Went to O Tonel a couple of evenings whilst we were on holiday in Tavira. Beyond a doubt one of the best restaurants in the town. You will need to book as the restaurant is extremely popular and is very fairly priced considering the high quality of the food.

The duck is to die for, wish I had the chance to try all the other delicious dishes, but couldn't resist for the second time the duck with Port sauce and mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts! And they have some evenings life music!

In you are in Tavira and want to have a very nice dinner, come to this place.
Make reservations, in case you don’t want to wait for an hour.
House wine is 11euros, and is very good!
Chorizo tapas is very good but sardines... out of this world.
Cod is the the dish to have here.
Polvo (octopus) OMG
Food is just amazing, very good and cooked close to perfection but the service is even better.
2 tapas and main courses were enough for 2 good eaters to be full, not even room for dessert.
This people did something very clever, a menu with the local wines they serve, with a brief description of each one and its PRICE!! Amazing

Delicious food, and great gluten free options! I have celiac disease and the staff was understanding and helpful. The woman in charge of desserts said she also has a gluten issue and makes sure that all of their dessert menu is gluten free.
I had the lamb shank and it was incredible. Favorite meal I had during my week in Portugal.
You'll need to make reservations to make sure you get a table.

An outstanding restaurant in Tavira. My wife and I had respectively the octopus and duck in port sauce. Absolutely delicious. Ask for recommandations for wine pairing and they'll be quite helpful. Prices are also very decent.

Good tuna for starter, very good apetizers. However cataplana was a disaster. Rubber-like octopus, bad (closed) clams.

Abbiamo mangiato zuppa del giorno, formaggio di capra ricoperto di pasta sfoglia con marmellata di ciliegie e due orate alla griglia. Tutto veramente buono ad un prezzo onestissimo,,il lato negativo è stata l accoglienza pessima riservataci , non tanto dal personale ma dalla titolare.

Vraiment excellent! Rapport qualité/prix imbattable! Un délice... Ne changez rien, une vraie bonne adresse ! (ok, les tables sont un poil serrées pour ceux qui aiment l'intimité)

Excellent restaurant! Les tapas sont incroyables : coquillages et crevettes! Le saumon est juste sublime avec sa puree faite maison! Et le dessert , une tuerie...mousse de fruits et tiramisu!, que de superlatif pour ce restaurant ou il faut toutefois reserver.. allez y les yeux fermes !,,,

Les entrees sont magnifiques ! Les anchois delicieux pas sales avec leurs petits pain grilles . La tomate mozza ( ebouillantee ! ) est sublime avec une huile d olives incroyable ! Les clams ; un delice , le chorizo aussi ( une ointe de vinaigre balsamique dans la sauce ; quelle bonne idee!!) et les crevettes a lord ces crevettes dans cette reduction de sauce !!! Le chef Guillerme est un genie !!! Mille merci !
Et le service tres pro et tres agreable ; pour moi , la meilleurs adresse de Tavira ! Herve

Excellent restaurant. Satisfait aussi bien les amateurs de poissons que ceux de viande ou les végétariens. C'est très bien cuisiné et copieux. Il est d'ailleurs très demandé et il vaut mieux réserver ou y aller tôt.

Realmente tenemos poco que valorar. No nos atendieron, alegando que la cocina estaba cerrada, una hora antes del cierre del restaurante, y que la cocina sólo estaba disponible para las reservas que aún no habían llegado (tenían tres mesas con el cartelito "reservado" aún sin ocupar). En fin, todo un despropósito en un lugar dónde la principal fuente de ingresos es el turismo. No volveremos a intentarlo en ese restaurante nunca más, pero igual otras personas tienen la "suerte" de ser recibidos por la dueña.

Excelente localização, mesmo no centro histórico de Tavira. A comida é excelente, desde a apresentação ao sabor. Os preços podem não ser os mais baixos, mas são perfeitamente aceitáveis para a qualidade apresentada - jantar com couvert, vinho, água, peixe grelhado e sobremesa por pouco mais de 15€. Pena só servir jantares.

One of the most amazing meals thus far in Portugal. A great atmosphere, fabulous food & wine, and the cheapest dinner to top it off! The brother & sister who own & run the place are a delight...incredibly friendly & always open to make recommendations on the best food. The fish & shrimp were simply stunning, and the chorizo was a fabulous touch to the evening meal. Definitely go here if in Tavira - you won’t regret it. If wanting to eat outside (which I’d recommend), be sure to call in advance and reserve a table.

Pedimos una cerveza y un refresco mientras mirábamos la carta y si quedaba una mesa libre y después de solicitarlas las consumiciones en tres ocasiones, optamos por levantarnos e irnos por falta de atención. Ellos se lo pierden pues terminamos en otro restaurante donde nos pusieron una cataplana de marisco y pescado buenísima y lo recomendaremos a todos los amigos de España. El Restaurante se llama Filomena. Trato cordial, comida buenísima. Sin esperas exageradas. Una espera normal. En una plaza más amplia y no tan agobiada y extrecha como O Tonel y donde su trato es de indiferencia con los Españoles. Doy una estrella por respeto aunque no se la merecen.

Ristorante in pieno centro di Tavira con tavolini sulla via tipica ( meglio prenotare perché non dispone di molti coperti ) offre ottimi piatti tipici sia di carne che di pesce con un prezzo veramente economico in rapporto alla qualità. Personale giovane e gentile capisce poco l'italiano ma parla tedesco, inglese, portoghese e spagnolo.

There was a very uncomfortable situation while we were having dinner. As in all little and narrow streets in Algarve there are beggars walking around and going to people's tables asking for money. Well there was one beggar who was standing there for quite a long time and out of nowhere he got in the restaurant when just after 5 min he got out. 2 minutes after the cook comes out of the restaurant, goes straight to the beggar and pushes him to the point where he almost fell down if it wasnt for a client standing up and screaming: "Do not touch him!" he would have hurt the beggar more. All this while we were eating is not alright. The staff should take other measures and do not hurt or start a fight in front of their own clients.
Not okay.
Nonetheless the food was good.

Somos un pareja española que viajamos en furgoneta, encontramos el restaurante dando un paseo y nos sorprendió la amabilidad y la deliciosa cocina portuguesa, os recomiendo el pulpo con boniato espectacular...!!!

Reservamos mesa para 2 antes de cenar ya que el sitio tiene bastante afluencia. Los camareros son muy atentos y hablan bastante bien el español. La comida está buenísima, no tenían el bacalao en papillote pero el pulpo estaba exquisito con esa salsa con toque fresco de cilantro, acompañado de boniato. También muy Rico el hojaldre con queso de cabra. De entrante pedimos tomate con queso, el tomate está escaldado, y también estaba muy bueno. De precio unos 25 euros por persona con botella de vino incluido. Repetiría sin duda.

Overrated restaurant, starters were good, Tuna steak (16Euro)was very salty; the waiter tried to justify instead of finding a solution for this complaint, the other dish we had was standard quality.

La comida espectacular. Nos recomendaron el bacalao envuelto en papel vegetal y todo un acierto.
Como punto negativo tardan mucho en atender, y son muy lentos en tomar nota, cómo recomendación, parece que es mejor reservar con tiempo.

Il ristorante è molto carino e invoglia a entrare (meglio prenotare), ci sono anche dei tavoli all'aperto in una bella stradina in zona pedonale ma non super affollata. Altri ristorantini poco più in là rendono il luogo molto piacevole. Detto questo non è che il cibo faccia impazzire, ben presentato e ben curato ma non sempre è disponibile quello che è riportato nella carta del menú, e quello che c'è ha i suoi limiti: ogni vongola cucinata nel vino bianco aveva la sua piccola dose di sabbia un bel pò fastidiosa. La seconda bistecca di filetto di manzo alla griglia (la prima era stata cotta troppo e il cuoco non ce l'ha portata, gesto molto pregevole da parte sua che nel frattempo ci ha portato un tris di salmone con Philadelphia e fragole, un signore), era senza lode né infamia, alla fine era anche troppo asciutta e dura. Buoni i vini. La troppa fretta della proprietaria nel prendere le consegne e scomparire correndo agli altri tavoli, non fa una bella impressione, un pò più di tranquillità e meno tensione farebbe la differenza. Da riprovare.

I use to go here when it was another restaurant.. but it turned out to be an amazing place.
I love the food... it was made with passion and you could taste that in the dish I had. Octopus with sweet potatoes.
And I heard the duck is amazing so I will be back for sure.
Oh and the house White wine is delicious.

Had a great meal here, and they were nice enough to sneak us in early without a reservation, so I recommend calling ahead of time. They have great simple tapas, and the Cataplana for 2 was amazing.

This cosy restaurant has a good terrace in a lively cobblestone street. Service is friendly. Dishes are to die for. The cod and octopus cataplana is a seafood extravaganza. It came with prawns and clams and keeps you busy for 30 minutes. It's an absolute must have. Just ask for a couple of extra napkins, because shellfish... you know.

My parents and I had dinner in this restaurant after the barkeeper in another place recommended it. We were very happy with the food and the service at this place and will definitely return if we go back to Tavira
