The monument of the discoveries is one of the highlight attractions in Belem, situated directly in front of a most brilliant Wind Rose Square. This square was built in 1960 and is a beautiful sight to see. At centre is a 14 meter wide map of the world during the Golden Age of Portuguese Discovery. The map makes use of black and red lioz limestone and details Portuguese colonial and trading outposts as well as their discovery dates. The map is then surrounded by a 50 meter wide Compass Rose design which is then bordered by traditional calçada portuguesa, beige and black cobblestones that make up a wave pattern. You can see the Wind Rose Square quite well from ground level, taking in close up views of the square. However, for best views, you really need to take the lift up to the top of the Monument of the Discoveries. From here you can view the entire square and capture everything in your camera

An impressive rose stone design with a large world map and famous dates in world exploration. This was apparently donated by South Africa to Portugal. I think there would be a great view from the top of the nearby monument but we didn't go up it.

The Rosa-dos-Ventos is located in front of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Age of Discoveries), next to Tagus riverbank. It consists of a wind rose and the elaborate mosaics-laid map of the Portuguese world discoveries, with their most important overseas possessions marked and bearing the date of the respective discovery. Even though the Rosa-dos-Ventos was not a part of the original monument, and was inaugurated 20 years later following the latter's opening, it looks and feels - thematically and aesthetically - as an inherent component and continuation of the Monument to the Age of Discoveries. Most often than not the attraction gets pretty crowded with visitors of the countries pictured on the map trying to get their pictures taken standing on their native country's spot. Noteworthy is the fact that the wind-rose and the map were donated by the South African government in 1960. At the time, both Portugal and South Africa were considered political pariahs, due to their dictatorship and apartheid governments, which instilled a certain degree of affinity between the countries.

I walk past here on the way the the garden section with many landmarks. It was hard not to notice it given how many tourists was looking at the ground. I also saw a tour guide giving it all in his story telling! My thoughts are that it wasn't particularly interesting as it was just a typically world map. Although it was one drawn as in the 1500 so it was impressive in that regard as they were able to do it's in spite of the technology at the time. Other than that I just quickly walked by after taking some photos. It's not exactly something you come especially to see, but you may as well if you're already passing this area after looking at the monument.

Riesige Windrose, die man am Besten von oben, also vom Denkmal der Entdecker betrachtet. Von dort oben kann man aber die ganzen Jahreszahlen nicht erkennen, die im Pflaster eingelassen sind. Ich nehme an, die zeigen wann bestimmte Weltgegenden von Europäern "entdeckt" würden.

Opera in pietra a livello del pavimento: la bussola ha un diametro di 50 metri e una larghezza di 14 metri. Fu realizzato nel 1960 dal Sudafrica su progetto dell'architetto Cristino da Silva per celebrare le scoperte degli esploratori portoghesi del XV e del XVI secolo. Ci si può camminare sopra, la si può ammirare di lato o dall'alto, salendo sul Monumento alle Scoperte.

É uma obra feita em pedra, ao nível do solo e digna de ser apreciada e observada do topo do padrão dos descobrimentos. É um mapa mundo com indicação das viagens dos descobridores portugueses e antigas colonias.

A tradição portuguesa de calçadas com desenho simbólico dos Descobrimentos

Arte decorativa ao ar livre que compõe o calçamento de acesso ao Padrão do Descobrimento, feito calcário liós, negro e vermelho, possui 50m de diâmetro e 14m de largura. É uma atração que desperta o interesse e atrai os visitantes.
