Análise: As an American (in Portugal for less than a year), I still ask if the people in a shop speak English. At first, I got a "hardly any" response. However, I let them know that I was referred to them by a local painting contractor and they warmed up to me and their English (and my little Português) met in the middle and I was able to get their recommendations on the materials I needed to accomplish a specific project.
