We were looking for a private tour of the Douro Valley with a chance to enjoy some good food and wine. Maia Tours was very reasonably priced and offered the ability for us to include a few things we wanted to do. The owner/driver Ricardo Maia was a great choice. Ricardo asked us what we wanted to do while suggesting things he knew we would fine interesting. He booked a lunch reservation and wine tasting for us in advance and his recommendation was excellent. He arrived on time at 9:30 AM and provided us with a very comfortable vehicle with lots of room for the 4 of us. He was very professional in appearance and manner. His English was excellent and he was able to answer our questions with ease. He took the old highway up the valley that meandered through wine country and the many old town along the way. We stopped at a local monastery that dates back to Roman times and had a chance to view some of the old buildings and the bridge that is still in use today. He suggested a sweet shop for a mid-morning snack and it was delicious. As we continued up the valley there was lots to see and learn about. We drove along highway N222 recognized as one of the most magnification drives in Europe and it did not disappoint. Our visit to Quinta Da Pacheca was arranged by Ricardo in advance. We were welcomed at the door and invited into the restaurant where we enjoyed a wonderful lunch with some great wine. After lunch we had the opportunity to taste some more of the award winning wines made at the winery. After a full day we headed down the new highway back to Porto arriving home as planned at 6:30 PM. I highly recommend Maia Tours if you are planning to see the Douro Valley, reasonable in price but excellent in service.
