We booked a tour of the winery on a Saturday morning. The person who answered the phone was very helpful and efficient. I thought the tour was reasonably priced. Parking was good and the facilities here are excellent. We saw a collection of artefacts collected by the owner and some of the wine storage areas. The person who conducted out tour was helpful and interesting. It might be useful if the guide could have told us more about the soil types and precise methods used in producing the wine. Basically more technical information. The tasting was interesting and wine if obviously subjective. The only thing I would like to have seen more of was the actual factory.

Visitamos eu e minha esposa. As exposições das coleções de arte são interessantes. Os guias são educados e a visita toda é muito agradável. Sentimos apenas falta de uma visita mais a fundo no processo de fabrico dos vinhos. Não é de nada uma experiência ruim, entretanto poderia ir mais a fundo na fabricação em si. Recomendo a visita a todos que estiverem na região.

A fabulous tour through the winery! The staff are incredibly friendly and have an excellent knowledge of the art, the facility and the production of their wines. We had a tasting of 3 wines at the end of the tour and all 3 were outstanding. The facility is adorned with art from France, Belgium, Italy, Africa, Netherlands and Portugal. Definitely worth a visit, we are so glad we stopped here.

Boa tarde. Saimos de Lisboa hoje às 9 hs e só conseguimos chegar às 12 hs na vinícula. Liguei mais cedo e não fui informada que hoje não havia mais vagas para reserva. Chegamos sem reserva, é um fato. Tivemos um atendimento extremamente frio e arrogante na loja de vinhos. Pedi para falar com alguém que pudesse considerar nosso esforço e nossa escolha em visitar a Bacalhoa e recebemos um sonoro Não.
Além disto recebi a informação de que eu teria de ter carro para ir ao palácio e que somente as 16:30 hs haveria visita aberta ao museu e jardins.
Estou irritada, com fome e extremamente frustrada com esta recepção de vocês. Desculpas não são suficientes. Eu perdi meu tempo. Vocês perderam o meu respeito. Não os indico para absolutamente ninguém.

A piece of art in itself. Winery with guide tour through some of the amazing collections of Joe Berardo. From Africa tribes to Art Deco, and all of this within the cellar where the wines are stored and prepared. It finishes off with a wine taste of white, red and Moscatel. Trully an amazing experience. Note that around the place you will be able to see the beauty of olive trees with more than 2000 years old. No mistake there, 650 bc. Totally recommend the experience.

Tour guide was nice. Sorry to tell ... I realized your wine was selling much more expensive than in the airport of Portugal. Another reason was I don’t like the taste of the muscat wine the first one introduced by your shop.
One thing I only like was the cool look inside the wine cellar - those antique and tiles on the wall.

Merece la pena la visita conjunta del palacio de Bacalhoa (con sus jardines y obras de arte) y de las bodegas (con museo art decó y museo africano). Al final, cata de 3 vinos (blanco, tinto y moscatel). También azulejos de todas las épocas. Todo por 10 euros.

Excelente passeio para conhecer a sede de uma das vinícolas mais conhecidas de Portugal. Estrutura muito bonita com exposição de obras de arte nos jardins e na parte interna, inclusive nas caves de amadurecimento dos vinhos. Muito boa a degustação de vinhos harmonizada com queijos do Azeitão. Vale reservar algumas horas para este passeio.

A surreal experience awaits those who go on the tour of bacalhoa winery. The cost of the visit was cheap, but in reality there is no tour of vineyards or any view of the wine making process here. The only wine I saw came out of a bottle at the end of the tour.
The tour consists of mostly walking through an art exhibition of various mid century modern furniture and the like, a selection of painted tiles spanning a millennia, and an “out of Africa” section. The explanation for why this art is on display in this winery is essentially the owner of the company is a rich art collector. That is supposed to be enough to answer any questions. As the tour continued I began to wonder if this benefactor was some kind of classic Bond villain.
The out of Africa section is especially heinous. As I saw in several other reviews here, a very wide variety of African art is on display but curated in an offensive fashion that is very colonial in mindset. “Hakuna matada” from the lion king plays in the background as we look at a collection of masks and are told a box we are looking at is for the bones of a person. This section of the tour ends with an emphasis on what a “dangerous place” Africa is as we view many animal skulls stuck onto the branches of a tree. The guide states their rich benefactor spent a few years in South Africa and this is why he is interested in African art. This was very uncomfortable.
Next there is a poorly lit room with barrels of red wine aging on pallets, we are told the Gregorian monk chants being piped in over speakers serves a function to agitate the wine as it ages. More than a few barrels I brushed up against in the darkness were completely empty. Tiles hanging from the ceiling purported to be from the moorish period are shrouded in darkness.
I could go on. If you are curious about this lair and passing through the area, it is a cheap show. Certainly not worth a trip from Lisbon.

Visita efetuada em Agosto com um grupo demasiado grande para a dimensão das salas a visitar o que tornou a visita incomoda e demorada.

Para nós foi decepcionante a visita a sede da Quinta da Bacalhoa em Azeitão. Primeiro que a guia que nos atendeu estava visivelmente cansada e sem vontade, as explicações foram rápidas e burocráticas. As "exposições", que fazem parte da coleção do dono da empresa, ficam sem sentido algum dentro do contexto da produção de vinhos. Ao final, não foram feitas explicações durante a degustação dos vinhos (as guias não me pareciam estar preparadas para isso) e ainda fomos informados que deveríamos ser rápidos na degustação pois a Quinta iria fechar para almoço. Resumindo, o ingresso é barato mas o atendimento deixa muito a desejar. Sobre a "exposição Out of Africa" senti um grande desconforto, pois nenhuma das peças tinham legendas (nome, ano, autor/etnia) e a guia fez explicações extremamente rasas, genéricas e eurocêtricas diante da diversidade cultural africana ali presente, assunto o qual sabemos que necessita de uma abordagem complexa. Sinceramente, minha sugestão é que a empresa doe a coleção para algum museu dos países de origem das peças ou então coloque legendas e que a visita guiada seja feita por profissional especializado no assunto e que tenha origem africana/angolana (ou que pelo menos treine uma equipe para isso). Sem isso, não faz sentido algum ter aquelas obras e artefatos expostos ao público. Acaba por não informar nada, mas apenas reforçar estereótipos e preconceitos.

Guided tour around this historic place to learn, and see, 2 thousands year old olive trees. Also about wines, grapes and a typical palace structure and Portuguese tiles.
Wine degustation at the end. The wine shop has good prices.
They have a museum attached to the wine factory. Very rich visit!

Espetacular ! O acervo da Quinta, atualmente do proprietário Comendador Berardo, é muito interessante e vale a penar conhecer. A Quinta em si possui uma Arquitetura e história bastante ricas. Oiunda do século XIII, passou pelas mãos de vários proprietários até os atuais, da familia Berardo. Os vinhos são de alta gama, especialmente os Moscatel 10+ anos. Vale o passeio, especialmente se o dia estiver ensolarado na região do Azeitão.

Nunca visite una bodega que incluyera en su interior una exposición de arte, piezas históricas y otras culturas. Una degustación triptica básica de vinos con buen cuerpo y sabor. Una recorrida completa del almacenaje y añejado, en lugares celosamente mantenidos en un ambiente estable, media luz y rodeado de obras de azulejos típicos de Portugal. Se o plano é visitar um vinícola este não é realmente o lugar. Passamos por duas exposições da coleção do proprietária, totalmente fora do contexto sobre vinhos, e em apenas por dois momento vinhos as barricas (o espaço com as barricas de vinhos tranquilos é bem legal, única parte válida do passeio). Nada parreiras, e por fim, uma degustação apressada com a loja de vinhos já por fechar. Não vale a visita.

Lindo prédio, com arte e decoração envolvente, especialmente as estátuas em tom azul cobalto. Os espaços mantidos pela Bacalhoa em Portugal são incríveis! Repare na entrada do saguão uma oliveira de mais de 2000 anos, mais velha que Jesus Cristo (!!!).
A Bacalhoa Vinhos é o ponto de partida (e chegada) para a visita à Quinta da Bacalhoa, localizada a cerca de 1km da sede de vinhos. Pode não parecer, mas é um dado importante, já que fui - em vão - diretamente à Quinta da Bacalhoa, sem conseguir entrar.
Sobre vinhos, eles têm boa variedade a preços excelentes na loja. Os vinhos da região do Azeitão têm o Moscatel como seu carro-chefe.
Por fim, a degustação do passeio (quinta + prova) foi bem interessante, pois nos ofereceram muita coisa e nos deixaram à vontade. Não houve profundidade técnica na explanação, mas a oferta generosa de vinhos cobriu essa pequena falha.

We toured the estate with Iris, she was a wonderful guide, extremely knowledgeable about the wines and wine-making process. Sampled several wonderful bottles at the end of the tour and found room in our bags to buy a few and bring them back. If you're in the area, do not miss this beautiful place.

Recomendable visita para conocer la historia de esta peculiar 'adega' y la colección de art nouveau que atesora en su interior. La degustación de vinos (blanco, tinto y moscatel está incluida) y los precios de venta al público son muy asequibles y para todos los bolsillos.
Especialmente rico es el Moscatel del año, muy fresquito.
La entrada son 10€ e incluye una imperdible visita a la 'Quinta de Bacalhoa' a menos de 2km de aquí.

Beautiful grounds and lots of good wines to try. Claudio helped us with the wine tasting and the museum tour and really made us feel at home by making it a personal experience. If we did it again we would skip the museum and just ask to see the wine barrels and the vineyard itself! The patron’s personal art collection is impressive but a little incongruous for the wine experience we were looking for.

Iris was as knowledgeable and as enthusiastic as any guide I've ever encountered. Bernardo was incredibly helpful with tips for other adventures in our area. Loved the whole experience!

Awesome place!! The best location on the beach in my honest opinion. The staff is incredibly nice and polite; they even asked how we were enjoying the food which rarely happens in Portugal or elsewhere in Europe. Now the food..... The food was amazing!! Very fresh fish cooked absolutely perfect. The massive fish plate came with cooked and very fresh vegetables as well as potatoes. The atmosphere is exactly what you want in the area and this section of the beach... Strong fishing village beach vibe. You can sit inside or outside on the patio and enjoy the gorgeous view from any seat.

Ao Domingo o palácio não é visitável, só a Adega. Na visita guiada a Adega é possível visitar 3 exposições: arte africana, azulejaria e mobiliário e peças de arte de propriedade do Berardo. No final há uma prova de vinhos, branco, tinto de mesa e moscatel. Tempo total cerca de 1 hora, mais o tempo que se gaste na loja.

It was a surprising visit! I really wasn’t expecting a full art exhibit and the way everything was displayed.
Intriguing and beautiful though. Whilst the exhibits had nothing to do with wine it does have to do with the (fairly recent) history of the brand. We wanted to do the full tour but couldn’t wait til 3pm (we should have enquired ahead but we tend not to as it’s the off season) so we just opted for the wine room, art exhibits and tasting. This was only €3 and incredible value! Our tour guide was friendly and answered our questions with ease. The wine/barrel room was very peaceful. We could have stayed in there for hours.
Whilst the place may not be steeped in wine history and feels more like the owner likes to share his art collections and wealth (quite a split focus) we had a fantastic time! Amazing value and great wines. Thank you!

O staff está de parabéns pela simpatia e disponibilidade e o guia foi excelente e muito informado sobre o local vinhos e sobre as próprias exposições. A repetir. Definitely a strange winery. It seems it was bought by a millionaire/billionaire who made his money of african blood diamonds and wanted to show off his wealth somewhere. Nice art exhibit, but not really sure what it has to do with the wine? Cellars were nice, very clean, but no history to be found here. Nice wines, nothing extraordinary. Een rondleiding bij een grote wijnmaker waarbij de wijnmakerij nauwelijks aan bod kwam. Ik was in Bourgondie, Nieuw Zeeland, Australië, Zuid Afrika bij vele wijnmakers, hier doet men het weer anders. Tijdens de wijntour praat je over kunst, kunst en 2 woorden over hoe je Moscatel maakt. Kostbare kunst uit Afrika en Portugal, waaronder vele eeuwen tableaus met tegeltaferelen. En dan een grote verduisterde hal waar rustige klassieke muziek klinkt om de rijping van de Moscatel in de ruim 900 Franse eiken vaten te bevorderen. Een hal volledig gedecoreerd met tegel tableaus. Buiten op afstand grote RVS tanks waar de wijn in wording wordt geproduceerd. Oh ja en Moscatel wordt verrijkt met Brandy waardoor tijdens de jarenlange rijping de vaten niet hoeven te worden bijgevuld. We sloten af met een proeverij met een fruitige witte wijn, een duffe rode wijn en een matige Moscatel.

If you are in Portugal, take the time to tour the winery. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The Moscatel de Setubal Roxo Superior is excellent!

Maracilhoso! Pena que tive que ir no Domingo e a quinta nao estava aberta, visitei so o museu e a loja.

What an amazing experience! Unexpectedly went above our expectations. We went thinking it was just a small tour of the grounds and ending with a wine tasting. We would of been happy with just that. But no, we toured the estates, gardens, art collection, wine cellar and so much more! Learned a lot of the history inside of the vineyards with connections to not only Portugal but England, US, Africa, Jewish refugees and much more. What a rich experience to be able to learn, view, touch and stand in the middle of history. I would highly recommend this experience to everyone. The staff was extremely friendly also! I can’t wait to go back!

Depois de uma tarde bem passada em sesimbra , abrir apetite pró jantar degustando um queijinho azeitão na companhia de um Moscate ROXO 10anos ou uma prova vinho verde .... ui ui! Exprimentem !

Excelente colecção de arte e óptimos vinhos. Atenção à localização: para visitar o palácio e/ou provar/comprar vinhos deve dirigir-se primeiro à loja que fica em Vila Nogueira de Azeitão.

Infelizmente a localização no mapa está erradissima, o Palácio e a quinta da Bacalhôa, a muitos, muitos anos, foram construidos cerca de 3 ou 4 km mais ao lado.
