Not sure if this one is worth the detour. The room with the skulls was small, but tremendously eerie. The church itself was open and was nice to walk around. If you are in the area, it might be worthwhile to take a quick tour (15 minutes or less) then grab some food from the surrounding cafes. Parking is free in the area and the spot is easy to get to. However, the Chapel of Bones is not well marked on the outside. There was some information on site, but nothing in depth.

Natürlich spannend anzusehen, ist aber wirklich nur eine ganz kleine Kapellennische, welche man durch Gitter ansehen kann. Gegenüber der eigentlichen Kirche gibt es ein paar Parkplätze. Der Ort selbst ist hübsch anzusehen. Ich empfehle einen Besuch eher dann, wenn die Kapelle eh auf dem Weg liegt. Alternativ schlage ich die Capela dos Ossos in Faro vor, kostet zwar 2,-€ Eintritt, kann aber eben von innen besucht werden.

Nos hemos acercado a Alcantarilha para entrar en esta capilla y es muy chula. Si nunca has visto una es impactante ver tantos huesos humanos juntos. Aunque hay otras parecidas en ciudades más grandes como Faro, esta es la que tiene los huesos mejor conservados

Schlichte aber schöne Kirche. An der Rückseite der Kirche kommt man zu den der Capela dos Ossos. (Geneinkapelle). Decke, Wände und Altar der Kapelle sind vollkommen mit Schädeln, Knochen und Wirbeln von etwa 1.500 Skeletten des ehemaligen Friedhofes von Alcantarilha ausgekleidet. Als der alte Friedhof zu Baugebiet erklärt wurde, grub man die Skelette aus und schenkte den Gebeinen eine gemeinsame Ruhestätte.

Intrigerend. Zeker eens bezoeken als je in de buurt bent. De kapel is erg klein en wordt afgeschermd door een hek. Het is geen grote omweg waard.

Não vou mentir, a minha primeira visita a este local quando eu era pequena, deixou-me um pouco...inquieta e perturbada, é realmente um ambiente um pouco pesado e se estiver a pensar em levar crianças ao local, tenha atenção, pois elas podem ou gostar muito ou ficar um pouco apanhadas de supresa. Com isto dito é uma visita interessante, mas que demora um bocadinho e costuma ter muitos visitantes.

Pequena capela de ossos . Aberto todos os dias menos domingo e sábado só está aberto até à 1.
Fui com um carrinho de bebé e não tive problemas . Pessoal simpático . Entrada 2 euros por pessoa. Consegue se ver em 20 minutos .
Adorava que houvesse mais explicações sobre o local .

Mega interessant aber es lohnt sich nicht extra deswegen hinzufahren. Es ist wirklich nur das kleine Kämmerchen das man auf dem Foto sieht. Sonst nichts. Wenn man eh in der Nähe ist, dann ist es cool kurz vorbei zufahren. Ansonsten sehr überbewertet.

Lovely little church with an eerie addition of a section filled with bones and skulls. Was great to pass a couple of hours walking through the streets to see this then stop off for a coffee in a nearby cafe.

Sind 40 min hingefahren und es hat sich voll gelohnt. Klar ist es nicht mit der Chapel of Bones im Norden vergleichbar. Es ist halt nur ein Raum. Dennoch ist es sehr beeindruckend und gruselig. Kostet auch kein Eintritt. Lässt sich gut mit anderen Destinations verbinden.

This is a small alcove and it is tucked away. If you come here not knowing this area, you might not find the chapel. Better if you park your car and get your bearings and explore on foot. You will find much to see.

Fascinating and interesting structure. We walked to the back of a beautiful church with walls richly adorned in gold. Walked through a door into a courtyard where the chapel is situated. There were a few skulls missing and assuming they have crumbled away over the years. Certainly hope no one has been damaging the structure on purpose. I didn't know how I would feel walking into a chapel of bones but the apprehensive feeling was overcome by the amazing structure.

Extra 35 Minuten hingefahren und dann ist an der rechten Seite der Kapelle ein kleiner Raum, den man nicht betreten kann, und dort sind dann überall an der Wand Knochen.
Interessant aber auch kein besuch Wert.

Creepy place but worth seeing. Gives You chills. Something different and unusual. Not for everyone's taste. Wouldn't came back for second time but definitely would take first timers there. And this is only one chapel, one room, not that big.

Very small chapel. If you are on the way to Silves and you pass by Alcantarilha it worth the visit... otherwise go to Faro to visit a bigger one. Here the chapel was not well preserved.

Pasamos por Alcantarilha expresamente para ver esta capilla. Es bastante pequeña y se puede visitar de manera gratuita y totalmente libre. Impresiona bastante ver tantas carabelas en una capilla tan pequeña como esta pero definitivamente merece la pena visitarla

Nachdem ich auf der Karte gesehen hab dass es diesen Ort hier gibt, konnten wir nicht um hin uns diese skurrile Wirklichkeit anzuschauen.
Es ist wirklich außer ordentlich verstörend wenn man in die Kapelle hinein schaut und die vielen Totenköpfen um sich herum sieht.
Stellen sich ein sofort jede Menge Fragen.

Habiendo visto la de Évora y la de Campomaior, la de Alcantarilha es la más pequeña de las tres. Aún así, sigue siendo bonita e impresionante de ver. Está abierta y señalizada, no tienes que buscar a nadie nada para abrirla. Merece la pena visitarla y tomar algo en los bares de alrededor tranquilamente.

Small room made of bones and skulls from the old churchyard cemetery, built during the XVI century.
If you're looking for something to eat nearby it's worth a quick visit, otherwise it's probably too much time spent driving and looking for parking for such a tiny area.

Pequena capela anexa à igreja matriz. Passa despercebida pela façta de indicações e não tem nem já algo que sirva de tabela explicativa. É mais uma curiosidade da terra e só se sabe que existe se for por informações da internet.

Capela totalmente revestida de ossadas humanas, provavelmente retiradas de um antigo cemitério que foi deslocalizado (ou quando no séc XIX proibiram os enterramentos dentro das igrejas e levantaram as ossadas que lá se encontravam (a capela fica na lateral da igreja matriz de Alcantarilha).
A capela ainda preserva o ar macabro do seu recheio mas alguns ossos ja estão quebrados ou em falta. Em todo o caso está aberta todos os dias e pode ser visitada, aconselho a visita para apreciar o trabalho meticuloso da deposição dos ossos.

As far as I noticed there is only one small room made of bones on the side of the church (on the right side, if you stand in front of front door). The room does not seem to serve any purpose. It's just made of skulls and bones picked from a nearby cemetery quite a while ago (can't remember the century).
It worth being visited only if you pass nearby. Doesn't worth a detour.

Impresiona, a pesar de ser pequeña da mucho que pensar sobre la naturaleza humana y tiene una disposición muy artística. Abre desde las 9, creo que cierra sobre las 17,30. La señora de la tienda de enfrente (Bandarra) la abre todas las mañanas. La iglesia a la que está unida también merece una visita. Ambas son gratis, pero aceptan y agradecen donativos.

Well, the walls are all over filled with bones and skulls, and it is kind of creepy to think about that everyone of it had a live like myself. However it is a really small room attached to the small church (the church was not accessible when I was there) My pictures show pretty much everything of the chapel If you ever went to the catacombs in Paris your probably will be not impressed to much.
A trip to this place is recommended if you want to see more than just the beach.
Next door your find a great little restaurant which is mainly used by the locals (Casa de Pasto A Cisterna)

Найважливіша церква міста, будівництво якої тривало з 1500-х років. Має унікальний дерев"яний іконостас XVIII ст. Каплиця кісток (фактично, черепів) знаходиться справа, до неї веде окремий вхід. Парковка поруч лише на два-три авто, і стояти можна не довго

Small chapel, fully decorated with human remains.
Bones were collected a couple of hundred years ago when the local cemetery was closed / cleaned out.
Although old and anonymous, I can't see why one would use bones as decorative material..

A Capela dos Ossos de Alcantarilha situa-se anexada no lado sul da Igreja Matriz do século XVI, no centro histórico da bonita freguesia de Alcantarilha, em plena região Algarvia, é imóvel de valor concelhio.
A Capela dos Ossos remonta, também, ao século XVI, inserida na mesma linha estilística de outras capelas do género existentes no país, como em Évora, Faro e Lagos.
O seu interior está praticamente todo revestido e ornamentado por mais de 1500 ossadas humanas (provavelmente oriundas de um antigo cemitério) com excepção do trabalho de escultura da figura de Cristo Crucificado datada do século XVI (provavelmente proveniente de um antigo altar da igreja matriz).
Há também quem diga, embora sem qualquer comprovativo fiável, que estas ossadas seriam de frades Jesuítas que pereceram pela região.
