Lisbon is an amazing city full of surprises and Union Empanadas is one of them. The real taste of Argentinians empanadas with a Portuguese touch close to Castelo de São Jorge. The staff is very friendly and the cocktails are great. Thank you Elysia and João also for the nice tips from Lisbon!

Excellent empanadas and dessert. I tried three different flavors of empanadas and felt the beef one was the tastiest, followed by the vegetarian option. The chicken was also good but not as good as the beef. They were quite nice to share their dessert recipe with me. The restaurant itself is stylish and quirky, like out of a Wes Anderson movie. Indeed it was supposedly painted by the same person who painted the sets in The Grand Budapest Hotel. The fresh ginger drink was also delicious.

What a great place to have a snack! I had the chicken empanada, the spinach and cheese empanada and the pineapple smoothie. All were delicious!

O sumo de gengibre é excelente. As empanadas são pequenas e caras, a de vitela estava melhor que a de queijo com cebola (o recheio era todo tão misturado que demorou para perceber que era de queijo e cebola) mas estavam saborosas. O ambiente e o atendimento são muito bons.

Stunning place in Alfama. I came here for the decoration of the place, I admit it. But I have to say that the empanadas are as surprising as the interior design of the place. Try the spicy and hot sauce with the cheese and onions empadas, it’s delicious! Good selection of cocktails: the best place for a happy hour or a quick lunch.

We are very lucky to be staying near this place! We tried every empanada on the menu and they were all excellent. Great spice, very tasty.

Another step in the gentrification of this beautiful neighbourhood. Don't get me wrong, the place is very beautiful and the service is very warm and friendly but this place could be in Madrid, Paris or New York. Expensive.

I found it by accident. And what a great accident it was! Asked for a borboleta craft beer and ended up having 2 more. This while i was enjoying the space with a Wes Anderson touch mixed with a traditional lisbon bakery. But the best of all its the people owners and staff are very friendly and available. All this combined makes this place unique and a must visit in lisbon. Dont waste the opportunity to go there and if u can go more than once! Thanks guys for everything and keep going! =)

Stumbled here accidentally while waiting for a restaurant reservation. Should have just stayed here. Some of the best food we had in all of Lisbon. All the empanadas were super flavorful and delicious. Service and drinks were great too!

One of my favourite stop downtown! I discovered Union with a very good friend and became a fan of the place! Love the place, decoration, atmosphere, design, I love as well the empanadas (would love to have some at home just in case). My favourite is the onion one, you definitely need to try one! and I'm a huge fan of cocktails so this place is heaven for me! after work, or after after work I always enjoy stopping by! Gorgeous interiors, from Oscar winning Portuguese painter Goncalo Jordao, delicious and well balanced ( i hate when they are too dry or too greasy) homemade empanadas by a local Argentinian, and fantastic wines and cocktails on a street that still has a great local vibe.

Absolutely love this place! The coolest cocktail bar set in one of the most atmospheric and vibrant streets in Lisbon. Hand painted walls, great margaritas and handcrafted empanadas. My go to whenever I have friends visiting or want to meet fun locals.

I like an empanada. Having lived in Barcelona for several years with a good circle of Argentinian friends I definitely have empanada history so it was with high hopes that I ventured to Union Empanadas. First impression was, "ouch" as the turquoise paint job, more suited to a beach front and the bright lighting assaulted my eyes upon first sighting. Give me a subdued but stylish British racing green and a classic but low key, neighbourhood complimentary, look anytime. I have to admit though the inside paint job on the walls to compliment the classic ceiling demands a begrudging thumbs up even if it is still rather garish. Although obviously well done the decor cries out look at me and Lisbon gentrification as most certainly did the offer of a cocktail as we walked in the door! A cocktail in an empanada joint!?!? Now I'm no expert on food pairing but what cocktail compliments an empanada? I would genuinely like to know. It also begs the question what sort of cocktail bar person works in an empanada joint? Not the best I would guess. It seemed rather like an effort to dramatically increase the income from wet sales rather than to offer a genuinely complimentary gastronomic offering. I can't wait to hear what my Argentinian friends say when I tell them. So onto the empanadas. There were about five different types when we arrived one Saturday night so I thought I'd dip my toe in the water with a chicken empanada and a beer. Behind the glass case the empanadas didn't actually look cooked with the pastry showing no signs of browning. I just assumed they would pop them in the oven before serving but no it was popped straight into a napkin and handed to me. Naturally the pastry was undercooked with no bite or crunch and let down the moist, tasty chicken filling. I also have to gripe about the size of the empanada, for €3 they should definitely be bigger. If you had a hunger you would probably need 4 empanadas to fill you up which would set you back almost €15 with a beer. Throw in a cocktail and you would be spending €20+. Just imagine what you could eat for that in Lisbon? The other gripe was the beer. I was offered the choice between the fire and the frying pan with either Sagres or Super Boc, both possible contenders for the worse lager in Europe. In her defence the American (I think) girl did offer to run somewhere and get me a craft beer but I was thirsty, on a budget and needed to wash down some under cooked pastry in a hurry. There was also a last ditch attempt to up-sell us with some sort of sweet dessert, it was a good try but, rather like the offer of a cocktail, came across as a little desperate - no thanks. So there we have it. Friendly (sales!) staff but €5 for a small empanada and a 25cl bottle of not properly chilled, horrible tasting beer. You pay your money and you take your choice and I won't be back. If I need a late night bite I'll go to my favourite local bar and get a melt in your mouth bifana and a beer for €3.50 and walk away with a ful belly and change from a fiver. The search for my Lisbon empanada home continues....

Shop is nice, staff friendly and empanadas delicious (tasted 4 out of 5 fillings available at the time of my visit), however I think 3 € per empanada is way too much, even if it's handmade. Hopefully the owner will rethink the pricing in the future.

Un lieu très étonnant ! Petit magasin, faibles lumières à la bougie, ambiance très bleutée, murs avec des plaques de métal à effet déformant...une ambiance très détendue. Les empanadas sont vraiment bons, vous avez environ 6 choix si je ne me trompe pas. Ils sont un peu chers (3 euros chacun) mais l'expérience en vaut le coup. Le gérant est également vraiment super sympa et n'hésitera pas à discuter avec vous.

Start your morning, or anytime for a quick bite at this incredible adorable pastry shop featuring among other things — you guessed it — empanadas. They have several different kinds, spinach, cheese, beef, along with other delectable cookies and bites. And she makes a killer cappuccino. This is one of the shops in this small neighborhood that make the area a joy to hang out, talk to new friends, and just soak up the zeitgeist of Lisbon. Definitely worth your stop. I highly recommend this two block neighborhood. I started my morning coffee here, explored Lisbon, had lunch somewhere else, but returned here every night for drinks, dinner, and fado. This was the sweetest place to land in Lisbon. Check out my Google reviews of these neighborhood joints: Cantinho do Aziz, O Trigueirinho, Union Empanadas, Tasqinha Canto do Fado, O Velho Eurico, and Leitaria Moderna. There are other places including an Italian restaurant and a gelato shop. You cannot go wrong staying in this area. The people were friendly, inviting, with big smiles and bigger laughs. I will come back.

Erano giorni che passavamo davanti questo piccolo locale dai colori del "Gran Budapest Hotel" e, nonostante lo trovassimo sempre inspiegabilmente vuoto, a qualsiasi ora, spinti dalle recensioni positive sabato sera ci siamo decisi ad andare. Di nuovo vuoto, con una ragazza ad accoglierci dietro il bancone. Abbiamo ordinato 2 mojitos, un'empanada onion&cheese e una con chicken. Soli nel locale, abbiamo potuto osservare la ragazza che preparava i nostri cocktail e siamo rimasti un po' male: la preparazione, lunga e laboriosa, è iniziata ripassando gli ingredienti e il procedimento su un apposito quadernino, eppure il mojito non era proprio un mojito ma più una limonata alcolica con un grosso mazzo di menta dentro al bicchiere. Le empanadas, piccolissime, sono arrivate a rilento, erano veramente minuscole, ma con un ripieno buono e una buonissima salsa da accompagnamento. Alle pareti, dove era scritto il menu, nemmeno un prezzo era indicato: siamo rimasti veramente sorpresi quando abbiamo chiesto il conto: 20€. Nel complesso, un'esperienza che non rifarei.

A wonderful spot in a great neighborhood! The empanadas were fresh and delicious. They were all great, but the corn and the cheese and onion were my favorite. The cocktails are also delicious and freshly made with high quality ingredients. The mojito was excellent! The shop itself is also super cute. Apparently the signs and interior of the shop were painted by an artist who worked on The Grand Budapest Hotel — so cool! This is a great spot to stop in for a quick bite, or linger for a while over drinks. Highly recommend!

Até que nao é o pior sitio. Mas.....2 euros por um café de maquina nespresso?.....acho um absurdo. A localização nem é nada por ai além. Nao comi lá por isso nao comento a qualidade. O staff pareceume pouco apelativo. Eu, nao recomendo nem volto lá.

Es ist winzig von außen und großartig, was den Geschmack der Empanadas und der Cocktails angeht!!! Die Inhaber sind super freundlich und sehr bemüht, insgesamt merkt man, dass dort alles liebevoll hergestellt wird. Hätte auch noch einen sechsten Stern gegeben. Also aufpassen, dass man nicht dran vorbeiläuft! Wir haben uns zu zweit einmal durch die angebotenen Empanadas probiert - Angebot ist überschaubar - aber dass macht gar nix, weil wir danach tatsächlich satt waren.

Wir sind durch Zufall auf diese authentische Oase gestoßen! Eine richtig angenehme Location in der sonst so touristischen Gastronomie. Das Personal war super bemüht und freundlich und die Stimmung in dem hof einfach unbeschreiblich schön. Super leckeres Essen - ich habe das pulled Pork gleich 3 mal gegessen weil ich so begeistert war ! Absolut zu empfehlen!!!! Sehr sehr nice !

Definitely tasty, the veal, but for 3 euro per tiny empanadas, it'll put you back... It had nothing to do with the $ but to sit on a stool for fast food while paying 20 euro to feel full, I'd find better value in a nice restaurant :) oh and another thing, they don't list their prices anywhere...

First i bought 2,one with beef, one with tuna and left.. After the last bite i came back and bought 3 more.. Yes they are a bit pricy but it was WORTH it!

We stopped here and tried a variety of their empanadas. All were delicious but Chicken, Tuna and Spinach + Cheese stood out the most. We ended up going back again for more.

A very warm and cozy place with great staff. There empanadas are all hand made and with generous amount of filling. The shop is like a hidden gem in the lisbon city. They also serve wines, cocktails, Ginja, sangria and their taste are all unique to this shop. Overall it's an experience not to be missed.

Excellent and tasty empanadas. We were staying up the road and grab these a few evenings as an afternoon snack after a long day walking up and down hills.

The empanadas were very good. The finely coiffed owner helped us with some local restaurant selections in the neighborhood where we could get a good lunch and he went out of his way to help us with some dinner ideas as well. Midway through our conversation he helped the extremely elderly lady who had been sitting at the counter get a taxi and he walked her carefully to it. When I asked him if she was his grandma he said no, she’s just an old lady from the neighborhood who doesn’t really have a lot of help. Ausgezeichnet als Snack für zwischendurch, sollte man auf jeden Fall probiert haben. Wir waren zwei mal da und haben Käse/Zwiebel, Spinat/Zwiebel, Rind und Thunfisch probiert und sie waren alle köstlich. Leider läuft man schnell dran vorbei, selbst wenn man danach sucht. Ein Schild auf dem Gehweg gegenüber oder an der Hauswand wäre sicher eine gute Idee. Vielen Dank für diese kleine Delikatesse :)

Wir hatten die Spinat/Käse und Zwiebel/Käse Empanadas. Die waren sehr lecker. Man geht leider sehr schnell vorbei, da es ein klitzekleiner Laden in der Wand ist. Aber sehr süß bemalt. Wir sind zum Glück nochmal zurückgegangen und haben die Empanadas probiert. Ich kann sie sehr empfehlen. Besonders gut für den kleinen Hunger für zwischendurch.

A little place, hole-in-a-wall kind, located in the heart of Alfama, serves the best empanadas I've ever tried. Veal and onion-cheese are to die for. The owner is a very nice gentleman who speaks perfect English. When you are in Lisbon, this place is a must.

Delicious empanadas and even better service! Joao, one of the owners, is very friendly and a great conversationalist. I recommend stopping for a snack and drink and seeing Lisboa through the eyes of a local. We returned several times! A highlight of our trip.
