Spend a week learning surfing here a year and a half ago, and really liked it. Great teachers. Right next to the beach. Every other place I surfed since never had the quality of lessons. Would definitely recommend.

Super Surfschool. Very patient teachers are explaining you over and over (if necessary) how to improve your skills. They are very passionate with all the things belonging to learn/teach surfing. Recommended for beginners and experienced!

Das erste Mal auf dem Surfbrett, ein mega Erlebnis! Die Guides der Ripar Surf School waren kompetent und mit Herz und Leidenschaft bei der Arbeit. Die gesamte Gruppe hat sich gemeinsam am wunderschönen Strand von Areia Branca warm gemacht und nach etwas Theorie und wenigen Trockenübungen ging es schon ab ins Wasser. Wir wurden Schritt für Schritt an die Wellen herangeführt und nach einigen Fehlversuchen stand ich dann erstmals auf dem Brett. Es war ein riesen Spaß und sicher nicht das letzte Mal.

Only took one lesson. As a beginner I got good instructions on how get up on the surfboard. Not just pop up as I previously learned but to do it in steps. Got good feedback while in the water.

Super Surfschule. Meine Kinder 14 und 16 Jahre alt hatten hier einen Surfkurs über fünf Tagen und waren begeistert. Das ganze Team war sehr nett und hat einen super Job gemacht. Die Atmosphäre war sehr angenehm und meine Kinder fühlten sich wohl.

I spent 3 days learning to surf at the school. The instructors were knowledgeable, fun and very experienced. As a first time surfer I was well taken care of. The accommodation was clean, friendly and well maintained. I would recommend a stay here for anyone who wants to try surfing.

Surf teachers are super aggressive against no-school-clients. We had various discussions about if we are allowed to surf at the beach or not. They said if we rented some boards from an other school we are only allowed to surf at their beach. There are more than 10 surf school at a same beach. Sad story how they treated foreigners.

The Surfteacher have been were unpolite, aggressive and yelled to us we have to leave the ocean and even the beach, claimed it belongs them??!!! It was absolutly unnecessary to attack us several times without having a reason, just being envy. I defenitly don´t recommend that surf school

Short version: Ripar is the best surf school ever! Score 5/5. ---- Slightly longer version: We write this review as a young couple with no previous surfing experience (or related, e.g. snowboarding or skateboarding), who took a 5-days surf course (2x 2h per day) in mid-July. There is no way we can fully claim that Ripar is the best surf school ever. (In a way probably no one can state this, without a clear (and limited) definition of "best" and "ever".) Obviously, we can't compare with other surf schools, nor can we provide an educated, generalizable view on the surfing conditions of Praia Areia Branca throughout the year, We can't even judge whether the surfing condition we experienced (like temperature, water temperature, wind direction/force, tides, wave height/type/frequency, etc.) were the "best" we could get. Nevertheless, we can't imagine any surf school to provide a better surfing experience than Ripar (and yes, we can be very picky). The surfing teachers have a passion for surfing and for teaching. They are eager to help you improve your skills (our surfing-stance was always a bit too wide/shallow, deep/high...), but they are especially focused on giving you a good time. Whether you're a fast or slow learner, an easy going or highly motivated guest, they will help you reach your personal goal and enjoy the entire ride (ha!). The best surfer is a surfer having fun. A list of positive (more "objective") points of Ripar (5/5): - 2 min walk from surf school to surf spot. - Motivated, enthusiastic teachers. This should not be underestimated. Imagine giving the same instructions to new guests every week for several years (Ripar started in 2001). - Very relaxed teachers. They will consider everything you propose. - Safe feeling (insurance, good materials, softboards, emphasis on 5 safety rules (repeated before every lesson)). - Small groups of ~6 guests per teacher. - No other surf schools on our part of the beach. - Teachers are surfers themselves. They know surfing and the ocean. - Starting times of lessons based on tides. - Fast response by e-mail during the booking process. - High value for money. - Wifi at surf school. - Note: most of the surfers are beginners. About Praia Areia Branca (4/5): - Small town. - Beautiful beach. - Don't expect much, but it has a bakery/pastery, 4 bars, several good restaurants (fish, burger, Italian, grill, Indian), a mini supermarket, a daily fresh fish + vegetable market, 2 ATM's. - Outstanding tourist office. - Bus station (to Peniche or Lisbon). - Not very touristic. - Free wifi in almost all bars/restaurants (password protected mostly by the name of the bar/restaurant). - Near Berlengas Island and Obidos. If possible, we would highly recommend visiting both. About our apartment, booked via Ripar (Cosy Cat apartment, 3.5/5): - Very attentive contact person! - Centrally located. 1-2 min walk to surf school, bus station, town center and beach. - Small apartment with living room, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower and toilet, bedroom with comfortable double bed. - Small TV with 5 Portuguese channels - Clean towels. - No wifi. - A little bit noisy. - Cheap. Other points: - For anyone interested: we could stand on our boards multiple times on our first day and we've successfully surfed on some green waves on the last 2 days. - 20h surfing is quite exhausting (depending on your effort), but more than doable. - Ripar has the option for pick-up from and delivery to the airport. - On our last day the surfing conditions were exceptionally good. Some of our teachers occasionally took a wave themselves. They love surfing and that is a beautiful thing to see. Before we booked our surf lessons with Ripar, we've done our part of Googling for the best surf school for beginners in France or Portugal. If you are in this position now, we hope this review will make your decision a little bit easier. You will definitely enjoy your time with Ripar. For us, Ripar might as well be the best surf school ever! ^_^

I've chosen the Ripar School after very long hours searching where to surf in Portugal. This school stands out among all others cause 1.Teachers are not only true masters of surfing but also great instructors. They are the ones who inspire us, tell us our mistakes and how to improve them, motivate us to try again and again till the time when we can stand on the board and finally surf. Surfing is a really tough sport. Thanks to our teachers we had fun! 2. The group is small. For 5 students we had 2 teachers. Personal approach to everyone. 3. You will get more hours of surfing for the same price than other schools. 4.The School has a great location. 2 min walk to the beach where we had lessons. If the wind was not good in the beach, our teachers drove us to another beach (10-15 min by car). Everyday we had lessons without excuses. 5. I've stayed at the hostel which is 1 min walk from the school. It was very comfortable, cause after lessons I just wanted to eat and sleep. Ripar School is the BEST school ever! 5 stars.
