It's been many years since I visited La Fortaleza de Sagres, Sagres Fortress, which is where legend has it that Prince Henry, the Navigator, established his famous school of navigation that spawned some great European explorers, such as Christopher Columbus. Columbus reputedly arrived here when he was 24 years old when by one of those quirks of fate he ended up on the doorstep of the Sagres school of navigation.
Columbus was said to have managed to escape there when the armed convoy on his way from Genoa to England in May 1476, of which he was a member of officer crew, was attacked by pirates off Cape St Vincent. It's not known exactly how long Columbus remained at the School of Navigation, but hearsay says that is where he learned the skills to pursue his dream of voyages of discovery to the New World.
This is the most western point of continental Europe and makes an interesting historical detail on a journey along the Algarve Coast of Portugal.

Construída no alto da Falésias , proporciona uma bela vista do mar porém há construções recentes em seu interior e túnel construído para ouvir o som das ondas tem suas paredes todas marcadas por atos de vandalismo de seus visitantes que grafam seus nomes nas paredes

Es un lugar fantástico donde puedes apreciar el faro y el cabo de San Vicente. Tienes vistas preciosas en las que puedes ver grutas y acantilados increíbles. Tienes unos caminos buenísimos para poder pasear tranquilamente.

Tja wat valt hier over te zeggen.
Het is leuk om even een rondje te lopen maar met een uurtje ben je wel uitgekeken.
Ik heb niet veel kunnen vinden over de historie van het fort. In het winkeltje waren wel meer dingen te vinden maar dan moest je het wel kopen.
Er is een kerkje, souvenir winkel, en wat vieze toiletten.
Toch vind ik dat je het wel gezien moet hebben vandaar 3 sterren.

Visite intéressante d'un point de vue historique et visuel. Des bornes avec des explications sur le lieu, la faune et la flore sont situés tout au long d'un parcours qui longe le bord des falaises. Pensez a prendre des boissons et de quoi vous protéger du soleil ou des intempéries avant de passer la porte de la forteresse.

L'entrée ne vous coûtera que trois euros par personne, et vous pourrez alors pénétrer dans cette étendue aride d'ambiance de bout du monde, où la roche calcaire remplace l'herbe verte. Des chemins de pavés portugais vous permettront d'aller admirer la mer déchaînée où les courants marins se rencontrent violemment. Un auditorium a été construit permettant de mettre en valeur les sons naturels que produit l'eau de mer dans les caves qu'elle a creusées. Et c'est impressionnant .

Local que merece sem duvida uma visita, só não se justifica o valor pago de 3 € para poder entrar, sem direito a acesso a mais informações/conteúdos além do que consta nas placas informativas - em que maioria das quais estava em mau estado tornando-se impossível ler o quer que seja. Estava na expectativa que no valor da entrada, tivesse acesso a algum espaço museológico, mas nada disso.

Awesome views of the ocean on three sides and once past the welcome wall, be prepared for a great walk around the perimeter. We saw surfers, fishers on the top with line in the ocean way down below and lots of different birds. There are not a lot of outbuildings. The imagination of the history can easily be seen as you look out over the water and envision a sailing ship rounding the corner and attacking!

Je ne met que 3 étoiles à ce site qui est magnifique et en mérite largement plus, à cause de l'accueil reçu. Personnel peu disponible, renseignements erronés et prix payé (12 €) pour deux très déraisonnable.
Les explications données étaient fausses, en effet la personne de la caisse ne parlait pas français et très mal l'anglais nous a donné de mauvais renseignements sur la validité de notre billet sur d'autres sites. Bref, on s'est faits avoir !!!! Dommage !!!

Apesar de não muito bem pr preservada, a fortaleza tem uma vista linda para o mar (excelente para ver o pôr do sol). Dentro da fortaleza há também uma caverna que faz o barulho das ondas ecoar de forma exuberante. É uma caminhada demorada, mas extremamente prazerosa.

No information whatsoever about opening hours at the site. No signboards. I was there Jan 22nd, an ordinary Wednesday, I thought. Closed. Then some people around informed me that Jan 22 is a regional holiday, Saint Vicente's day. Fortress closed!
I really hope some better information at the site soon!!

J'adore cet endroit, l'énergie présente. Mais la dernière fois que j'y suis allée j'ai été très déçue. D'abord, parce que les pêcheurs laissent leurs filets traîner, ils laissent tout dans la nature, les oiseaux présents se retrouvent prisonniers dans les filets, nous en avons libéré 2 dans la même visite, ça fait mal au cœur.... De plus, les ***** touristes s'amusent à uriner sur les murs de la chambre auditive, ça pue, c'est infernal.
Mais cet endroit restera tout D e même l'un de mes préféré à Sagres

Schöne alte und sehr weitläufige Festungsanlage. Man kann von hier aus gut auf die Küste schauen.Was mich verwundert hat, ist das hier in der Höhe an den Felsklippen Angler standen um zu fischen.Um sich die Anlage richtig anzusehen sollte man aber viel Zeit mitbringen da es hier viel zusehen und zu lesen gibt.

Sin duda vale la pena pagar los 3 euros que cuesta la entrada para disfrutar de un largo paseo por el interior de la fortaleza y admirar sus espectaculares acantilados, su pequeña iglesia, su enorme rosa de los vientos, su peculiar laberinto con sorpresa en el interior.
El fuerte viento y las extraordinarias vistas panorámicas, se unen para hacerte sentir una agradable sensación difícil de olvidar.
Situada al borde del acantilado que hace de muralla natural. Pocas construcciones entre las que destaca la Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Graça.
Conveniente ir bien calzado si vas a pasear por la inmensa esplanada. Suele soplar el viento con fuerza.

Magnífica vistas y te permite dar un largo y precioso paseo rodeando todo el acantilado donde está. Y pintoresco y muy agradable ver pescadores realizando pesca en acantilado... sacando lubinas y doradas delante tuya. Muy recomendable.

Eine weitläufige Festungsanlage. Für einen Rundgang sollte man sich genügend Zeit gönnen. Der Blick auf die Küste und das Meer ist schon sehr imposant. Innerhalb der Anlage wirkt es recht trist. Ein Ausflug dorthin lohnt sich allemal.

What's not to love? It's a centuries-old historical location with a rich history connected to navigation and exploration of the new world. I wish the new buidlings (visitors' center, forthcoming museum) were built in the same style instead of modern lines, but at least they respected the color pallette of the old stone structures. Be sure to take the walk along the promontory; it's a wonderful view of the ocean and the Cabo de São Vicente to the south.

The fortress itself has interest but the most relevant attraction point are the amazing views one can get from various points along the well indicated and kept paths.
Some signs describe fortress features in Spanish, Portuguese and English languages.
The entrance fee is very cheap, definitely worth the money.

Beautiful place with significant geographical and historical importance. Not a great amount of information about the place but it is nice to explore the ruins of the fortress and enjoy the views over the Atlantic Ocean. Be prepared for the wind - visited on a beautiful August day however as it isn’t sheltered from the wind it was a little colder and very windy. Lovely place to explore though.

This looks like a large fortress, but is actually more of a wall blocking off the point. Entrance is 3 Euros and the main activity is walking around the point. Interesting historically, as it was built by Henry the Navigator as the Portuguese naval empire began to flourish. Used to train navigators, and also to protect the coast with several batteries of guns. Coolest thing we saw was locals longline fishing off the cliffs to the waters some 200+ meters below. Seems crazy but they were catching a lot of fish and there were dozens of fishermen around the point.

Fortaleza de Sagres é um local muito grandioso, atualmente estão ampliando as estruturas e contam com um amplo estacionamento. O Forte é bem grande e as paisagens são fantásticas, com rochedos, mar e praia esse local merece ser visitado.

Nicht abschrecken lassen! Vorne sieht es nach Baustelle aus, da wird gerade der Weg neu gemacht. Das Fort ist aber ganz normal geöffnet. Eintritt ist sehr günstig mit 3 Euro pro Person. Parkplätze sind kostenfrei. Es gibt auch eine Toilette drin. Unbedingt zu dem Beton-Rondell laufen, dort drin ist eine riesige Felsspalte und immer wenn die Wellen kommen wird viel Luft nach oben gedrückt. Ist ziemlich beeindruckend. Uns hats gut gefallen. Draußen kann man zudem eine Erinnerungsmünze für 2 Euro ziehen (einmal in Silber- bzw. Goldfarbend) am Automaten, zudem stehen da Getränkeautomaten.

Merece la pena entrar, cuesta para adultos 3€ y para estudiantes 1.5€. Es bastante grande y tiene muchas vistas bonitas y mucho recorrido una vez que entras. Lo recomiendo.

A par do farol de São Vicente é dos pontos mais visitados desta terra
Antiga escola de navegação detém ainda hoje uma enorme rosa dos ventos, uma capela e algumas peças de artilharia viradas ao mar
Muito frequentado todos os dias por pescadores lúdicos locais e de fora do conselho devido aos seus bons pesqueiros

Ein schöner Ort um Fotos zu machen und die beeindruckenden Klippen anzuschauen. Für 3€ Eintritt auch echt günstig. Leider waren (zumindest bei Herren wo es auch sehr unangenehm roch) weder Seife noch ein funktionierender Händetrockner, was leider den sonst sehr positiven Eindruck trübte. Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!

Tolle Festungsanlage und weitläufige Wege zum Ponta de Sagres. Viele schöne Ausblicke Richtung Sagres, Capo Sao Vincente. Die drei Euro Eintritt pro Person sind meiner Meinung eine lohnende Investition

Tem uma linda fortaleza, que se pode percorrer e admirar o mar e admirar os pontos históricos ao longo de 2 km.
Vê-se a ponta de sagres com o seu farol e o imenso mar por onde navegaram os nossos descobridores.

De lo poco histórico a visitar en la ciudad de Sagres ya que no conserva demasiado núcleo histórico en lo que es la ciudad, el acceso es sencillo e incluso en temporada alta no resulta demasiado complicado encontrar aparcamiento. El acceso al interior del fuerte no es gratuito. Recomendable disfrutar de las hermosas vistas de la costa que rodean a esta fortificación

Beaucoup de changements comparativement à l'an dernier. Les rénovations en cours améliorent grandement ce site. Magnifique vue sur l'océan et ses falaises. Promenade aménagée. Vaut réellement le détour.

Fortezza incredibile, molto ampia e a picco sul promontorio. Ingresso 3 euro, la dipendente alle 9.25 non ci ha fatto entrare subito, dato che apriva alle 9.30. Un po' di elasticità in più non avrebbe guastato. Parcheggio auto e camper ben dimensionato.

La forteza en si es poco mas que la muralla de entrada y algun pequeño edificio dentro, ya que el resto de la muralla es el propio acantilado. La mayor parte del terreno es una extension de roca y plantas bajas. Hay un paseo por todo el cabo y varios paneles explicativos de la fauna y flora del lugar. Entrada 3 euros.

Lugar maravilhoso, com uma vista espetacular! A entrada custa 3 euros por pessoa, fácil estacionamento na frente do forte. E possível visitar as duas muralhas, igrejinha e depois fazer um percurso a pé até o farol, a vista é deslumbrante. E fomos premiados na saída com um lindo arco-íris completo! Dizem que é sinal de sorte

Sort of like visiting any point overlooking the ocean on high cliffs. But this time you are in a fort that Francis Drake destroyed quite a few years ago. Drake also destroyed several other places in Spain and Portugal.

Riesige Befestigungsanlage am Ende Europas. Eintritt lohnt nicht unbedingt wegen der Festungsanlage, sondern vor allem wegen dem dahinter liegenden gut ausgebauten (behindertengerecht) Wanderweg an den südlichsten Punkt Portugals. Dank EU-Förderung zur Zeit im Ausbau.

L'ingresso alla fortezza costa 3€. Sia la struttura che le costruzioni interne non sono un granché. I bagni poi non ne parliamo. Ci stanno lavorando. Speriamo... . In compenso fare il giro lungo la scogliera merita. Oltre al panorama si possono incontrare dei pescatori che sfidano la notevole altezza a strapiombo sul mare per pescare.

Great overview! You can see the small surfer hotspot in Sages where you should definitely go.
The walk itself was great even it was longer than we expected. Fresh air and stunning views. People are fishing from the cliff. Crazy.

Bellissima esperienza, la fortezza in se è poca roba ma la passeggiata sulle scogliere fini al piccolo faro e da brividi. Anche Sagres è un villaggio interessante di pescatori, con una spiaggia silenziosa, quindi rilassante.

Fortaleza de Sagres, Sagres, Algarve, Portugal. Sus murallas coronan un impresionante acantilado. Del siglo XV. Su interior alberga la Iglesia de Nossa Senhora de Graça, una Torre- cisterna, una Rosa de los Vientos de 43 m de diámetro y el Museo de los Descubrimientos Portugeses. Y cañones!

A Fortaleza de Sagres também referida castelo de Sagres ou forte de Sagres, localiza-se em posição dominante coroando a ponta de Sagres no sudoeste do Algarve, em Portugal. First of all it's a huge place so take your time. We stayed there about two hours. There is a relative small are with buildings but behind it quite a large area with interesting spots. Breathtaking cliff views, educational info about flora and fauna and visual and audible tastes of caves and cracks in the cliff. When you see a structure looking like a maze, go in stand on the grid in the middle be quite and listin for a while. You will be rewarded especially when there are large waves. There is also a cave on the eastern wall of the Fortress. It's very dangerous to go down so I don't recommend it. But it seems to be cozy inside.

Ich war begeistert wie dieses Fort aufgebaut ist.Von vorne hohe Festung nach hinten auf Felsen. Offen und weitläufig.Eine Licht.- und Wasser umflutete Festung.Eine gemütliche Umrundung dauert ca.1,5 Std. Eintrittspreise günstig.

A historic and geographically significant place, but not that great to explore. Good views of the surrounding cliffs. If you walk out to the point you can hear and feel the breeze of the tide coming in below you ( you may even be able to see it at some times of the year - but we couldn't).

Es la fortaleza de Sagres una Muralla que cierra el paso al Cabo de Sagres, que ya es de por si una verdadera fortaleza natural, con acantilados verticales que impiden el acceso por cualquier otro sitio no sea por la citada muralla. Varios miradores permiten contemplar la inmensidad del mar, la Playa Do Tonel y en momentos sin niebla ver en la lejanía el Cabo de San Vicente. Es necesario pagar entrada para acceder al interior.
