Where do I get started???? This place is amazing.. the owner was so friendly and made us feel at home... The food was the best I've had in all of Portugal.
They custom made a meal to my preference.... The ambiance, the food and the company... I felt at home.

Accueil génial ! Nous a fait attendre dehors (2ème service et nous n'avions pas réservé) mais comme il faisait chaud, a tout de suite ramené une bouteille d'eau et des verres pour les enfants, et des bières pour les hommes . Service super. Saumon, bar au top! La morue baigne un peu dans l'huile, à savoir avant de commander...

Super restaurant si vous souhaitez goûter les plats de la région. Les plats sont simples mais excellents. Le prix est abordable. Nous avons été touchés par l'agreable accueil de la patronne qui a fait patienter notre grand groupe avec une bière fraîche pour les adultes et de l'eau pour les enfants.... Ma petite fille âgée de 20 mois a été gâtée par un plat maison juste pour elle (offert) et des jeux pour s'occuper.... Obrigada!!

Schönes Restaurant mit einem kleinen Außenbereich.Die Portionen sind etwas klein aber sehr schmackhaft.
Was mich persönlich gestört hat, sind die offenen nur mit einer Schwenktür versehenen Toiletten die nur wenige Meter von den Tischen entfernt sind.

I ordered grilled fish with vegetables. While the fish was delicious, the vegetables (potatoes, beans, carrots and broccoli) were all incredibly overcooked. Worst of all, the broccoli was OFF!!! It looked and smelled horrible. I was surprised no one had noticed. The owner was very apologetic, she brought out some salad and freshly cooked broccoli. She even offered us a piece of cake with some shots at the end of the meal. I appreciated all that but really, the chef needs to learn to cook vegetables properly.

We came upon this local gem one sunny afternoon in Lagos’ Portugal. I finally found the traditional bacalhau dish I was looking for. The delicious tapas style ‘entradas’ were a bargain. I finished my meal with a chocolate mouse and a cappuccino. I highly recommend Calhou restaurant.

Sitio de comida típica portuguesa, con servicio muy amable y platos riquísimos. No es barato, pero tampoco caro, y la comida es generosa. Amplia carta de vinos. Ambiente muy agradable.

Really yummy food. It was a Sunday and it was empty and probably the only restaurant open in the area. One of the people came in and told us that this restaurant is usually so full you can't find space to move around. We had the callhou cod fish.. I really enjoyed the fresh chips (crisps). Husband ordered the fried shrimp in garlic butter and i personally enjoyed the sauce of that more than the callhou special. The almond tart was fabulous.. Service, was top notch

If you are in Lagos you MUST eat here.
The food is traditional Portugese - and it's some of the best food I've ever tasted.
We had appies followed by main courses and dessert, and everything was exceptional.
They even gave us complimentary medronito - a homemade native liquor to Portugal.
We spoke to the owner after our meal, and she was one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. She said that they cook everything with "love" - and believe me, they did.
It was such a pleasant experience, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Gemütlich, süße Mutti(vermutlich Chefin), leckerer Wein, faire Preise! Wir haben cataplana für zwei mit prawns gegessen, absoluter Hammer! Als Vorspeise gabs eingelegte Oliven! Die prawns waren eine der besten die ich je gegessen habe.
Hinweis: Für Leute die Gräten oder Fischknochen ekelig finden oder ihnen den essenspaß rauben, ist dieses essen absolut nichts! Für mich einfach nur fabelhaft gewesen, absolut geiler Geschmack!

Petit restaurant très sympa. La serveuse à fait l'effort de parler en français alors que nous parlons anglais.
Le repas était succulent. Du début jusqu'à la fin. Nous nous sommes même essayés à un vin blanc de l'Algrave qui c'est avéré très bon avec nos plats.
Et pour finir le repas sur une bonne note on nous offre le digestif.
Super resto je recommande.

I highly recommend this restaurant! The food is outstanding, prices so reasonable, and the wait staff so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is very small and Intimate which creates a cosy ambiance, but requires pre-booking. Our best meal in Lagos!

Pricy for what you get and tables are very close to each other. We had the chicken breast & the squid. The squid was very tasty,the breast ok. The side dishes (vegetables/fried fries without any spices, salad unmarinated). For the price we would have expected more, e.g., herb spiced side dishes, homemade salad sauce and more details/love on the plates. The waitress was also not nice (no thank you, no good bye...). We didn't feel very welcome.

Good food and great hospitatlity. The waitress who I believe was also the owner was super nice and friendly. My daughter liked her so much she gave her a hug. I had the house cod and the rest of my family had steak and fries. All very good and the atmosphere is very cozy.

Cenamos hoy en este sitio y lo que yo comí no me pareció nada especial..Comimos los chipirones y el bacalao..Los chipirones no estaban limpios por dentro, además venían en un refrito un tanto picante..
El bacalao tenía a mi gusto bastante aceite.. en fin, nada especial.
El precio no me pareció nada económico, pero eso si, los platos eran muy abundantes.
El sitio es muy bonito, y el personal muy muy amable.

Best Neapolitan Pizza ever
The restaurant has newly added pizzas to their menu and it was absolutely the most delicious pizza I have ever had. Good ingredients and made with love. The lady, who was serving us was very kind and paid attention to the details. Nice wine, good athmosphere and all in all a very good experience.

Love this place! Fantastic flavorful food, friendly service & cozy ambience. We ate here 2 days in a row & loved everything we had! If we were there still, we'd have made it 3 days in a row! We both agreed the port-poached pear with lemon gelato was the best dessert we've ever had. Can't say enough about this place - we LOVED it!

We were looking for a typical Portuguese restaurant near the centre of Lagos and were so happy to find this one, that we returned a second time during our holidays!
It's a small restaurant, tastefully decorated and the owner, who also assists in the restaurant, is super thoughtful and speaks well English! The first time we visited we were lucky enough to be there during the Fado evening, with amazing live Fado. The food is fresh and delicious (we had the salmon, golden bream and pork sirloin) and the deserts are all home-made.
Tasteful wines and you may expect some homemade liquor at the end of your meal.
We highly recommend it!

Calhou is a lovely dining experience. The food is excellent and there is no feeling of being rushed to get more customers through the door. The service is really friendly and cost is very reasonable. I would recommend booking as it is very popular.

Gutes Essen, schöne Musik - ein toller Urlaubsausklang

Es war unser letzter Urlaubsabend und wir hatten auf Empfehlung einen Tisch im Calhou reserviert: Abendessen und Fado - beides ein sehr schönes Erlebnis: Das Essen bestand aus einer Vorspeise aus verschiedenen Kleingkeiten und einer Dorade mit Gemüse und Salzkartoffeln. Beides war sehr wohlschmeckend, die Vorspeisen mit viel Knoblauch und die Dorade mit viel Gemüse ... Lecker! Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist super.
Danach gab es Musik: Eine kleine Gruppe bestehend aus einer Sängerin und zwei Gitarristen präsentierten fast zwei Stunden lang ursprünglichen, portugiesischen Fado: Eindrucksvolle Stimme, ausgefeilte Technik und lokales Timbre - wirklich schön. Die Stimmung war familiär, der Service zuvorkommend und warmherzig, und zum Schluss gab es einen lokalen Schnaps (Medronho) auf Kosten des Hauses.
Das Calhou ist absolut empfehlenswert - eine Reservierung ist dringend empfohlen.
It was our last holiday evening and we had reserved a table in Calhou on recommendation: dinner and fado - both a very nice experience: the food consisted of a starter of various small things and a sea beam with vegetables and boiled potatoes. Both were very tasty, the appetizers with lots of garlic and the sea bream with lots of vegetables ... Delicious! The price-performance ratio is great.
Then there was music: a small group consisting of a singer and two guitarists presented almost two hours of original, Portuguese Fado: impressive voice, sophisticated technology and local timbre - really nice. The atmosphere was familiar, the service courteous and warm, and at the end there was a local liquor (medronho) at the expense of the house.
The Calhou is highly recommended - a reservation is absolutely required.

Im sad i found this place on my last night in Lagos. I would eat there every day if i could. I had the fish Cataplana and it was the most delicious dish I've had. The owner is so nice and explained us how the dish is prepared from the fishermen catching the fish to how they cook it.

Loved this traditional Portuguese restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and very reasonable prices for what you get. Tried the ray salad and the fish cataplana - both were amazing. Note, even though it says it's for two people, the cataplana is enough to feed 3, especially if you have appetizers.

"It has happened": maybe the translation of the restaurant's name? I know calhou to an italian sounds like calore (warmth). And that's what we felt.
The waiter is friendly, professional and funny.
But the main course is the owner, the most awesome lady you'll ever meet.
While the prices are ok, in line with rest of town, the food is way above: local, tipical, delicious. The best squidlets i have ever tasted in my life (quite the statement for an italian), no competition. The codfish was soft, flavourful and with a ton of complementary tasty veggies.
It's obvious that the owner loves having a restaurant, feeding and meeting guests. She loves what she does and she loves people.
It might look like a small hike to get here from the center but lagos is minuscule, you can't miss this place

Tres bon restaurant de spécialités portugaise. Le restaurant est petit donc des fois vous pouvez patienter mais sachez que c'est pour la bonne cause. Les prix sont tout à fait accessibles. Nous avons mangé une cataplane de morue (2 personnes) pour 30€. Les plats sont généreux et la patronne fait l'effort de parler dans votre langue et tout faire pour que vous soyez à l'aise. Mon premier restaurant à Lagos mais je ne regrette vraiment pas.

We stayed for 5 days in Lagos. This is the best restaurant we vote for our trip. It was so good that we ate there twice!!
We ordered (as the photos). All were really good but I add recommendations on the one I super like!!

Starter
- Sardines with tomato sauce
- Fish mixed in mayo sauce (my favorite)
- Clams with garlic (recommended)
- Octopus salad
Main
- Grilled sardines
- Fillet steak with green pepper sauce (Recommended)
- Fillet steak cooked in Portuguese style (cooked with egg on top and potato, im so so with this because you could find it in Lisbon and porto as well)
- Baccala fish cooked in their style (recommended)
- Grilled squids (super recommended!! I know its grilled squids that has everywhere but i dont know what they putted inside that make this dish different)
Drink
- we tried all red, white and rose sangria. Our favorite is white one!!!
We also have their sweet which was good too but maybe this is enough to show that how much we like the place. Make sure to book before just because the place is quite small. (we were 2 and we are quite early at 7 so we could get the seat)
In the end the waiters (maybe owner as well) also had a shot with us!! (As photos). Guys I love the place ❤️❤️❤️

What an amazing dining experience! The wine was great and it was only 15 euros for a bottle. We ordered a special local dish for two and it was just unbelievable. The prawns, the potatoes, the peppers, the different kinds of fish... I had to order some bread for the leftover fish sauce.
I can’t say enough good things about the place. Cristina is a great host and she even had a dessert, which she made herself, for my boyfriend who is celiac. If you are in Lagos, you MUST go there but make sure to book or get there early or else you might end up in the queue!

Nous avons tous (6) passé un très bonne expérience portugaise dans ce restaurant. Vous êtes les biens venus avec un service très agréable dans une ambiance chaleureuse.
Les plats locaux sont tres bons et goûteux.

Amazing traditional Portuguese food!! Away from average tourists in Lagos. Make sure you have a reservation. Good value for your meal. We would come back here many times. Have not had anything like it so far in Lagos!

Experiência maravilhosa. Comida excecional mas o que é mesmo de realçar é o atendimento sem dúvida muito acolhedor, a dona Cristina muito simpática. Adorei! A repetir sem dúvida e aconselho vivamente todos a passearem neste restaurante vão adorar de certeza.

Nous n’avons pas pris le temps de féliciter et remercier le patron qui nous a accueilli avec écoute particulière car nous voulions déguster une cataplana avec des coquillages

Schönes, traditionelles Lokal etwas abseits des Trubels. Nette Bedienung, leckeres Essen und absolut faire Preise. Eine hervorragend gegrillte Dorade nebst Beilagen bekommt man für ca. EUR 13,00. Empfehlenswert.

Space in the restaurant was very tight.. and we're not big people. We had the Tuna with sweet potato tapas, the mackerel and carrots tapas and the pork bites tapas (each around 5 euros) along with a basket of bread for 1 euro. It was enough for the two of us, but the pork was a bit dry. It was a bit pricey for what we had but was an interesting meal and they provided free samples of their 3 homemade liquors as an aperitif.

Very good restaurant serving traditional food. As well as being tasty, the portion sizes are reasonable too. Small on the inside with a nice interior. The staff are friendly and efficient. We ordered one starter, two mains, two desserts and a couple of drinks and it came to around 50 euros.

Hervorragendes traditionelles Restaurant. Wir hatten eine Fischplatte zu zwei und waren mega begeistert. Für mich der beste Fisch den ich je hatte. Personal äußerst freundlich! Ist absolut weiter zu empfehlen!

Staff was attentive, but the food was mediocre at best. The vegetables were undercooked and the baby squids were not cleaned properly, also the clams were full of sand. I am giving it three stars only because the shots at the end of the meal were a nice touch.

This was our favourite restaurant in Lagos during our vacation to the Algarve early Feb. It was so good, we came 3 times and made a special order for their octopus rice and their razor clam rice for our last meal. The staff was very friendly, the food was fresh, and delicious and it was something we all looked forward after a day of surfing or a day visiting the towns along the coast. The grilled salmon was expertly done with a delicious garlic butter sauce. The cataplana was worth the 20 minute wait as the broth and the sauce was just exquisite with all the fresh seafood and veg flavours blending together beautifully. Save room for the dessert, which is all home made.

Bestes Restaurant in Lagos. Traditionelle, gemütliche Atmosphäre. Bedienung zuvorkommend und sehr freundlich, mit toller Weinempfehlung. Fischplatte (eine Art Eintopf) mit Garnelen für zwei Personen - eine riesige Portion und besonders gut. Ebenso der Oktopussalat. Preisleistung spitze, wenn auch sicherlich nicht das günstigste in Lagos. Jederzeit wieder.

Wine has been served extremely warm and there was no ice to chill it.
Fries have been served cold....
But even worse...
Meat has been served super well done..when it has been requested medium...

Pedimos para cenar salada de polvo (pulpo con garbanzos aliñados), almêijoas (almejas grandes) y camarões (langostinos guisados). Delicioso todo. Íbamos con niños así que dejamos la cataplana para mejor ocasion (tardan muchiiiisimo en cocinarla). Los postres muy ricos. Ambiente muy agradable y dueña muy simpática. Reservar o ir temprano porque no son muchas mesas. Solo admiten american expres.

A great surprise! We came without reservation, and the staff tried so hard to get us a table. They did the same for everyone coming. Food was great and the price really low. Place is really cozy, you'll feel almost home in the heart of Algarve.

We had a very good fish and prawns cataplana, a bottle of white wine and a dessert, spending 29€ per person. The waitress was very nice to us. Strongly recommended to book in advance since the place is small (more or less 10 tables).

Incredible Portuguese meals in a quaint and comfortable setting. It seems family run, and the owner (I think) who served us was so very sweet that she made our vacation, I had to hug her on the way out! The food quality and service is significantly higher than other restaurants in the same price (13-20 Euros) per plate.

We were 4. The place was crowded despite it was just couple minutes past opening time. We took Clams with garlic and herbs, olives and bread for starters, it was a good choice. For the main course fish and shrimps cataplana - marvelous. The house wine is cheap, tasty and served in 0.5l-1l jugs. Service was ok. After the bill we got some local homemade drinks free to try.

A nice change from the usual touristy restaurant in Lagos. Nice service, very good food, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, fair prices. We had a great evening and enjoyed ourselves. It's worth the little walk from "downtown" (barely 10 minutes).

I eat here pretty regularly and it is consistently fantastic. The food is delicious and authentic, the atmosphere is warm, and the owners make everyone feel like family. It's a little bit outside of the downtown area, but still within walking distance. Be sure to book a spot for dinner in advance during the summer months.

We have had a really nice dinner.Restaurant is cozy and the family owner of this place is really friendly.We have had fish, and it was really good, perfectly cooked.The house wine is also a must, as it has a really nice bouquet.If you travel in Lagos and you want to try a good family restaurant don't hesitate to eat at Calhou.
