It's a family run restaurant so expect the service to be on the slower side, we waited almost an hour for our food and so did others. The traditional Portuguese food we thought was a bit one dimensional but overall well prepared. Price wise, it's slightly pricey but understandable for this part of time.

This one of the best dinner experience we had. The lady (perhaps the owner) took care of us greatly by explaining and offering the right food menu's and wine choices. Food was amazing and friendly for both seafood and non seafood eater. Will definitely recoomend this place to anyone!

Un excelente restaurante, fuimos a cenar, eramos tres,tomamos el bacalao a la velha, lubina y rape, todo exquisito, recomiendo dejar un sitio para los postres, la tarta de chocolate y la de limón buenísimas.
Si la comida es de primera, el trato es de 10.
Para nosotros ya es cita obligada en nuestra próxima visita a Lisboa.

Très bonne cuisine traditionnelle portugaise. Lotte aux palourdes à l'ail et à la coriandre très bien cuisinée, très bon poulpe au four. Bons vins à un prix raisonnable et excellent desserts maison. Venez dès 19h ou alors réservez. Je recommande.

Loved this place, the food was excellent, especially enjoyed the Octopus dinner. The service was professional, the atmosphere fantastic and the owner/hostess was very friendly, she made the experience a memorable one. Came back a second time because we loved the it so much. I don’t write many reviews but this restaurant deserves my highest praise.

De las mejores cenas en Lisboa, es la segunda vez que voy y como siempre, perfecto.
El solomillo con salsa de café increíble, las gambas y los postres son una locura. Me encanta que estén en un carrito y puedas elegir viéndolos, muchas veces pides sin saber y te llevas una decepción al verlo, pero aquí no pasa.
El servicio de 10, no tuvimos problema con el idioma ya que Guadalupe habla castellano y además nos aconsejó muy bien.
Sin duda volveré en mi próxima visita a Lisboa.

Overpriced!!
no wonder the restaurant were packed with American tourists. no locals.
Food was ok, but there are lot of places with much better priced dish with that kind of food in Lisbon.
Moreover, charging 1 euro for each bread and another 1 euro for one tiny - tiny butter!!?? and olives also. that’s a rip off.
It was placed on the table already, so did not have choice but pay for those even though we rarely touched it.
I would have given 0 star. One star is only for the kind waiters.

My favorite spot in Lisbon for traditional Portuguese food. The staff is incredible welcoming, attentive, and sweet. The wine selection is great, and the food is to die for!!! The Pork with Clams (Alentejo) is by far my favorite dish! It's a must try!!

La dueña muy amable y la comida rica y abundante. Pedimos unas judías verdes en tempera, el rape con almejas y el bacalao al estilo de as velhas y ambos bien. Guardan los postres en una vitrina móvil y eliges el que quieras, la tarta de limón y merengue muy rica también. Es relativamente caro sobre todo comparado con otros sitios de Portugal pero merece la pena.

Excellent place for real Portuguese food. We were a party of 7 and the service was great. Wait staff spoke English and were eager to answer our questions. Dessert cart was absolutely wonderful.

Portugese food is known to be excellent but in this restaurant is something else! There are plenty of options in the menu, the staff is really friendly and speak good English. Quality price relation couldn’t be better!
The place keeps a real Portuguese atmosphere which makes it really cozy and charming.
We had a really pleasant experience. A great and yummy ending after a long day walking up and down beautiful Lisbon.

Typical Portuguese restaurant with high quality fresh food.
Menu is relatively short but complete with both fish and meat dishes. Starters are mouth watering. Staff is friendly, helpful and professional, always ready to give suggestions and explanations.

Wonderful experience ! True high quality traditional Portuguese food, couldn’t find a better place all week despite trying many other restaurant. Extremely good starter, bacalhau was brilliant (one of the best I ever had), octopus as well. Dessert trolley super appealing too. Owner is extremely nice, I didn’t feel welcome this way for a long time.
Booking is advised, we were lucky to get a table as there was a big group last minute cancellation.

Nette Atmosphäre. Wir haben den Fisch und das portugiesische Schwein genommen.
Unbedingt zu empfehlen. Der offene Wein ist gut und zum Essen passend. Als Nachtisch haben wir noch den Schokoladenkuchen genossen.

Maravilloso restaurante con una comida riquísima, una carta variada, y es un sitio muy bonito y muy agradable. Una de las camareras era española, nos recomendó perfectamente. Muy bueno. Comida típica portuguesa, los camareros encantadores y muy atentos, la dueña majisima.
Comimos de entrante sopa del día muy rica y unas almejas, y unas judías verdes empanadas que nunca habíamos probado 100% recomendables!!
Después pedimos un rodaballo para compartir entre dos, nos lo trajeron ya dividido con ensalada y patatas asadas en cada plato.
El vino de la casa, vino blanco, bastante bueno también, estaban atentos de servírnoslo siempre que vaciábamos la copa, impresionante.
Por último, te traen un carrito con los postres caseros para que elijas el que te entre por la vista.
Cuando pagamos, el camarero se equivocó y nos cobró una sopa demás, se dio cuenta cuando salíamos del restaurante y vino corriendo a devolvernos el dinero, gente amable y honrada, un gusto.
Volvería.

Fantástico servicio, muy atentos en todo momento, y la calidad y sabor de la comida excepcional.
Pedimos una sip de día por 4€, unas vainas de guisantes rebozadas típicas de Lisboa y un pescado a compartir para dos. Los tres platos estaban muy buenos.
No existe carta de postres, pero tranquilos que os sorprenderán para mostrarlos.
El precio es un poco tirando a alto para lo que sería un sitio típico de Portugal, pero la zona ayuda a esos precios.
Bastante recomendable.

Loved this place. We were in Lisbon for 5 days, 2 short stays, and we ate there twice. Great menu, service and food. And loved having the owner come to our table to chat with us. She gave us some tips for the Algarve region which were fabulous.

Merveilleusement bon! Nous avons choisi le poulpe et la lotte aux palourdes. C'était excellent. Les desserts sont aussi à tomber! Une belle surprise lorsqu'on voit arriver le chariot de douceurs et qu'on peut en choisir plusieurs. Les serveurs sont également très sympas. Bref une adresse à ne pas louper sur Lisbonne pour une ambiance conviviale, un bon rapport qualité prix et une cuisine de qualité qui éveille les papilles.

To be honest, I was a bit thrown off by this place as we were greeted by a brightly lit room and no staff, but we quickly warmed up to it. It's all about family style delicious food, and an excellent wine list - even the house wines were delicious. The staff was attentive and the owner super nice interacting with every table in the dining room. Even the simplest things like the greens with chestnuts (cheapest menu item) were really well prepared and tasty. This isn't a place you'd go for a fun ambience, but rather for absolutely delicious cooking and great family-style service.

Restaurante escondido na rua da Conceição com Av liberdade, entramos por acaso e que sorte. Lugar com cara de antigo mas muito aconchegante. Comemos um bacalhau com batatas e arroz delicioso acompanhado por um ótimo vinho. Sobremesa um doce tipo quindim mas com amêndoas delicioso. Seu Joaquim muito simpático que nos serviu. 服务的女士特别友好。看说不要橄榄觉得咸就特别嘱咐了菜。点的前菜虾没处理虾线吃着牙碜。章鱼不错。栗子猪肉肉是纯瘦的还算烂。再配点酱做猪扒包合适。单吃有点寡淡份量巨大。栗子一般没什么栗子味儿味道类似菜栗。推荐蘑菇陪火腿碎看着油吃着还算清爽。建议比预定时间晚点点去。七点预约时间。员工还在吃饭在门厅挤着7个人然后外边在下雨。

Quem for a Lisboa tem que ir ao restaurante As Velhas. Ambiente agradável, comida excelente e otimo atendimento. O melhor bacalhau e polvo a lagareiro que ja comi, é divino. É tão bom que voltamos 2 vezes ao restaurante e pedimos novamente o bacalhau. Recomendo, sem duvidas é uns dos melhores restaurantes de Lisboa.

If you are looking for a delicious, traditional Portuguese dinner look no further. This place was hands down our favorite meal during our trip. Service is professional and friendly. The owner came around twice to check on us and our waiter was full of excellent recommendations. The atmosphere is slightly upscale but the dress is casual. We arrived with reservations on a Monday night (but not needed since we dined at 1900). Olives dressed in fresh parsley and garlic and bread were already on the table. The olives (€1.50) were delightful. We passed on the bread to save room and were not charged for them. Entrees are a bit pricey for the area but the portions are huge! Everything was cooked to perfection and well-seasoning. We preferred the pork and clams over the cod but both were delicious. If you are light eaters I recommend sharing a meal. The wine list is well curated with lots of local wine. We order a wonderful Vinho Verde (€18) to wash everything down with. Make sure you save room for some Port and homemade desserts.

Tamboril à bolhão pato é simplesmente divinal. Polvo a lagareiro e peixinhos da horta também deixam saudades. Ambiente e serviço fantástico. As Velhas é um dos esconderijos mais bem guardados de quem julgava já não haver espaços assim em pleno coração de Lisboa.

Best food ever! I always have some “peixinhos da horta” and a “bife à café” and it never ever disappoints. Anything you have is so delicious! The deserts are to die for too! This is a family owned establishment and when my friends and I ate here, we became part of this lovely family. We felt as if we belonged there.
We stopped to eat here when visiting Lisbon for the night. I wanted to try the local cuisine of Lisbon. I had the Roasted Cod and it was a religious experience.
I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for an Authentic Portugese establishment that prepares and serves their food with love.

My wife, myself, and our friends had the single most incredible food experience of our lives at As Velhas. Not only is the food delicious. But Guadalupe and the chefs made us feel completely like family! In fact one of the chefs taught me a better technique to peel string beans!! We laughed and laughed and our group left feeling more connect to each other than before. That is what this restaurant is about. Creating a space where people can connect and bond. I can’t wait to come back!

The Best cod in Lisbon!!! The Best appetizers, food in general is super!!! Service is excepcional as the owner, Guadalupe, welcomes you and walk you through the menu. Price is rigth. We will be back with a group of friends in July 25 as we are taking a river Cruise out of Porto and will go to Lisbon 2 Nights before just to go back to As Velhas!!! If you go to Lisbon, As Velhas is a MUST!!! Make Reservations...is a small and cozy Restaurant.

This is one of these places where you go and from the moment you open the door you know something good is going to happen. It’s a small place with rather old school interior. Everything is simple and looks like grandma place. I was serviced by two gentlemen (would not call them waiters...) around their 60’s, both speaking minimum five languages, ready to advise but in this nice, old school way when you feel don’t don’t try to sell you anything. Super nice experience. I had shrimps with garlic and octopus. Shrimps were perfect, tender inside and crispy outside, served in cast iron dish. Octopus was a paradise, very tender and very juicy. I also asked for half bottle of white wine which was also very nice. It’s not very cheap place but also not expensive. Most important: you can really taste that people working there really love this place and they like their customers, too. It’s the place where the owner greets you at your table, or just stops by to say few words or ask if you like the food. It’s very cosy and inclusive place. Highly recommended. I will come back for sure.
PS. I just learned I can’t add videos any more to my feedback. It’s a pity cause i recorded squizzling octopus in hot pot and it was super very cool!

I visited tonight for dinner and I found it a very pleasant place. The best element was the friendly and professional service. The food is very good and I enjoyed it. The reason for not giving a higher score, and be aware of it if you go, is the trick to serve you (just as soon as you sit at the table) bread, olives and butter... which you will then see included in the bill. I find any trick like this very unprofessional since those items are not complementary.

Our favourite place for home style food. The marisco (seafood rice) was the best we had in in Lisbon (by far the best in the whole city because we tried like 4 places and this reminded us of home!!!)
The male waiters have their own roles so don't feel excluded when they don't address you. The lady host was amazing, calm, caring and attentive.
There are reviews here about price of bread. Just dont eat it and you won't be charged. This concept is delivered at every restaurant in Lisbon (from cheap to expensive places) It shouldn't be a surprise. Also the prices are all written in the menu.

Probably the best dish I've ever had other then tasting the dish my partner was eating at the same place (and I refuse to normally eat octopus). An authentic and delicious experience. Attentive service, very polite and extremely welcoming! I would whole heartedly recommend this place. Thank you As Velhas.

Amazing experience. I don’t write reviews often but this place easily stands out. If in Lisbon definitely recommend, as owner was so extremely kind and the food was delicious and very authentic Portuguese. Must go!

If you want to go to an authentic Portuguese restaurant that has amazing food and an even better owner/staff go to As Velhas. Food was incredible, but the owner, Guadalupe, was so kind and thoughtful. Really recommend to anyone looking for a great meal and even better people!

We wanted to go there for dinner today but once we reached the place we realised it wasn't the right choice: everyone there was twice our age, prices were higher than we expected based on TripAdvisor's indicators (20 euro for a main course) and the place generally didn't feel particularly cozy.

He ido con mi pareja a comer ya que daban muy buenas reseñas y una alta puntuación, pero no podíamos estar más equivocados.
Lo único que ha valido la pena ha sido el servicio, los camareros han estado muy atentos y serviciales. Pero comida era igual que la de un comedor escolar, muy básica y sin ningún esfuerzo. Los postres ha sido lo peor, el pastel de chocolate era una crema compactada sin bizcocho ni base alguna, era demasiado empalagoso y el pastel de huevo con canela era incomestible.
Demasiado caro por tan mala calidad de la comida
Me sabe mal dar tan mala puntuación con el buen servicio que hemos tenido, pero hay mejor comida en un Mc Donald's.

Overpriced. Waiters concentrate on the older, rich-looking guests. As a younger couple, we were not paid any attention through most of the short dinner time we spent at the place.
The olives and bread that were on the table when we walked got included in the bill. The shrimp entree was average. The rabbit was below average - the meat was not of good quality and the potatoes were tasteless. Did not stay for desert.

A bit pricey for what it is. Good traditional Portuguese dishes and good wine selections. But it's possible to eat at Lisbon with the same quality with a 1/3 of the price.
The owner is a very warm person.

Bon vin (demandez conseil au serveur), personnel agréable, prix démocratique et je recommande vivement le porc aux palourdes (spécialité de la maison, ainsi que la «game sausage» en entrée).

Excellent food, even better service. Very hospitable and warm! We ordered the steak and sea bass and they were both terrific. The owner treats the restaurant like a home kitchen with lots of personal attention. Would definitely come back.

Приветливый и компетентный персонал. Хорошая винная карта. Домашний, уютный ресторан. Закуски на уровне, увы того же нельзя сказать об основных блюдах. Пересоленное пережаренное. После ужина ощущение тяжести в желудке. Осьминога невозможно было есть, и мы сказали об этом персоналу, который без претензий заменил нам осьминога на морского окуня, блюдо куда более удачное. Десерты хорошие. К ним подается жинжа за счет заведения. Жаль, что не повезло с основными блюдами.

I chose to come to this place on my last night because of the reviews. I came here alone on a friday night.
Lets start with the positives - the interior is nice, love the dessert cart, and the wine recommendation was great (the half bottle i ordered ran out so they gave me another one). The staff is excellent. Attentive to your needs, asked for feedback for every dish, and all have a smile on their faces despite the busy work environment. Given that the restaurant was full (friday night) they were pretty busy.
I waited 20 mins after my main dish for someone to clean it up and for me to ask for dessert. The free Ginjanha (cherry shot) at the end was a nice touch.
The downsides- the food was pretty mediocre, especially for the price. The shrimp was ok - the sauce didnt quite permeate into the shrimp although the garlic oil was delicious. The most expensive dish was the cut of veal, which i ordered - and that was a huge disappointment. I asked for medium rare, and the meat was well done. It was unseasoned, and so asked for salt. The iberico on top was too thick and hard to chew, and I spit out most of it and didnt eat the other half.
Overall the food was mediocre. I had much more delicious food for much better prices.
Maybe i had high expectations - thought i was in for a treat. How unfortunate. Two stars because the most important thing about a restaurant is the food - and the food was mediocre and bad for the price.

We had a great meal at As Velhas. It was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. It did not seem like a tourist restaurant but somewhere the locals visit. Our waiter was very patient explaining the various menu items so that we could make good choices. He was not the last bit impatient. I appreciate that he recommended a great bottle of wine that was very inexpensive. We had the seafood rice. Very delicious. This was one of our best meals in Portugal. I would definitely go back my next time in Lisbon.

Boa comida, ambiente agradável, bom serviço e preços compatíveis com demais restaurantes de Lisboa (não são baixos). O único inconveniente que tivemos foi pedir um prato de entrecote e uma sopa, porém vieram dois entrecotes e uma sopa. Quando reclamamos, insistiram que tínhamos pedido dois entrecotes. Entretanto, após conversa eles entenderam que tinha sido um mal entendido, retiraram o prato adicional, continuaram a nos servir perfeitamente e não cobraram pelo engano.

Comida maravilhosa a um preço justo. Em um ambiente típico e acolhedor. Os funcionários falam muito bem o inglês. A ementa é diversificada. Recomendo o Bacalhau da casa. A garrafeira também tem opções muito diversas. Recomendo e certamente retornarei.

What a find! You'll probably eat cheaper in Lisbon, but the food is delicious. Atmosphere is laid back and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Treat yourself and pop along to this place for it's hearty Portuguese fare and friendly atmosphere

Fuimos a As Velhas por recomendación de un amigo y fue la mejor cena de nuestra estancia en Lisboa. Comida auténtica, de calidad y a buenos precios.
Sólo tengo buenas palabras para la experiencia en As Velhas, tanto la atención del personal como la calidad de la comida fueron excelentes. Guadalupe está siempre pendiente de las mesas con una sonrisa y se interesa por cada aspecto del servicio para que sea lo mejor posible.
Seguimos recomendaciones de Guadalupe y nos encantó todo. Creo que las fotos explican todo mejor que cualquier palabra. Sin duda recomendado

Went for dinner here last night and it was delicious. I had the grilled sea bass and it was superb. No kids menu but they gladly put together a simple meal for my daughter, which she devoured. Very friendly and attentive staff.

This is a great restaurant. It is well situated (close to Avenida metro) and the dining room is very comfortable and atmospheric. I particularly like the English 19th century Vanity Fair caricatures that line some of the walls. It helps the atmosphere that the tables are generously spaced.
I really appreciated that when at booking we agreed a particular time but they said, "The table is yours, come when your are ready". There's absolutely no pressure to finish the meal so they can get another few covers.
The food was the best we ate in our 10 days in Portugal. A well balanced menu and helpful advice on both food and wine. My only regret was that we didn't have time for a repeat visit. Do go if you get a chance.

This was the best gastronomic event that we experienced in Lisbon. The food was fantastic. Try the octopus and the cod. The vino verde was exceptional and the lemon meringue pie was the best we ever had. The atmosphere was cozy, warm and friendly. Staff made you feel special. Guadeloupe and her staff deserve the highest accolades. Thanks for the experience!!

What a gem of a restaurant, we went there 4 times during a recent visit to Lisbon for my birthday! Guadaloupe, Paulo and Joaquim went to so much trouble to ensure we enjoyed our meals there. The atmosphere is welcoming, tables aren't squashed together so everyone has enough space, service was prompt without being rushed and the table is yours for as long as you want it. The food is best described as Portuguese home cooking; every dish we had from starters through mains to deserts was absolutely delicious with portion sizes big enough for hungry people without being overwhelming. And the bill is incredibly reasonable. I know of few places in the UK where you can enjoy food of this quality at a similar price. We will definitely go back for when we next visit Lisbon.

Remarkable quaint restaurant. Plenty of atmosphere excellent helpful staff. Great specials. Lamb was so succulent. Octopus tender. Prawns in garlic were to die for and the green beans in tempura were a revelation. This is a hidden jewel in Lisbon !

Um restaurante de comida tradicional portuguesa muito bem feita, com porções bem servidas. O preço é um pouco alto para os padrões de Portugal, mas vale muito a pena como uma janta especial para alguma data a ser celebrada. Um dos pontos altos é o gentil atendimento dos garçons e da dona do restaurante - muito atenciosos -, além das sobremesas (destaque para a "Delícia de Chocolate", uma espécie de mousse de chocolate feito apenas desta iguaria e ovos)

One of our best meals. The food and service are exceptional. Guadeloupe, the family part owner, was extremely accommodating and gracious throughout our meal. She and the waiter guided us to order the perfect meal and wine for us and were tremendous hosts. The food was perfect. The seabass in olive oil and garlic was some of the best I've had. The fried sardines very tasty. Cod was great and chocolate cake and lemon meringue pie amazing. Topped it all off with some local cherry liquor. Price for two was extremely reasonable at 70 euros. Highly recommended for an excellent meal, great experience, and nice value.
