We had an excellent stay at the Quinta - we spent two nights there. It is located just next to Covelinhas train station, and we were greeted by Manuel, who together with Silvia, were our excellent guides for our stay. The lodging is small, and well appointed, with 5 rooms available as well as a sitting room (and pool, for when it is warmer). Breakfast is included, and you can reserve a seat at table for lunch as well as dinner. The food is prepared on site, and is hearty home cooking. We travelled with a 4 year old (I don't suspect they see many toddlers on the quinta!) and she was very well looked after by everyone. The Quinta tour was very informative, although due to weather we were unable to see the actual vines - I am told the views from the top are spectacular - certainly the ones from the balcony were brilliant too. The tour ended with a tasting, and it was great to see a journey of the wine through different vinification processes, as well as seeing some small parcel wines give a great impression of the terroir. The ports are good quality, but the focus is on the 'table' wine. These were served with all meals, and were available to purchase. We would recommend coming by car, as there is little else to do in the near vicinity - you can cross the river, or else get a train to Pinhao or Regua. If you are looking for a small quinta that does things a bit differently and has a personal touch, this is the place you are looking for.

We took the train that departs from Peso da Régua towards Covelinhas station, it is a 10 minute ride with a scenic view of the Douro river. You can also take the train from Porto, if you’d like. Reaching there, the Covelinhas station is exactly at Quintas dos Murças. Manoel was expecting us for the tour and tasting. Excellent guided tour, it takes about 1:30 hour and you get to learn all about the grapevines and the cellar. Afterwards, we went to a large room to taste the many different wines they produce at the winery. Great wines, specially the VV47, Margem and both vinhos do Porto (vintage and tawny 10 years). We wanted to book lunch and dinner as well since we were staying the night at the lodge, but it was not available because it was Easter’s eve and many employees were off to spend the holiday with their families. We took the train to Pinhao, had dinner and returned to sleep at the lodge. Amazing 5-room house, with a beautiful balcony, swimming pool, kitchen, living and dinning room. We got to drink many local wines while staying there and had a tasteful breakfast on the next morning. The rooms are comfortable, large beds, and the whole place is very cozy. It was fantastic. We have booked all by email with Manoel and Silvia, who were responsible for the unique experience we had there. Totally recommend it and I’ll definitely come back sometime soon.

Our visit to this Quinta was great! We had an awesome tour of the organic vineyards by Manuel who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the operations (and a good driver). The wines (and ports) are also very good and are separated by region of the vineyard to showcase the different tastes of the conditions which was neat.

Vinhos excelentes e um atendimento ainda melhor. O hotel é espetacular. É preciso mandar um e-mail antes ou ligar. Fica a uma estação de comboio de Régua.

This was an amazing place, I don’t want to tell people about it to try to keep it just to us! The staff were so friendly, the food lovely, the location is great and the philosophy behind their wine is so important.

Pictures hardly do justice to this wonderful place. We stayed 4 nights with 3 kids and the crew is as lovely as the house is beautiful. I highly recommend the picnic in the ruins, they bring you up in the hills with sandwiches and a bottle of wine.

The Douro Region is home to most complex red grapes in Portugal where they grow precariously on the steep hillside vineyards. An hour and a half east of Porto is Quinta dos Murças that was highly recommended by many fellow wine industry friends. As the road narrows alongside the beautiful Douro River, we began to wonder if it was worth the effort, but as we pulled into the Casa and Manuel’s smile greeted us we knew we were in for a treat. He took us on a very informative 2 hour tour of this recently updated facility. Not only was his English very good, but his knowledge of enology even better. They do everything right from foot-treading the grapes to using some of the newly popular clay vessels. This $25 comprehensive tour was followed by a beautiful wine tasting lunch in their dining room overlooking the pool ($30). They have a full range of wines from white to red to port. They also rent out 6 very nice rooms for those who don’t want to drive. All in all, this experience was the most valuable one in the whole country to help us define what the new Portuguese wine scene is all about. Go there before it gets discovered
