We went for dinner at this restuarant yesterday as it was near an art exhibition we were visiting. We were 5 people. My wife and I are punjabi Indians from the UK and have intimate knowledge of Indian food. We found a lot of shortcomings and I am compelled to give my comments for those who genuinely seek good authentic Indian food recognising that the Indian sub-continent has numerous cuisines.
1: We ordered 3 different starters and all three were awful! Sheek Kebabs were 2 tiny pieces with no meat or flavour; the Jinga Pakora plate had 3 small shrimps with poor flavour; Aloo Pakora plate with 2 pieces could hardly be described as pakoras; will certainly advise anyone not ordering the starters.
2. They only serve Cobra Beer and this in stainless steel glasses! very odd as they do not keep local beers
3: Channa Daal, and Karaih Gosh, murg tikka were acceptable as were the rice and paratha and nan.
4: Palak Paneer had hardly any paneer; Camaroa coco had measly 3 prawns and rest gravy!
5. Service was not attentive and one had to call for it.
6: Bob the owner mentioned that they served gujarati food; this certainly was not gujarati cuisine ?
In Lisbon there are many genuine Indian restaurants offering far superior quality food.
Zaafran is lucky in having a good location and clients less familiar with Indian food. This restaurant needs qualified professional chef who will prepare authentic food . In the meantime we certainly will not visit this eatery.

Plats goûteux, réponses à nos demandes...
Comme dans tout restaurant au Portugal, si vous consommez ce qui est à table avant la commande ou que vous n'avez pas demandé, ce sera facturé, sauf si vous indiquez clairement que vous ne le désirez pas.
Nous avons mangé ces amuse bouche et avons essayé le plat dégustation (à volonté). C'était excellent, surtout grâce aux explications du patron.
Nous avons suivi ses conseils pour le dessert et ne le regrettons pas.
A recommander.
Le vendredi soir, un spectacle de danse du ventre est à l'affiche. Nous étions un mercredi...

Expensive. Briyani was nice. Non was ok. Other dishes we had was average. To prepare masala tea they take 25 mins. After waiting for 45 mins still haven't got. Palak panner is not good. Average restaurant. Expensive

The ambience is good, other than that there isn't anything great about this place for the price you pay.
The Chicken Biryani was above average but the Gajar Halwa didn't even taste like Gajar Halwa.
The service wasn't great either. They just ignored me once I ordered (they were extra good to couples though). I had to wait a long time to just get my bill and pay.

It was a fun and enjoyable experience. The food was amazing, the hospitality was brilliant and there was a fun atmosphere. I extremely recommend the chicken tikka biriyani. It's the best meal I've ever eaten. The price wasn't too much overall, but this restaurant is a must for tourists looking to relax with some belly-filling food!

Excelente atendimento e comida.
Dos 3 funcionários com quem contactei, os mesmos tinham uma simpatia acima da média. Excelente comida indiana. Para quem não seja muito versado neste tipo de gastronomia aconselho o prato Thaali, para dividir (travessa circular com pequenas porções de vários pratos), complementado por outro à escolha. Se tiverem dúvidas ou necessitarem de sugestões basta perguntar a algum colaborador, que prontamente serão auxiliados.
Por fim, preço acessível, ajustado à qualidade do serviço.
Voltarei.

I've been to many Indian restaurants in multiple countries, but every time I go to Zaafran I am always amazed at how "comfortable" their food is. The tikka massala is very creamy and non sweet (thank god), the samosa is very nice, the rice and nan are good as well, and the onion bahji is also pretty nice. All in all, its fantastic food at great price.

Cenamos muy bien. Todo el personal son muy amables. Nos dejamos aconsejar y comimos muy bien. Pollo Tikka masala, gambas con salsa de coco muy rico y acompañados de arroz basmati, arroz con verduras (un poco picante pero muy rico), nam de queso y ajo y para beber agua, cerveza y dos lassis de mango. Este restaurante é um sucesso. Podemos dizer segue é um restaurante com explicações. O proprietário explica tudo. Com mistura os vários condimentos, sugere pratos e explica porquê. Normalmente comemos a degustação e nunca nos arrependemos. Hoje quando penso em comida indiana vou ao Zaafran.

Enjoyed this resto, especially as it was difficult to find Halal food in Lisbon. The kulfi was AMAZING! The website however is a bit misleading, as we went in anticipating Portugese and Indian options - but were only presented Indian options. The thaali is a great option but ALOT of food. Also, I asked them to pack my food so I can give it to a homeless man standing outside and they charged me 4EUR to pack my food which was pretty disappointing.

Cosy with a good atmosphere.What a find!
The staff but also the owners (Bob and Fátima) made us feel welcome and served us attentively throughout the night. I ate the chicken Biryani (thank you Nandini Mohan for your comment), it was a mouth-watering. For desert the ginger ice cream with carrot halwa was a perfect match.
Definitely hope to go return soon.

Overpriced compare to the quantity; we waited more than 15mins just to get the menu; it took another 10mins for the owner to come down to our table to take our food order; it felt waiters weren’t allowed to take food order and we were kind of forced to be waited for the owner to take our food order which was very annoying. The meal for our daughter came out completely different than what we actually ordered and expected; when we raised the concern to one of the waiters we were advised to wait for the owner to come down to explain to us which he never did; we found it quite disturbing..although the curries we had were pleasantly cooked but the service and the experience we had at Zaafran weren’t very pleasant.. I did not expect such poor service at a pricey restaurant like Zaafran.
I hope they review their service standard and take action to improve. I would not recommend Zaafran to my fiends at this time.

I was surprised that this restaurant had a 4.3 rating. It doesn’t deserve it. They were somehow out of their lunch special at 1:30, and yet my mother ordered the exact same dish off the menu. It seems like a scam to me. The amount of food you get from the menu compared to the price is embarrassingly small. The bathroom stinks of mothballs, and you can smell this when the door is opened. Would not recommend this place at all.

This is the best Indian restaurant all over Europe.
When here be sure to try lamb cury as main course and ginger ice cream with carrot Halwa as desert.

One of the dishes served as part of the lunch tasted weird and had a lot of oil.

Excelente experiência gastronómica onde viajamos sem sair de Portugal. Adorei a sobremesa: gelado de gengibre com um doce de cenoura e mandioca. A combinação dos três é uma explosão incrível de sabores.
Tem uma sala ampla e uma esplanada.
Tem também dança do ventre ao jantar às quintas-feiras.

I am indian and this is not indian food... this is more like a very mild and dull fusion of portugese and Indian food (I guess?) In addition, I was served cold chicken, amongst a thali of luke warm varieties. I should have known better with how fast my food came out on a very busy night ( 5 minutes on Valentine’s Day with a House full). They were only worried about numbers not quality on this day, as they didn’t even give me a plate or ask for drinks. Oh and my spoon set was on my food-literally..Yes, the one that someone wraps with their hands and places it everywhere before it gets to table. I went here based on reviews, but was quite disappointed. I had indian food (at another restaurant) in Lisbon during my visit and it was very good, so there is places for people who love authentic Indian food in Lisbon. Oh and they don’t take American Express or discover(?!), for any Americans. You better have visa or cash(!). The two star were for ambience and presentation of food only.

Its OK, but the food for me was below what I expect for Indian food. The onion barji was a little flavorless, as were the sauces with the popadoms. The veggie dishes were OK. I do not plan to return to this restaurant. However, it was popular and the owner was on hand to ensure you had a great experience. Perhaps my expectations are too high

Relação preço/qualidade excelente.
Bom serviço, atendimento muito simpático. Vieram vários funcionários perguntar se estava tudo bem e se precisávamos de mais alguma coisa ao longo do jantar. Aparecemos sem reserva e esperamos cerca de 10-15minutos por uma mesa.
Comida divinal e optima para partilhar! Comemos o caril de camarão com molho de côco (bem equilibrado equilibrado mas que podia ser mais picante), galinha tikka massala (cozinhado na perfeição) e baingan bartha (uma beringela fabulosa) e recomendamos tudo. Arroz basmati bem solto e aromatizado como acompanhamento. Não comemos sobremesa porque estávamos já cheios.
1 dose de cada um dos pratos+3 cervejas cobra+1 agua+ entradas ficou a 41€ e qualquer coisa + gorjeta bem merecida :)
O espaço é agradável, ficamos na esplanada.
Ps- Cuidado com os molhos de entrada , todos ótimos e interessantes mas dois são bem picantes!

Embora não apreciar muito a comida indiana, tudo o que comi neste restaurante tinha um sabor especial. Costumam recomendar que molhos se devem usar para tirar o máximo partido de cada prato servido. Uma mistura de sabores fantástica para o paladar. Comi o frango grelhado. É barato e dá para duas pessoas maioritariamente.

Meh. Zaafran may ballyhoo for a traditional Indian restaurant experience but everything from the mood to the food is barely mainstream. Simply not as fragrant or really as spicy as it should be, it's just another crowd-pleasing ethnic eatery with nothing really standing out.

Il faut absolument se rendre dans le restaurant Zaafran. Excellent accueil, vous découvrirez la cuisine indienne dans un cadre chaleureux. Patron très sympathique qui nous a même expliqué comment manger les plats. Pour 20€ nous avons eu un assortiment des plats les plus connus d'Inde à volonté ainsi qu'une démonstration de danse indienne. Vraiment génial !

It was a while ago but the warning still stands. My wife and I used to be regulars until one day we were having "lunch special menu" and my wife decides she had enough to eat and asks the waiter to get the leftovers in a takeaway box. The waiter proceeds with what he was asked for but he is abruptly interrupted by his boss, the owner of the restaurant, who walks to our table and TOSS the plate on the table, saying the following: "- You come here for lunchtime and the price is already special so no way I am going to give you also a takeaway box". I could see the waiter was embarrassed, he later apologised for the manner of his boss but only to find ourselves reaching for the check with a promise to NEVER set foot to this restaurant again.

Um aspecto menos positivo foi o facto de a nós servirem ao início 2 tipos de arroz e depois quando se pede para repetir só vem de 1 tipo.

What a complete let down! If I had the option to rate this place zero star, I would. One star is far too generous.
Paul, the waiter, offered the world on a plate. He delivered absolute tasteless, dry food. What a waste of €40.

They were miserly in the condiment refills.
I've had a few curries in my lifetime. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you order a curry, you would expect sauce in the curry. Not this place! Pieces of dry meat, placed on a plate. No sauce, no masala. Just pieces of meat served with boiled rice.
I visited this place because of the rave reviews. I'm sorry, there's no way these reviews are from folk that are customers.
What a dospointment. Avoid at all costs.

I wish I could give a slap instead of a star. Guys, please don't waste your money, time and energy at this place. I ordered biryani from the menu and it clearly stated that the biryani comes with boiled egg. The biryani was served cold and without any salad or raita and the egg was missing. I asked the waiter regarding the egg, Salad and Raita. He took the biryani in the back and after 5 minutes came back and I was told that chef said no more egg with biryani. He then went back and brought sweet super cold yogurt and called it raita. There was absolutely no presentation and the rice bowl was not warm at all. It looked like they had the left over food in the fridge and that is what he served and forgot to fully heat it up in the microwave. I could not take more than few bites from that bowl and asked the waiter to put the food in the box so I could bring it back to the hotel and use the microwave to heat it up. I paid the check and came outside the restaurant and noticed that there were no utensil whatsoever in the bag. I went back and again the waiter didn't have a clue if they had any disposable forks. The waiter then went inside the kitchen to ask the master chef if he is allowed to give out a damn plastic fork. After 5 minutes of waiting he came back and I was told they do not have any disposable fork or a spoon. Can you imagine running a restaurant without having disposable utensils? What if my order was a take away instead? Do they expect me to eat with my fingers in my hotel room? What kind of stupid service is this? Come visit us in US and we will tell you what customer service means. -1 star rating for these dumb crap people. Never ever coming back to this place again.

A wonderful tasting experience lead by Paolo our English fluent waiter. Vegetarian and non- vegetarian tastings were great. The Indian ginger ice cream was the icing on a fabulous dinner.

We went here on a Thursday, when the owners decide what you eat. We allowed them to surprise us. We felt very welcome thanks to the server and the owner, who introduced everything to us and showed us the Indian way of eating.
The food was absolutely lovely. It was my first Indian meal and I'm sold. The menu was an entree, a big plate full of different food and a dessert. The price was €20 p.p., relatively expensive for the city but it was more than worth it.

This is the second Indian I have tried in Lisbon and both were poor. The rice portion was very small, the chicken tikka was basically a portion of orange coloured cream, no flavour, no spice. I am now having to cook more food after eating their poor meal. The chana dal was good (a very easy meal to cook) and the garlic naan was also good. If you visit this restaurant and want some real Indian food ask them to add more spice and make the curry more 'indian'. After complaining about the tikka their response was "that's the way Portuguese like their Indian food". When I go to an Indian I expect Indian food. Avoid this restaurant... You will be disappointed. If anyone knows of a good Indian restaurant please share.

Serviço não correspondente aos preços praticados. Preparem-se para ver a conta ser trazida com os cafés, sem ter sido requisitada, numa atitude de quem deseja ver os clientes saírem rapidamente, mesmo que se esteja longe da hora de fecho. Também é estranho o hábito de nos trazerem a primeira dose de cerveja (indiana, muito boa, marca COBRA...) já servida em copos metálicos e se se pedir uma nova cerveja ela ser então trazida na garrafa, com a sensação de a segunda ser maior do que a primeira... estranho. As regras de serviço deixam algo a desejar, apontando para um amadorismo irritante dos empregados. (Debruçarem-se à nossa frente, sobre a mesa, para retirarem qualquer coisa nela existente é frequente).

Love the Indian/Goa food. The owner is always around and helps you discover how to better taste the flavours, etc. Very nice, but at some moment, as I was going there so many times he became too friendly and we've stoped going... I'll go back again time to time for the spinachs with cream and shrimps with a strange indian name...
