were actually auctioned.
Electronic tablets are issued for the tour can be pointed at exhibits for extended information. Excellent maps of the various slave trade routes.
An institution worth supporting.

Indrukwekkende plaats, een plek waar eens de Europese slavenhandel floreerde. Die negatieve sfeer is nog steeds voelbaar. Verder wel een mooi plein en in de tijd dat wij er waren ontzettend mooi weer.

The Mercado dos Escravos (Slave Market) is not what it seems to claim to be. The historical building, with a modest exhibition about the Portuguese slave trade, may have been this or may have been that, but once inside the museum itself denies that it was a market. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit especially for the uninformed.

Small interesting interactive. Attractive, modern displays. But could do more to convey the horror and suffering of slavery. And how did slavery end. Perhaps a nod to modern day slavery which still exists today.

We had a short (20 minute) visit to this small but interesting museum to the slave trade that was connected to Lagos, Portugal. Upstairs they give you a tablet that connects with the displays and is full of information. Very well organized and informative. No need for a long visit though.
