I have been coming to Bens since 1980, pretty much 5 times a year. It is fantastic for peace and quiet except for the occasional dog barking and sheep bleating. Some of the houses that are rented out have a swimming pool, but if you rent a house without one don't worry because in nearby Mertola they have a fantastic pool along side the river for about 2 euros per day (with sun loungers). Bens, is handy as you are only 10 mins from Spain (Espanha) going across the bridge at Pomarao (which has two nice restaurants), plus you can sip wine on the Terrace at "Maria's" at night and look across the river. Bens is only 1.30 hours from Lisbon, 30 mins from Monte Gordo, 2 hours from Seville, 45 mins from Beja, 30 mins from Serpa, 10 mins from Mina. Mina is popular with tourists as the lake has a beach (and sun shades) and a restaurant/coffeshop with an outdoor terrace, people swim in the lake and it is great for young children too as no waves. Mertola only 10 mins away has shops, supermarkets and restaurants. My favourite restaurants are Al Andaluz, 5 mins away in Santana da Cambas, Restaurant a Paragem, 10 mins in Corvos, Tamaju in Mertola plus many others all reasonably priced with great food and variety. Bens is in the Guidiana National Park, so you can explore the Natural Beauty which looks different depending on what season you go to Bens. They have recently opened the Socialidade, which is where you can get a light snack or a drink, it like a little café. If you need internet I suggest you buy a portable router and buy a NOS data card, it currently costs 15 Euros and last for unlimited internet for 2 weeks. Unless of course the house your in has internet. As a small tip if your renting a car, do your research as a lot of the hire companies rip you off, take pics of your fuel and whole car on receiving car and taking back car.
