Let me start by saying I really, really wanted to be able to leave a blazing review for this place. But I really can't, as it has been disappointing, despite having been recommended to us by a lisbonite.
Although the restaurant sells itself on the fado, this was not at all a highlight of our dinner. The instrumentalists were quite good, however the 'guest' singers were dubious. It seemed at first they just brought a few of the grandmas/-pas of the family to also sing a song or two, but when these rather amusing characters proved to be not a touching curiosity, but rather the musical head acts, it all become questionable. It's as if they just wanted to play it all for laughs, even though most people think they're coming to listen to fado played profesionally - or at least taken seriously!
Despite the low quality of the musical act, the players were surprisingly quick to shush people between every two songs, and took themselves (though not their playing) much more seriously than anything I've seen before. They might have wanted to keep the door shut if this was important to them, yet they kept it open presumably to entice more customers in - and thus it was quite noisy from the street. Still, no excuse to keep reminding guests to shut up, and most people around us were visibly bemused by these requests.
The food was no more impressive: cold starters were served by default despite NOT being on the house but obligatorily counting towards the minimum 25 EUR consumption; and there very few items to choose from. What we chose (bacchalhau fish) was acceptable but a bit burnt.
Finally, despite it being a very hot day, we had to ask the waitress for water maybe around 10-15 times; every time she brought a tiny glass just for one of us, and so we had to ask again and again. Might have been more efficient and polite to just put a jug of ice-water on the table, madame, instead of obliging us to keep signing at you even though it was obvious we were still thirsty?
Again, too bad I cannot recommend this place as the decor is nice. But just that is not enough!

we had real fun here in 2017. Good food at reasonable price, good wines, great experience and lovely performers of Fado. When back in Lisbon, we will return to this restaurant. Book in advance and show up.

Originelles, kleines Fado-Lokal in einer Altstadt-Gasse, nicht leicht zu finden. Maximal 30 Plätze, also unbedingt reservieren! Originelle Fado-Darbietungen von einer 3-Mann-Kapelle plus voluminösem Sänger (der Chef?). Dauer bei uns (mit Pausen) von 20:00 h bis 23:15 h. Einmalig, originell, authentisch.

Restaurant pour lequel on y va pour principalement écouter du Fado. Cest une petite salle d environ 30 couverts qui par sa disposition fait penser à un mini cantine. Vous mangez a coté d'autres clients ce qui rend le moment très convivial. C'est sans chichi et sans prétention. Niveau repas c'est bof mais le spectacle est génialissime ! Le temps s arrête. Du fado de très bon niveau et dans un contexte typique. Qui veut chanter du Fado peut chanter. Toute la soirée il y a un défilé de chanteur. Des habitués qui passent par la et s arrêtent chanter. En passant par La cuisinière entre deux cuissons. Le portier, la voisine. Cela rend la soirée authentique et vos oreilles vous remercirons. Une très belle soirée passée la bas. Au niveau prix compter 30eur entrée plat et bouteille de vin par pers ( il y a un minimum de commande de 25eur par pers). Vous payez surtout pour le spectacle qui vous transportera contrairement au repas. Mais je recommande car la musique proposée vaut largement se prix là !

I don't know If I will recommend this place. The Fado was really good (high performance)...but the food was poor! The price was a bit expensive but acceptable because there was the fado performance included. We didn't like too much the fact that an absolute silence was required during all the time of the fado (= All the time of the dinner)..but that was just a personal though.

Es una taberna pequeña, de barrio, con mucho encanto. Se respira el auténtico ambiente de Alfama y del fado. Además de los artistas contratados el dueño sale a cantar y de vez cuando hasta la cocinera se unía.
Las mesas son grandes y se comparten con más gente, el ambiente es increíble y al final lo de menos es la comida que también estaba muy buena. Acabamos cantando todos.

Excellent fado, the best amateur fado I have come across in Lisboa. The place is very intimate and cosy with excellent musicians and singers and a very nice atmosphere. Service is also quite good, but on the downside I found the food a bit pricy and not that great. But maybe I was just a bit unlucky. Highly recommended for the music

Davvero un bel locale tipico, dove si respira un'atmosfera che a Bologna si direbbe quella delle osterie di fuori porta... di 40 anni fa!
Anche se il Fado non è il vostro genere apprezzerete certamente la bravura degli artisti che si alternano per tutta la serata! Davvero uno spettacolo! Il cibo è semplice e buono. L'orata poi è veramente favolosa!
Il rapporto qualità prezzo è ottimo considerando anche lo spettacolo di prima qualità!

Nice fado show and decent food. However there is a minimum charge of €25 per person (which is a bit pricey as compare to other). So please visit this place without having dinner elsewhere.

Cozy little restaurant known for their Fado dinner. A reservation in advance is needed to be part of the Fado experiences that they combine with a typical Portuguese dinner. The food is ok and the service is good but the real highlight are the Fado performances that start at about 8 pm until 11 pm. Singers from the neighborhood perform about two or three traditional Fado songs together with absolutely awesome Portuguese guitar players. Definitely a recommendation for everybody wanting to have a true, more private Fado experience.

We had a reservation but were'nt let in as children under 12yrs of age are'nt allowed in!!? Our child is 12 and we've been to quite a few Fado places - never heard such thing. He should ask when taking reservations if there are any children along. This was very disappointing.

Abbiamo prenotato per una serata in questo dove si deve spendere non meno di 25 euro a persona per poter mangiare e ascoltare musica. Io ho preso del vitello al sugo con le patate e la mia compagna un'orata da vbere due birre e una bottiglia di acqua e per finire una pera al vino molto buona e un a specie di crema caramel tutto al costo di 65 euro.
La cena sicuramente niente di che, atrimenti avrei dato la quinta Stella, ma la musica la cordialità dei gestori e la tipicità di questo posto merita sicuramente una serata

Mangiato malissimo servito ancora peggio, servizio e comportamento diverso tra' abitues locali e stranieri non gradevole . Polpo con riso scottissimo tipo pappa, e dal sapore non gradevole .Immangiabile . Verdurine bollite tipo ospedale e cariche d' olio etc ... Fado interpretato, a parte poche eccezioni, da gente di passaggio non certo di alto livello . In compenso conto salatissimo . 50 euro a testa con un vino appena normale e la richiesta finale , tavolo per tavolo , di venderci CD di tutti i componenti al costo di 15 euro l' uno . Fregatura cattura turisti . La mia peggiore esperienza dei miei viaggi nella bellissima Lisbona . Mi sono fidato di recensioni lette precedentemente , che non ho trovato affatto attinenti e parecchio lontane dalla realtà vissuta .

Attrape touriste. Poisson mal cuit, pommes de terre pas cuites, le tout baignant dans l huile. La saucisse portugaise trop seche , une sangria Blanche pas terrible, et enfin impossible de payer séparément (gpe de 6 personnes ). A déconseiller.

Amazing place with excellent fresh food, that is being served steaming hot. There's also a fado performance which is really amazing! Features local artists and musicians even the cooks come out to sing sometimes, imagine that! Enjoied out evening there and will definitely visit this place again when I'm in Lisbon!

Não é bom ambiente para jantar a dois, todos sentam em mesas compartilhadas, pede-se silêncio durante os shows, que não tem intervalo o que torna impossível uma conversa agradável, o peixe veio crú, a casa de banho é minúscula e você tem que praticamente passar por cima dos músicos chamando a atenção de todo público da casa, o atendimento é bom, o staf é atencioso e alegre mas não é o suficiente para amenizar os maus atributos acima.

Sehr nettes Lokal für einen Fado Abend. Achtung die Vorspeisen werden automatisch an den Tisch serviert und man muss sich dann entscheiden was man will. Die Musik ist gut, die Atmopshäreswhr gemütlich und das Essen gut. Alles in allem wirklich top.

Lieux très touristique, aux prix très élevés. La serveuse est là pour vous faire consommer. A peine arrivé et on nous demande si on va prendre repas plus boisson. Le minimum de commande est de 15 euros.. les plats sont bons mais pas extraordinaires. L’accompagnement des plats est inexistant... seule consolation le mini concert de fado.

The music was very good and I really enjoyed the experience. I am happy to pay their $25E minimum but how I ended up paying $37 without even ordering a main dinner is beyond me. Apparently they charge $13E for the bread, cheese and olives they deliver to the table the second you sit down - without mentioning as much. A bit of a scam if you ask me. Just be transparent!! Again, happy to pay for what I order and a minimum for “dinner and a show” but don’t trick me into paying more. That’s deceitful.

This is an intimate Fado restaurant. On 18m2 there is seating for about 30 guests, so be prepared to sit next to a stranger. Bookings are essential if you don't want to miss a truly authentic Fado experience. Mostly fish dishes on the menu. I noticed some of the photos posted are not from A Baiuca so I have posted photos from both the interior and from the street.

Réservation faite depuis quelques jours et heureusement car le lieu est vraiment petit et limité en couverts, 30 à peu près.
On a passé une superbe soirée ritmee par le fado. Chanteurs et chanteuses se sont relayés pour nous faire découvrir ce fado de Alfama. Menus simples à base de poissons grillés. Très bien et on y reviendra avec des amis.

I had a wonderful time here when I was in Lisbon. The food was excellent and so was the Fado. The musicians who perform here are really quite talented! I do recommend either making a reservation or showing up early because the place fills up and most people make reservations. It was just me and I went early so it was easy for me to get a spot, but a larger party would definitely need a reservation. If you go later in the evening they will let you in for drinks and to hear the music after many of the diners have left for the evening. I stayed the whole night and thought the 25 euro minimum was well worth it. Definitely a highlight of my trip to Lisbon!

Awesome experience. Real Fado experience. You better reserve or come around 19:30 to get a place. Alternatively, you can show up after 21:30 and you can get in and still enjoy close to 1.5 hours of performance. Is a performance not a place for have a meal so please keep on mind...no little children are admitted and it is expected, naturally, that you will be quiet listen to the performance

The restaurant felt a bit uncomfortable. It was very hot inside and it felt overcrowded. We were 4 and we shared a table with a friendly couple. It did feel like a very local experience. Great singers and Authentic Portuguese fado in a small restaurant. Food and green wine were very good. $25 per person minimum. They took credit card.

This is a very special place. An authentic experience. You must understand that they put together an atmosphere that reminds a tradicion. You dont pay for the music. That is why the price of the food is so expensive for portuguese prices, but people who gave bad reviews here forgot to mention that you can easyly pay 80€ per person in a fado restaurant. And YES, you need to shut up when they sing, NOT BECAUSE it is a fado tradition, because it should be the behavior expected from civilized people. What surprises me is why people go to listen to music and want to talk at the same time?
Para los espanholes que han dejado comentarios: la comida es la tipica casera portuguesa, claro que si cobra mas que lo normal, porque la comida incluye la musica, nada es gratis. Y si: mientras uno esta a cantar los demas tienen que hacer silencio, y esto mi parece solamente lo mas civilizado.

Primeira coisa que não entendi: eu falo com garçons em português, mas eles respondem em inglês? O que é isso? Não gosta do sotaque brasileiro??
Segunda coisa, tem que pagar 25 euros por prato o que é mínimo, mas oferecem lugar para sentar minúsculo, nem se importam como você se senta com pratos sujos dos vizinhos ao lado.
Não recomendo. Tem lugares bem mais baratos e amigáveis.

Why 4 stars? Really! It is a tourist trap. Meals are awfully expensive (most dishes over 20 euros, water 5 euros etc). I know the musicians need to be paid and all, but that is a steal. One can eat better for half this price.
Oddly, waiter kept replying in English although I only made questions in Portuguese (native speaker here). He could clearly understand me as replies were in line with my question (what the heck???). Several Fado restaurants suffer from the same thing: overpriced but serving simple food.
To me it seems almost like a scam. Simply don't!

No frills indeed, but plenty of soul! I came here on what was sort of an open mic night, where even the cook got up to belt out some Fado. Food and wine was simple and tasty, all at a great price.

The evening for us was spoilt by one of the guitarist who was constantly telling people to shut up and being ridiculously rude about it. It felt like he is sacrificing his great gift to play for us- poor uncultured tourists. Everybody in our group was pretty quiet but he still managed to push me with his elbow.
Other than that most fado singers were good and the food was ok if a bit expensive.

Incredibile experience at this fado restaurant. It feels The food is very good, with a home made taste. You are treated as a welcomed guest. It feels like you're at friends place, having dinner in their kitchen. The music and singing was so touching. The singers are amateurs. Some of them will blow you away because you don't expect them to be so good. The whole staff, from the lady who serves the table to the cook will take their turn in the singing and they all manage to touch your soul, even if you don't understand a single word of Portuguese. The guitar players were professionals and very talented. It might be a little bit more expensive than what many people would expect but we left very happy. Our best fado experience in Portugal

The chances of getting a table are slim to none.
Basic food, cramped and uncomfortable but still extremely engaging and a fantastic experience.

Be aware that you cant get a special table for you and your partner, you'll get a place close to other clients. Musics and songs are typical and very nice, as well as the food. Octopus baiuca was great. The price is also expensive for the city, at least €70 for 2. We were, us + the other clients very surprised by the boss attitude. He was really angry during the whole evening to not say *issed off...we asked 4 times the check. Despite that fact, the other staff was nice.

Le plus désagréable est d'être pris pour un imbécile et escroqué. 54€ à deux, dans un pays où un restaurant honnête fait entrée-plat-dessert pour 20€.
Tout est malhonnête :
- 10€ la choppe de bière! Plus cher qu'à Paris!
- le pain facturé alors qu'on en mange pas ! (Pensez à recompter la note).
- le mec qui racole les passants et qui fait la gueule en partant,
- les pommes de terre froides, l'escalope pas bonne,
- le serveur qui comprend l'anglais sauf quand tu parles des prix,
- quasiment une table sur deux à la terrasse qui conteste la note.
- le fado annoncé n'est jamais venu alors que nous sommes parti tard.

It made our experience in Lisbon so much greater. Amazing food, really fresh and with the home made taste. The environment is just amazing. It feels like a party at your best friend's kitchen. This is true and authentic Portuguese hospitality. The Fado music inside is just amazing, the owner and his staff are professional singers. It's just a fantastic experience to live the Alfama culture. Reserve with time

Petit lieu de Fado qui a tout compris. Bien sur que c'est rempli de touristes mais le repas et l'ambiance créée par les propriétaires et les chanteurs nomades rends ce lieu magique. Le soir où on y était nous avons fini par discuter et rire avec les gens de la table que nous partagions puis danser avec le reste des tables.
Minimum de repas: 25€ (et la proprio vous pousse à consommer mais est généreuse et offre aussi en échange)

Es una taberna tradicional, ideal para escuchar fado. El local es muy pequeño. Sientan a los comensales pegados unos a otros. Así, que uno acaba hablando con desconocidos, contagiados todos del ambiente mágico que se crea en el local.
Había portugueses y turistas. Los cantantes, del barrio, unos mejores y otros peores, van pasando y cantando tres canciones cada uno. También canta el dueño y la cocinera. Hay silencio absoluto cuando se canta.
La comida es mala. No nos gustó ni el Bacallau a bras ni el pulpo. El consumo mínimo es de 25 euros por persona pero se alcanza con facilidad con el oporto de bienvenida -que se cobra- y un plato. El arroz con leche estaba rico.
Recomendable para vivir una experiencia única.

We dont know much about fado - was our first time / but if it is so - we love it / felt like we're invited to someone's neighbourhood to be a part of their tradition - absolutely great experience / that's true - its min. 25 euro diner with fado per person and prices are quite high - for us it wasn't a problem (we went there to eat - ps. food was good, wine too) - but if you don't want to spend so much money - just stop there while walking through Alfama - and listen to one or two songs, doors are open all night - because fado is what it is all about / ps. fado there is thr-mon at 20-24

This place is charming and authentic. Great food and great Fado. Towards the end of the second set all the staff were singing (very well!) including the cooks! Must have been 8 different singers in the course of the evening.

Me encanto, un ambiente espectacular, iba apareciendo gente y todos cantaban fado, voces impresionantes, de la calle, pero con mucho sentimiento El restaurante estaba lleno de gente de diferentes nacionalidades, todos cantando juntos cuando se requería, me pareció increíble.

NO recomendable. Trato de los propietarios muy mal, sólo quieren sacarte el dinero enchufándote más comida y más bebida, con unas formas muy desagradables y te hacen sentir muy incomoda.
El FADO una tomadura de pelo, muy mal todo. Sólo son buenos los dos músico.

Outragious prices, i was offered ( on the street ) normal price diner 18 euro. Inside Drinks , aqua 5 euro, drink for kids 5 euro.. Without asking they served bread and 3 flavoured small tinned pate.. And charged 14 euro.. I left leaving 10 euro instead 14, ordered no drinks.. Bad behaviour, place looks nice.

An experience!
Fado singers are in focus. Expect to arrive 20:00, order, receive food 21:30. In the meantime, the music has started, and an interesting variety of singers perform four numbers in total. The music consists of two parts - each singer sings two fados in each. There's about half an hour of break between the two sets. All in all, you don't converse much, as guests are expected to stay silent when the music's on. Singing was over ca. 23:30 where people promptly started drinking.
Minimum order per person is 25 euro. Taking into account that other fado bars and the likes will charge you 10 euro for the singing alone, the prices were fairly standard. 111 euro for four persons - we all enjoyed our food. The portions are rather large.
And as others have remarked - don't expect FREE porto

Avoid. We wanted order drink, she offerd porto vine in liker glasses, and then robed us on it, and she was acting like it's on house, and should have been on house. Very bad behaviour.

Food was ok, and slightly expensive. Although the live Fado was great and making up for the whole experience. It seems a really authentic and felt performance.
The location also is wonderful and really makes the experience special, especially if you're sitting outside in the square

Als je het mij vraagt, is dit hét Fado- restaurant van Alfama! Je schuift aan aan een van de tafels en kunt kiezen uit een van de simpele maar prima menu's á € 25,- pp. Als het druk is (bijna altijd) zit je met anderen aan een tafel; daar moet je dus wel van houden. De sfeer is vrolijk en ongedwongen; niet allen het personeel barst van tijd tot tijd in gezang uit (geweldig... wát een stemmen!); ook andere aanwezigen laten regelmatig hun zangkunst horen. De keuken is simpel, maar goed; de sfeer is echt geweldig. Absoluut een aanrader!

Fui lá numa Quinta-feira de Outubro e fomos atendidos com simpatia. Houve fados vadios, cantados por não-profissionais, pessoas comuns de Lisboa, das 20h00 até às 24h00, acompanhados por uma guitarra portuguesa e uma viola. O restaurante é realmente muito pequeno, recriando uma tasca à antiga portuguesa. As mesas são umas em cima das outras e o mais provável é os clientes terem de partilhar a mesma mesa com um qualquer estrangeiro desconhecido, o que torna o lugar muito divertido e pitoresco. Os estrangeiros têm dificuldade em respeitar o "silêncio que se vai cantar o fado!", por questões culturais; levam um pouco a mal mandarem-nos calar e ouvir o fado; têm de compreender que é um dos requisitos mínimos da plateia. A tasca tem um consumo mínimo de 25 euros por pessoa, e é importante pedir fatura para se ter a certeza do que se está a pagar, porque com facilidade nos são cobrados produtos que não consumimos. Os pratos principais custam de 17 a 19 euros e tudo é caro. A comida é tradicional portuguesa mas, pouco apurada. Aconselho a ir com a mente aberta e a fazer conversa com o vizinho do lado! Foi muito divertido e uma noite muito bem passada, que nos reportou ao passado.

Muy mal servicio, la mesonera manda a callar a la gente y dice que necesita que escuchen el fado, la comida es regular, el precio caro, las mesas son comunales y te hacen sentar con 8 personas en una mesa de 6, además te piden un consumo mínimo de 25 euros por persona para poder ganar más dinero, si no quieres consumir eso te hace pagar la diferencia hasta completar los 25 euros, te empujan que consumas porto blanco barato, al reclamar hacerca del mal servicio, te responde diciendo que pagues y te vayas que otros más vendrán. En conclusión si esta va a ser tu única experiencia de fado en lisbon, eviten ir a este lugar? Los cantantes son desconocidos y intercambian camiones por alcohol. Este sitio no representa la cultura del fado en Alfama.

I had a great experience there! There were many people that sung and it seemed authentic! It was expensive though. Food was ok, and service was really good given the little space available! I would go again!
