Clara helped me successfully apply for Portuguese citizenship. This was a long and difficult process that I could not have managed on my own. It was extremely important to me for many reasons - to connect with my family heritage and to secure my right to reside indefinitely in my current home country, which was time-sensitive. My application was submitted in June 2016 and approved in January 2019. The extremely complex bureaucratic process relying on 500 years of family history mostly lost to time was additionally complicated in my circumstances because I am a US national but have resided in the UK for several years. That meant that my background was scrutinised and the process dragged out for a long time. It was very stressful for me, with a ticking clock on the rights of European citizens to reside in the UK and it came down to the wire. Clara did everything she could to keep me up to date and reassured throughout the process and investigated every potential avenue of recourse to escalate the application. Ultimately my application was successful just in time, and Clara made herself available for me to fly to Lisbon immediately to receive an expedited passport and citizen card so I could get back to London as quickly as possible and with minimal disruption to my new job. It was very clear to me in Lisbon that I would also not have been able to navigate the process of acquiring my passport and citizen card without the help of Clara and her team, who acted as handlers and translators as well as tour guides. I would not have wanted to be on my own attending to the final stages of the process, and a Portuguese national friend in London later told me most other Portuguese people he knows avoid the London consulate at all costs and often fly back to Lisbon to do any business because it is notoriously bad, so I have no doubt I made the right choice sticking with Clara to the end.
