What is the deal with all the Avis bad reviews and negative bias. My experience was excellent with Avis at Lisbon airport.
On arrival I went to the Avis counter and the line was about the same for all other car rental companies, if you arrive at peak hour be prepared to wait (don't forget to grab a ticket).
However, I signed up for preferred, installed the Avis app and I was able to skip the rental counter and go directly downstairs to retrieve the keys for a new Citroen C3, signed rental agreement without any pressure for extras and was on my way - total time from picking up keys to driving out 2 minutes.
Returning the vehicle took 3 minutes.

After waiting for 2 hours finally managed to get a car. Rental contract stated wrong amount of fuel, of course to my disadvantage. Child seats were not delivered to the car and we had to remind the staff. On the positive note is the quality of the car and swift drop off process.

Also „schnell“ geht bei Avis/Budget am Flughafen schon gar nichts! Ich wartete über eine stunde um die Papiere zu machen, und als ich am Schalter fragte, ob es heute außergewöhnlich sei, sagte man: „nein, es ist jeden Tag so!“ Dann oben nochmal anstehen, um den Autoschlüssel zu bekommen, und gestern bei der Rückgabe gab‘s wieder eine ewig lange Schlange von Autos (begann schon außerhalb des Terminals!) um bis zu Avis/Budget vorzudringen! Also total überfordert oder zuwenig Platz oder zuwenig Staff... jedenfalls kann ich nur davon abraten, hier ein Auto zu mieten!

Изключително съм недоволен от служителят на гишето на AVIS.
Бях подведен и ми бяха продадени всякакъв вид застраховки за автомобилът и лична застраховка на шофьора,въпреки че не ги желаех.Когато попитах за голямата сума,която бе издърпана от кредитната карта,ми обясниха,че това е депозит.Получих e-mail с договорът за наем и тогава забелязах,че тази сума не е депозит,а такса за застраховки и допълнителни услуги.
Моят съвет е когато наемате кола от AVIS,много внимателно да се гледа,какво включва договорът за наем и какво подписвате,защото тези хора са МНОГО НЕКОРЕКТНИ!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I haven't ever submitted a one star review before but I would leave a negative if I could for AVIS/BUDGET.
Waited 2.5 hours to pick up the car rental at Lisbon Airport. - tip - the other companies have no wait times.
I returned the vehicle out of hours due to a 7am flight. I later found a 301 euro charge on my invoice under 'misc. charges'. I called customer service- they informed that there was damage documented. There was absolutely no damage to the car upon return. I asked for proof of damage and have been told I will need to wait up to 15 days for more information. Luckily I took plenty of photos and a video on return so I will be fighting this all the way.
I've hired cars numerous cars and will never be using AVIS/BUDGET again.

We had a car from AVIS Lisbon airport for the first 10 days in April. Made the reservation already in January (with ADAC) and got a bit concerned, when reading the comments posted here only much later. Since this was short before the trip, prices of alternatives were much higher and we stayed with AVIS, albeit with some unease. In contrast to many reviews, our experience was excellent in any respect: No waiting time (ok, we stayed in Lisbon before and “walked in”, so no crowd from a flight); service (a young lady): attentive, perfect English, customer-oriented (we had reserved a compact station wagon, she offered us three available compact cars to choose, recommended a SEAT Leon as alternative, which was indeed brand new and turned out to be a lot of fun to drive); contract made well transparent, documentation visible directly on-screen, no attempts to sell additional options whatsoever. We found the car key waiting for us at the counter in the parking lot, and the car a few steps away, the whole procedure was as fast as we walked along. Dropping the car was equally easy: Practically no waiting time, a scan, a polite reminder not to forget anything and we could walk out. The deposit for fuel, blocked initially on our credit card, was not collected (we had a full-full option), only the charges for the toll device as indicated on the contract. We received a summary (in German) few days after returning. Top all through, we wouldn’t hesitate a second to rent from them again.

Had to wait in line for an hour and a half to pick up the rental car. Suggest registering for Avis preferred so the keys are ready because the local staff are not prepared to handle a mass amount of people traveling during holiday time.

Esperienza sgradevole, abbiamo prenotato l'auto tramite agenzia, al momento del ritiro della vettura l'addetto ci ha proposto vari tipi di polizze assicurative ma noi abbiamo risposto che non le volevamo,invece ci ha accollato tutte le polizze possibili facendo lievitare il prezzo a dismisura a nostra insaputa, ci siamo resi conto della truffa solo alla riconsegna della vettura quando ci hanno detratto dalla carta di credito la somma esagerata e gonfiata. Quello che è stato sgradevole è il comportamento dell'addetto che nonostante avessimo detto che non volevamo servizi accessori ha comunque fatto il suo interesse.

Very disappointed with AVIS.
1. When returning the car, I had paid partial in cash and was assured by the rep over the counter only the balance will be charged to my credit card. However, I found the full amount was charged to my credit card when I checked 3 days later. When I contacted Avis Customer Service over email that the wrong charge was done as there was a partial cash amount paid (and specially requested to void the first transaction and charge only the balance amount to avoid exchange fee loss), they asked for evidence (shocked that they had no record even after 1 week had past when I had the receipt). After investigating and acknowledging the partial cash paid, I was informed to wait up to 15 business days for the refund. In the meantime, I was charged the toll fee after 14 days even after they had acknowledged I had pending refund (which is more than the toll fee). The partial amount refund was finally received after 3 weeks which resulted in more than 10% exchange rate loss.
2. When I first contacted Avis customer service (as advised by the third party car rental company) to check on Avis car insurance costs for the rented car, they told me they could not advise and I would have to check with the third party car rental company. But the third party car rental company said only Avis can advise me. I am very surprised why Avis cannot advise on the “standard” insurance costs when the insurance will be taken up with them. By the time I was told the insurance costs 60€ a day for the Mercedes Vito Rental over the counter, it was already too late to cancel the reservation.
3. I have yet to receive my airlines membership miles (which I promptly received within 5 days after returning the cars in my previous reservations) after more than a month even though the Avis counter rep assured me it would be credited to my airlines membership account. The customer service over email just pushed the responsibility to my airlines.

I opted for a well renowned rental agency because of trustworthiness. Booked for 4 days noon-2-noon but arrived 45 min early. Without any explanation was handed the contract with 1 day extra charge (for one extra day covering the 45 min). Staff is slow, inefficient, unfriendly and non reliable. Have to rethink Avis as a brand...

I booked the car totally paid upfront online, when I returned it i just found a 1***$ charge on my account without explenation or even an email with the supposedly charges. Avoid it, and be aware of scams.

Avis charged me double what was listed on my reservation. They also added more than the usual nonsense fees at the end of the reservation, with no explanation of any of them. Still working to get a refund for the over-charging at least, but I'm not optimistic based on the level of service I've seen so far.
Edit: They actually refunded me the amount of the overcharge. Still a huge hassle, but at least I wasn't screwed out of $350. Changed to 3-stars because they fixed the problem eventually.

Wypożyczałem samochód w Faro i oddawałem w Lizbonie. Opłata za przejazd w jedną stronę była symboliczna. Bez problemu trafiłem również do miejsca, gdzie miałem zwrócić samochód, mimo że byłem tam pierwszy raz (najpierw używałem Google Maps, a po wjeździe na teren lotniska podążałem już za znakami "rent-a-car"). Pracownik sprawdził poziom paliwa i pobieżnie porównał stan samochodu z tym, co było zaznaczona na kartce, którą dostałem w Lizbonie (rysy itp.). Następnie na jego smartfonie musiałem coś podpisać - do końca nie wiem co, nie dostałem kopii na maila (w Faro przy wypożyczeniu podpisujemy się też na ekranie dotykowym, ale kopię dokumentów dostałem).

Wszystko jak należy. Miła obsługa, dobre samochodu (ja przynajmniej dostałem nowe, dość mocne auto i oszczędne.... byłem w szoku jak ten dziad nie chciał nic pić paliwa....5.5l/100 km w benzynie ... nie wiem jaki silnik ale na pewno mocny. Wracając do wypożyczalni.... nie czepiają się o jakieś drobne ryski jak w innych miejscach. Sprawdzają tylko czy nie ma prawdziwych uszkodzeń.

Быстро оформили документы для аренды, дополнительные услуги не навязывали, не замораживали сумму франшизы, а только объем бака бензина и аренду транспондера для оплаты дорог. Рекомендуется его взять в аренду поскольку без платных дорог передвигаться по Португалии невозможно. С транспондером вы проезжаете через автоматические КПП отмеченные зеленым без остановок.

Terrible. I booked a car that supposed to be cheap abd paid in advance. At the pick up they told me there were 50 euros more to pay at the end of the rent. When I dropped the car off, they wanted me to pay 100 eur, the reason was "taxes". I obviously started to complain and the girl at the desk showed me then an amount of 58 eur, sayiny "this is the best I can do". Not professional and not clear, never again!

Bom atendimento, ótimo carro. Acredito que poderiam ter mais funcionários na retirada do carro. Quando fui pegar o carro só tinha 1 funcionário, e demorou um pouco para entrega das chaves.
No dia da entrega, não consegui atendimento telefônico para tirar dúvidas sobre o horário da entrega e quantidade de combustível.
Mas recomendo a empresa, e devo voltar a utilizar em breve..

Wait was long for the car, car given was absolutely shocking, clearly the cars are not maintained.
My car had about 30-40 scratches and dings (one as big as my head) and anything above 30kph it makes a terrible noise from the rear. We thought we wouldn’t make it back to Avis because the wheel was going to fall off.

They have the cheapest cars online... that means the queue is endless (the other car rentals have no queues). It's like camping to get a ticket to see your favourite artist, so if you come with someone, take turns to go to the toilet, get something to eat, maybe even sleep a bit.

3 HOUR WAIT IN AUGUST!!!
Avis always gives good service but not in Lisbon. After a 3 hour flight Amsterdam-Lisbon you should bare in mind that retrieving your car takes at least another 2 hours at Lisbon airport. I was in disbelief the entire time. Unbelievable AVIS HEADQUARTERS DOES NOT INTERVENE. Just looking at reviews should give management a wake up call.

Not the best Avis I have used.
The Iberia General Manager sent me an email a few weeks later asking me to fill out a survey, as (quoting the email):
"At Avis 'We Try Harder'. This means we are continually trying to improve the service that we give to you - our customer. With this in mind, we would very much like to know your views of your car rental experience with us."
I did, but no response.Ha!
The first car we were given had an unserviceable air conditioner, so after driving around the airport block, we returned it for another, better functioning one.
A month after returning the car, EU100 was deducted from my credit card by Avis for no apparent reason. I have emailed avis to query this transaction FOUR times (the last one in Portuguese - thanks Google Translate).
Still no reply.

Muito descontente com a Avis, além de Eu ter que trocar o carro no dia seguinte que eu aluguei por que o porta malas estava com uma colônia de fungos, sem condição de uso e muito perigoso para a saúde, não me deram um carro com combinado, contratei um carro a diesel e me deram um a gasolina ( que é muito mais cara), tiveram má fé na hora de me falar o valor do aluguel e na hora da devolução paaguei 200 euros a mais.
Eles usam estratégia para que vc no fim não possa reclamar.
No contrato usam a palavra ( sem chumbo) ao em vez de gasolina pra que vc não perceba.
No contrato mostram o valor parcial, sem os acréscimos que ela colocam sem vc saber que aparece em outro campo. Vc assina e não pode reclamar!!
O telefone do balcão da Avis não atende de forma alguma é o telefone de apoio ao cliente não consegue resolver nem ajudar em suas dúvidas, pedem pra vc ir até a loja, o de perdi 2 dias de viagem para resolver o problema do carro sem condição de utilizar por falta de higiene .
Não recomendo a Avis por falta de transparência e cuidado com o cliente!!

Plus de 2 h d'attente à l'arriver devant le comptoir alors qu'une heure de réservation avait été décidée en ligne.
Des frais rajoutés à n'en plus finir, un prix annoncer sur le site de 300 euros qui finis en 500 euros. Des informations sur le site qui ne concordent aucunement avec celle de l'agence sur place pour l'age des conducteurs. Des frais prélevés sans raisons qui ne correspondent a rien dans les "explications" à la prise du véhicule quelques jours après la location.

Worst experience renting a car. Hipólito Lima was completely unprepared to deal with costumers. Car was reserved and paid for and we were avis preferes but they guided to 3 different lines and we lost 1h30m in the process. Avis management team should be ashamed.

We were served quickly and efficiently both when collecting and dropping off our car. Documents were all ready, tank full and they even sent someone to pull the car up to the door for us.

Scamed!!! rented a car at Porto aeroport. They gave me the keys at the desk and a copy of the contract almost illegible. It was 21.50h the park park was dark and it was raining. I took pictures of the car from all sides except the trink and the rear right because the car was parked too close to another car. I had to take the car from the spot to put the bags on the trunk and rear sit, and left to my destination, trusting that everything i ok. I had the car for 2 days, i was the only one driving the car. When I delivered the car in the Lisbon aeroport they said there was a scratch on the right back wheel, 2 cm long that was not registred. I know that I didnt do it , explain the circunstations of my pick up. They said ok, just sign the pad please. After 10 minutes i have received a email, charging 300€ on my card. I feel scamed, I made a fool out of myself saying that I had photos from when picked the car just to remember that I had no pictures from that wheel because the car was too close from another car for me to take a picture, it was night and dark and raining. Please be carefull they will will you pay for damage that other people made. Make a film of the car at the pick up! Left a reclamation on the book and surely will will never rent from Avis or Budget again.

We were tricked into signing for a very expensive insurance. It was said it was a safety deposit, but we were never refunded. When I complained, they stated we had bought insurance! The lady at Avis Faro Airport (Portugal) said up to 4 times that we did not have to worry, and that we would get it all back, since it was a safety deposit. We just had to sign for the release of the car on a white computer screen. Days later my signature is on an insurance purchase contract!!! Stay away from this company! Cunning and dishonest at best!!!!

Polecam omijać wypożyczalnie szerokim łukiem. Starali się za wszelką cenę wydrzeć dodatkowe pieniądze pomimo wcześniejszych, bardzo konkretnych ustaleń. A to podatek lotniskowy (bzdura), a to dodatkowe ubezpieczenie (pomimo posiadania jednego). Przedstawiciel rozmawia po angielsku, a umowę prezentuje niby przez przypadek po portugalsku. Po powrocie z wakacji z konta pobierana jest kolejna kwota na rzecz Avis wg. za koszty autostrad. W umowie stoi, że koszty autostrad pokrywa koszt wynajmu. Sprawa zgłoszona do reklamacji, gdzie na odpowiedź jest 2 tygodnie. Odpowiedź przychodzi po 5 miesiącach i oczywiście odmowna z lakonicznym wyjaśnieniem. Avis w tej chwili nie różni się niczym od tanich wypożyczalni, które naciągają klientów jak tylko mogą.

Nobody ever rent a car from this place. They will steal your money. Not only that they will give you a car with zero oil (AND THEN NOT EVEN REIMBURSE YOU FOR THE 33 EUROS YOU PAID TO FILL IT UP)
They hit me with an "upgrade fee" on my credit card invoice.. and then I disputed it and they mentioned that it is listed on the contract that I signed.. YOU GO LOOK AT THE CONTRACT AND THERES NO UPGRADE FEE.
THIS COMPANY IS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE... I ENDED UP PAYING 965$ CAD for a 4 day rental.. it was the worst experience ever.

Funcionarios mal educados, pouco profissionais, agressivos, ausência total de simpatia, nenhuma cordialidade, .... Enfim, muito mau.
Felizmente existem mais rent a dar num raio de 5 metros, por isso recomendo tudo menos AVIS
Dois empregados conseguem estragar a imagem de uma empresa.

Avis Car rental in Lisbon is not recommandable. Unfortunately, a generally unpleasant experience from booking, pickup to return. Hustle types surprises at every turns.
Only advice to give is to choose an another car rental company. You will be better served at better cost, even if the displayed cost favors Avis, be wary. "It's a Trap".

Um 11:56 weggeschickt worden und wieder anstellen müssen, weil das Auto ab 12:00 gebucht war, was eine Lachnummer. Dann haben wir 20 Minuten gebraucht bis wir alles ausgefüllt haben.

Uma eternidade para o levantamento do carro 1h30

Antes de fazer uma reserva fiquei com receio devido às críticas encontradas aqui, mas mesmo assim reservei... posso dizer que foi simples, deram-me um carro novo não esperei nem 5 minutos e paguei a quantia que estava na reserva online.
Fiz a reserva diretamente no app da AVIS.
Quando entreguei o carro devolveram-me a franquia, irei usar a AVIS denovo definitivamente

Horrible staff and service. Veemently denied having reservations, already PAID, or info that was assured in the previous day that would. THE VOICE WAS RAISED against the costumer for an already paid and assured service !!
Wouldn't reccommed to my worst enemy!

Fatal! Llego para devolver el coche y sorpresa! Estaban haciendo obras y dos dias antes al coger el coche nadie me dijo nada. No habia ningun cartel, me lo tuvo que explicar un obrero. Luego llego al parking donde tenian que estar y no habia nadie, ni si quiera un cartel. Suerte que iba con tiempo si no pierdo el vuelo.

I recently hired a car in Lisbon and ran into some car trouble. The staff have not been helpful. I did not receive a rental contract via email. Avis have also deducted a very significant amount of money from my account without any correspondance or any invoices and therefore I have not been able to make any insurance claims. They do not answer their phone and they do not respond to emails. This must be a company theme as Avis Australia have not been helpful in helping me track it down now that i am home. They neither respond to emails. Honestly really disappointed and I will not hire a car from Avis ever again.

Ao alugar um carro em Lisboa fui informado para aceitar um viaverde e não aceitei por pensar que pedágios em Lisboa fosse igual ao Brasil, ou seja poderia pagar no pedagio, ao descobrir que não era assim, retornei a Avis 10 minutos depois e não tinha pego o carro ainda, ao informar o atendente que gostaria do Viaverde o mesmo disse para informar ao responsável que entregaria o carro que assim o mesmo colocaria o viaverde e assim que entregasse o veículo pagaria pelo mesmo. Assim viajei três dias passando por viaverde e ao entregar o carro fui informado que o mesmo estava desativado. Ao informar a Avis minha situação informaram que não podiam fazer nada, ou seja, me viro para resolver. Postura lastimável da empresa. Fiz no aeroporto de Lisboa. Estou muito decepcionado com a empresa, ao solicitar quem fez meu contrato me recusaram a informar o nome. Lastimável experiência e postura da Avis. Conselho: Não aluguem carro aqui.

Couldn’t have been easier! After reading some of the negative reviews I was a bit anxious with the rental. Clerk spoke perfect English, was very helpful and in and out in 15 minutes with a brand new car. If you are Avis preferred and you book directly with Avis you avoid the number taking and the long lines in the terminal. As I understand it if you use a 3rd party to book the car your preferred status doesn’t help you.

When we arrived at Avis, the service was prompt and friendly, however they up sold us a vehicle with a GPS built-in that was not very reliable. My Android phone provided much better direction. I think the upgrade occurred because they probably did not have the portable GPS on hand. In hindsight I would have called their Bluff and said no I want the car I paid and arrange 3 year old car because I doubt they would have been able to provide it and would have given me the built-in GPS without charging an extra $300.
Then when we went to return the car the Avis shop had relocated completely and there was no one at the counter however there was someone to receive a car and he was quite. It was pretty odd though that we had no notification but no one would be at the desk if we had any questions or concerns. The shop is completely closed down which to me is another indication as to why they up so this a car with built-in GPS because they knew there was going to be no one ever received the GPS.
Otherwise no problems that we know of course we just returned the car yesterday and I'm flying home now. It apparently takes about two weeks before you receive a credit of your deposit so we have not had the final bill I guess.

They are cheaters.. They are crook... The agreed price was 130 euro.. They draw 295 euro from my credit card.. the only reason was ı was late for 30 minutes.. But this was becouse of their personel.. they deliver car late, and waited 25 minutes for return queue..
DON’T CONFIDE YOUR CREDIT CARD TO AVIS ... THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY.

Can we put 0 stars for these crooks ?
I've rented Avis for 9 years as a Preferred plus and this is the rental that made me stop renting with Avis for ever.
The sell you an insurance that stats "You're covered if something happens" but you're actually not. I as charged over 1000$ for a small scratch. No one is available on site to speak, they send you to the office where no one is available.
After many attempt to settle it with customer service, I disputed the charge with my credit card company and was re-credited for the amount.
I'm never EVER renting with Avis again.
I rented with Sixt on my next visit to Portugal and it was much much better.

Except the fact that I stood about 2 hours in the line in order to get the car papers from the Avis operator, and another 30 minutes in a 2nd line in order to get the key - so that I can drive away with the car :))
Everything was OK: the car, the road, the view ...
Another thing: initially I have asked for a Peugeot 208 and I get a Renault Captur - which was very OK :)
The return of the car was very quick ;)

Car was good, return was good, getting the car was a nightmare. Took over 2 hours, the other rental agencies were nowhere near as busy and Avis seemed like they were not ready for the volume of customers, they should have anticipated this from the bookings.

Pessima esperienza in Budget (che condivide l."attività con Avis) di Lisbona Aeroporto. Avevamo prenotato una Fiat 500X con copertura assicurativa aggiuntiva. Al momento del ritiro avvenuto all'ora prevista la nostra auto non c'era e ci hanno consegnato una BMW serie 1 ancora bagnata e con croste di sapone, dicendo che era in perfetto ordine ed era un affare. Sebbene abbiamo poca esperienza di noleggi auto, abbiamo comunque controllato la carrozzeria perché l'abbiamo visto fare al cliente precedente e abbiamo dovuto segnalare che l'auto aveva un paio di segni sulla carrozzeria. Alla riconsegna dopo 30 ore ci hanno imputato un segno sul bordo di un cerchione che non era sicuramente opera noatra e nonostante le nostre proteste si è trasformato subito in un prelievo di 270 euro sulla nostra carta di credito. Quindi concludendo: hanno individuato due clienti stranieri al primo noleggio, con (speriamo) copertura assicurativa e ci hanno tirato il pacco, liquidandici con un indirizzo email in cui scrivere la nostra triste storia.

Absolutely disgraceful to make people stand here for hours to pick up a vehicle they paid for weeks ago. Only 3 staff helping, and occasionally 1 or 2 leave for break. Clearly all these complaints fall on deaf ears as it looks to be the norm, but something needs to be done. Ticketing system might work, but some of the numbers have different letters before the numbers... So I have a suspicion that the customers with reservations, are not priority. I was given number A209, when they were at A179. 1hr later a customer next to me got D035 when it was at D032. So something doesn't make sense.

They are scammers pure and simple! I had booked an Audi A4 or similar but once I got there they tried to give me a mitsubishi jeep! They told me to pay 20 euros extra to get a BMW 4 series. The car was fine but once I returned it and was waiting in the terminal I was charged 730 euros with no explanation! I complained and got a response in 5 days with an invoice that is not comprehensible! I complained again and got a response that they will respond in 15 working days!! My credit card payment is due and I am not sure whether to pay it and get it over with or wait and be charged interest by my CC company. This is crazy

My good friend and her family were forced to wait for three hours outside in 98 degree heat while the car they had reserved was given away to another customer. From there, employees attempted to scam them into paying more than the price of the reserved car for a smaller car. While they attempted to ask for a discount for the smaller car they were met with disrespect and general rudeness even though logically it makes sense to pay less for a smaller vehicle. If this place was bad enough for my friend to text me to write a review along with her so other people wouldn’t get the same awful treatment her family received, you should be able to gather what sort of services you’re in for as a potential customer.

These guys are crooks, plain and simple. The short version: you pick up a car in a dimly lit garage and are expected to note every flaw on a car that looks like it has been through a demolition derby. When you return it, they go over it with a fine toothed comb to pick out any issue that wasn't noted at pick up so they can charge you for "the damage."
The long version: was told we were getting a Mercedes C200 that "had no record of prior damage." As soon as they pulled it up I could already see a huge dent & scratches in the rear bumper. I had the employee note all of the flaws I could see in the dark garage - the aforementioned dent, a scratch along the roof that was the length of one of the doors, and major scuffing on one of the rims. Part of me considered asking for a different car, but given that my family & I had already waited over an hour to get our car I didn't bother. After driving off the airport grounds, I realized they had given me a car that was almost out of gas! So I had to immediately find a gas station to refuel. The car drove fine the rest of the trip. Upon returning it, they tried to pin the dent in the rear bumper on me. I handed them the report that I had from pick up which exonerated me. Then they found a scratch on the bottom of the front bumper which I must have missed (I had absolutely no issues while driving the car) and proceeded to charge me 645 Euro for it, which I have promptly contested with my credit card company upon my return home. We loved our visit to Portugal, it's just unfortunate that this was easily the worst rental experience I have ever had.

It is hard to believe the service here is as poor as it was. We rented a car at the Lisbon airport from Avis which we were to go to the airport to pick up. We called and called to find out where at the airport to go but the phone was never answered. We went to the airport drop off location and were sent to the terminal. We found an Avis counter and waited 10 minutes only to find they were serving customers based on numerical order from tickets obtained at another (main counter). There was no sign explaining this. We went to the main counter and took a ticket. The wait for an agent was 2 hours and 10 minutes. The woman guiding where to get a ticket said there is usually a wait of two hours and appeared quite indifferent to what poor service they provide. If there is a wait of this nature they should notify customers of this in advance. It would help if they answered the phone. Very seasoned travelers, we have NEVER had such poor service from a car rental company anywhere. Beware.

Please be very careful what the customer service rep tells you and makes you sign. Ordered a car through Expedia with a quote that I showed rep. Don’t know why she did this but upgraded our car, put roadside assistance service on contract and extra taxes without us requesting it. Told her I didn’t want to pay extra and she said we would not. Total was more and asked why so much, she said it was a hold for car but when car returned, charge would be marked down if no damages. LIED!!
Tried to have Expedia help and that’s how I found out about extra charges. No refund because of signed contract. So watch what you sign with this company. Also worst wait time to receive the car. Now I know why-trying to trick customers into extra charges when exhausted from flight and waiting in line!!

גרועים שרות פשוט גרוע, קיבלנו יחס משפיל, לא יאומן שנותני שירות מתייחסים בצורה כזאת לא הולמת,
הגענו 20 דקות לפני המועד שהזמנו את המכונית, לא ביקשנו שיתנו לנו את המכונית לפני הזמן( למרות שיש חברות שכן היו עושות זאת)
אבל כן ציפינו שיעדכנו במחשב שלהם ויבצעו את כל תהליך הקליטה שלהם כך שבשתיים עשרה בדיוק נקבל את הרכב, אבל איש השרות לא הסכים לקבל אותנו דקה לפני הזמן, בשעה שתי דקות לשתיים עשרה הבחור יצא לסיבוב כשהוא יודע שאנחנו ממתינות לו, הבוס שלו דיבר בטלפון ולא הסכים להתייחס אלינו רק אחרי רבע שעה הוא הגיע והסכים לקבל אותנו, את המכונית קיבלנו בעיכוב של ארבעים וחמש דקות.
וכששאלתי מדוע אז הוא הסביר שהזמן נחשב מהרגע שהוא מתחיל לעדכן במחשב.
בושה וחרפה,
בנוסף לכך אני הזמנתי רכב שלא היה להם כפי שהזמנתי, אז נתנו לי בסוף מכונית שאם היתי מזמינה אותה מראש הייתי משלמת פחות כסף, לטענתם היא באותה הקבוצה.
פשוט חוויה גרועה.
לא ממליצה ללכת לחברת אביס.
מעניין שבהחזרת הרכב היו מאוד יעילים ומאוד מהירים. כך כשזה תואם את האינטרס שלהם אז הם זרזים ויעילים.
לא ממליצה על חברה זאת.

Had a very long wait to get to the desk just to collect the car (2hrs)their queue management was shocking, then the car type I booked wasn't available so they provided me with something I wasn't too happy with. Returns where difficult as the road signs are quite small and inconspicuous (No fault of avis). Then there was a good 25 min wait to return the car key. I'll probably be avoiding avis in future especially at Lisbon.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT rent from them.
Waited 2.5 hours to pick our car up and were told by employees that this was normal for the day and time we were there. If the company is aware of this, why have they not worked to fix it? every other car rental company in this airport was much faster. We were told there wasn’t enough space in the airport to open more service windows (there were 5 staff to serve lines of hundreds) yet we walked by othe empty windows in other locations that aren’t being used. And if that is the case, stop taking reservations when you know you don’t have the staff to handle it. Absolutely disgusting dispicable business practices. On the other hand, the staff were all very polite and helpful and I hope they get jobs with other agencies soon because they don’t deserve to be as overworked and mistreated as they are as a result of poor management.

Slow service and poor customer service. We rented from this Avis location 3 times and always have to wait at least 1.5h in line to pick up the car. Laaaang kø, tilsynelatende uten grunn. Ingen kommunikasjon mellom de ulike stedene. Må stå i kø først for å få papirer, så for å få nøkkel, så viser det seg at de to ikke snakker sammen, så det er også venting for å få barnesete.
Ikke like hissige på mersalg som enkelte kan være, men ble belastet for noe ekstra vi ikke ba om likevel.

4h d'attente à l'arrivée alors qu'on avait une heure de réservation à 17h...on a eu la voiturea 21h... Ensuite il avaient oublié de nous donner les papiers du véhicule donc on a du se taper un allee retour. Même pas dexcuse ou de geste de leur part pour ces désagréments... Mon compagnon a été prélevé 2 Fois !!!! Et impossible de se faire rembourser car ils font genre de rien comprendre.
Au retour ils nous on pris la tête pour une rayure qui était déjà là quand on a pris la voirure.
Bref, si jamais on ne se fais pas rembourser ce qu'ils nous ont prélevé en trop on ne reviendra pas et surtout on ne le conseillera pas car trop désagréments et aucune compensation...

They haven't been answering the phone for the last two days. I have the correct phone number. This should tell you enough about the kind of customer service you can expect. They also gave me a car with broken AC. The car refused to start on the second day and we had to wait for roadside assistance to come.

The staff aren't very friendly or helpful and seem in a rush to get you out. While we were quoted one price online, it quickly almost doubled when we arrived there.
The check in staff member helping us kept rushing through everything and was a little deceptive. We were recommended a toll pass since the staff member told us paying tolls by cash was not possible (which it was...and we drove throughout the whole coast) We only got the pass since it seemed like the only option. We were also told we could change out payment option upon return, but no one granted it.
The car was good - clean and good mileage-- but the management and customer service needs to improve. It is a pity because it is very basic simple things that need to be fixed in order to have a much better experience.

We had 33 people waiting before us to be helped. After about 1,5 hours it was finally our turn. Apparently this was the case for all car rental companies at this airport. Employees were very kind though and the cars were fine.

À Lisbonne, je déconseille avis!
Enfaite tout à bien commencé, un bon acceuil au rentals à l'aéroport + voiture spacieuse! Mais voilà que les surprises commencent..
1. Voiture de location plein de sable et biscuits sur les sièges
2. La Via verde que j'avais choisi n'était pas visible dans la voiture de location. Je suis retourné à l'aéroport pour voir si c'est normal surtout que quand je passais un péage la lumière s'affichait orange au lieu de vert + le prix comme chez tout le monde. Ils m'ont fait faire courir à droite et à gauche pour à la fin se permettre de dire que c'est normal, pas besoin de se faire des soucis même quand je passe un péage et que la lumière s'affichait orange au lieu de vert! Le service la fut très désagréable surtout que je leur expliquais bien la situation et le monsieur me dis de me calmer alors qu'il prenais tout à la légère et il me prenait bien pour une conne (confirmé par des témoins)
4. Le parking dans cet aéroport pour les rentals sont horriblement étroits

Nous venons de rendre voiture à l'agence avec la surprise de payer le DOUBLE du prix initialement annoncé :
- 45€ d'essence, prix d'un plein, alors que portant la voiture était remplie au 3/4. Mensonge lors de la réservation qui précisait qu'ils facturaient au prorata.
- des "fees and surcharges" qui tombe du ciel
- prix annoncé sans TVA
Un simple sourir un coin quand nous demandons des explications, sans nier que la politique de l'entreprise va dans ce sens.
Bref, UN VOL !! À FUIR

Io mi sono trovato benissimo, e non capisco le recensioni negative: il segreto è non acquistare le loro assicurazioni, che sono di solito un mangia-soldi. Bisogna invece prenotare l'auto con agenzie intermediarie tipo AutoEurope (da Skyscanner) e stipulare con loro l'assicurazione Full Cover a 8€ al giorno, che azzera la franchigia e ti permette di non sborsare 1€ in più del dovuto. Il check-in al desk dell'aeroporto è stato velocissimo e in pochi minuti ho potuto ritirare l'auto, esattamente delle dimensioni volute. Mi hanno dato una Renault Clio con pochi km, ho fatto 1100km in 4 giorni spendendo 84€ di gasolio in totale. Sulla carta di credito mi hanno trattenuto solo il pieno di carburante (60€), che poi mi hanno riaccreditato una volta riconsegnata l'auto col pieno fatto da me. Decisamente un ottimo servizio.

Te sacan dinero desde que ENTRAS POR LA PUERTA. fui con el coche para recoger en el aeropuerto, te ofrecen un seguro ya que sino dice que que te toca pagar des tú o te den,
un seguro que cuando le dice que no lo quieres el de 54€/día me lo rebajan. +26 /día.
PAgo 318 € por adelantado: por el seguro, por si no llenas el depósito, por una silla de niño (que no la acepté cuando la vi 15€ /día),
Coche bien
gasolina no estaba lleno y devuelvo lleno.
Espero que algún día me devuelvan la los 72 +silla 80= 150 € que pague de mas y eso que les di una tarjeta para que sigan cargando a su antojo.

Just had a terrible experience in your downtown branch. Firstly me and my husband were called liars by supervisor after informing him we had called the branch earlier in the day to extend our reservation, secondly we were charged a ridiculous 700 euros for a 5 hour extension inspite of being told on the phone it would be just 18 euros and thirdly the suervisor took the final payment WITHOUT prior consent (no slip was presented to sign/authorise final payment) whilst we were trying to resolve the problem. We have used Avis all over the world and have NEVER been treated so badly......so disappointing Avis!!!!!!

J'ai réservé ma voiture avec AVIS car je suis d'habitude très content du service en France.
Mais là, à l'aéroport de Lisbonne, c'était catastrophique. Une très grande inefficacité, et beaucoup beaucoup d'irritants.
- Le temps nécessaire à la prise en charge du véhicule a été totalement déraisonnable, plus d'une heure
- La personne a essayé par tous les moyens de vendre des services en plus. J'ai dit que je ne voulais rien, mais elle a continué.
- La voiture n'était pas prête, et nécessitait un lavage. On a encore attendu un bon 1/4 d'heure.
A noter qu'au retour de la voiture, c'était là très efficace et très bien. Et le tarif était très faible. Mais l'expérience a été totalement gâchée au début, à la prise en charge du véhicule.
J'aurais préféré payer plus cher et ne pas être embêté ainsi !

Au départ louer une voiture pour 49 euro 4 jours à l'arrivée 221 euro ... a savoir prix indiquer sur Internet sans tva ensuite assurance sans franchise 28 euro par jour que j'accepte mais néanmoins facture salée je descend à lisbonne régulièrement je ne prendrai plus ce loueur ....

Too many hidden charges. The one who helped me was unprofesional and not friendly at all. Not willing to explain what kind of charges being charged unless I sign for the credit card authorization. Is this the way Avis doing their business?

Ladrões...
Deram me um carro danificado e não fizeram o check.
Quando entreguei cobraram pelos danos.
Ainda me disseram que não fazem check antes de entregar o carro só cliente.
Fui lá reclamar de disseram para não me preocupar com nada . Quando fui a minha conta tiraram me £405 quando o aluguer do carro teria de ser apenas 233€ por 1 semana.
Liguei para a companhia e nada puderam resolver. Tive que falar com o meu banco explicar a situação é só assim consegui resolver situação.
AVIS desceu bastante de nível. Isso na minha opinião foi um roubo e não há outra palavra para isso.

Avoid. Booked trough airline (turns out to be via Cartrawler, no complain there). Picked up the car, declined the extra insurance. Upon returning i was charged 160 euros and change by the garage guy. Went to the desk to clarify and they pull out a completely different rental agreement with extra charges. Showed them the right one. Still, the amount was still reserved on my credit card. It was unlock only after it expired ( about 1 month)...

Awful - if you value your time avoid at all costs!
Waited 1hr 15 mins to be seen at counter after getting my ticket (which if you don't do can easily add more time to your wait). 20 minutes later I got my rental agreement and went to the garage to pick up the car, only to be told by the agent that two accounts had been opened at the exact same time and my car was already gone. All in all it took 3 hours to drive away.
Absolute joke.

Horrible ! Personnel peu aimable et absolument pas humain. Accueil déplorable.
Surfacturation sans en comprendre les raisons. Nous avons payé beaucoup plus au final. Ils n'ont cessé d'ajouter des frais sans prendre le temps de nous expliquer à quoi ils correspondaient.
Nous déconseillons.

Despite some really bad reviews or their experiences at the Lisbon airport, we were very happy. Paid a small amount for an upgrade to a VW Passat. It held 3 adults and tons of luggage with ease during our 11 days on the road. However, get a smaller car if you don't have these needs, or parking and maneuvering will be difficult. The woman who helped us explained every detail, including which toll lanes to use. The only bad thing was the Garmin GPS, which was hopeless in the countryside. We endedup using our phone mapping, and Avis took the charge off.

O serviço de reclamações da resposta em até 15 dias e se questionas as suas respostas voltam a te colocar novamente em espera por novamente 15 dias.
O carro estava sujo.
Tinha feito uma reserva pelo site, e quando fui levantar o carro ao balcão me exigiram fazer um deposito por um valor que achei absurdo mas que me prometeram que ao devolver ele iriam descontar só a parte proporcional a um seguro que eu contratei a maiores (redução de franquia), qual minha surpresa quando vejo um cargo em conta muito maior que o que me tinham reportado por conceitos os quais já estavam incluidos na reserva que fiz pela internet.
De momento sigo sem resposta e vá fazer mais de um mês que aluguei o carro.
Deixem de enganar as pessoas sendo ambiguos nas informaçoes que oferecem e com a excusa de despachar rapido acabam por não explicar nada.

Avoid this company and this station!
Normal counter closed so had to pick up car at Avis preferred counter. There I learned that they could not help as there are preferred members waiting so I had to wait considerably. Well, don't close the regular counter for normal clients then. The WORST however was the fact that they told me that the "full tank policy" was not required as they offered the service to tank the car and charge the regular street price which was true on the reserved amount. However they did not mention that a FULL tank was charged irrespective how much remained in the car. That was told only after all my luggage was cleared. I was free to tank myself but AVIS hopes that you will not go through the hassle to put all the luggage back in the car or that you are running to catch a flight. I WILL NEVER USE AVIS ANYMORE.

We were in a hurry and there was a long line behind us at the Airport in Lissabon. We only want to pick up a rental car after a long and stressy arrival. They told us to sign here and there - and explained the rudimentary details of the rental contract. Nevertheless they have charged me for over 350 € after the return of the car. Neither me nor my wife were aware that we have booked further services. My wife speaks fluently three different languages.. we would also make this statement in front of a judge.
I have already contacted my legal insurance, which covers rental contracts. They have hired a lawyer in Portugal for further clarifications, whether there is any chance to get a part of the money back.
This was my first and last booking via AVIS! The next time I will take SIXT again, which has also a contract via my employer.

I have to write a positive review because nobody takes time to ever do this. I had no problem here from check in to return of the vehicle. Staff was very friendly, I would give 5 stars only if I had of been briefed better on the toll system and which lane to drive in etc.... Found this out casually talking to the guy delivering the car, otherwise wouldn't have known. I have yet to receive my toll charges so maybe review will change. As of now I can say we were pleased we chose Avis over Goldcar.

Me cuesta mucho alquilar el coche porque la aplicacion falla constantemente. Cuando llego el servicio proporcionado es pesimo, mal trato y luego el coche en general esta bien pero con 38 grados en la calle apenas funciona el aire acondicionado.

AVIS : 264€ pour un pare-chocs griffé !
En janvier dernier j’ai loué chez Avis Lisbonne aéroport une Micra pendant 11 jours au tarif période creuse attrayant de 5€/jour, soit 55€ au total : voiture récente, bon état, bon service, de quoi être satisfait bien qu’ayant peu roulé.
Hélas lors de la restitution des griffures sont constatées sur l’angle droit du pare-chocs arrière (cf. photo jointe). Bien qu’en ignorant la cause – probablement le contact d’un tiers dans un parking – je reconnais ma responsabilité, sans réaliser dans la cohue et la précipitation matinale que la pénalité qualifiée de minimale était de 264,45€ TTC dont près de 80€ de « coût administratif » !
Je considère pour ma part que ce procédé de facturation plancher élevée pour un dommage aussi bénin est abusif et indigne d’une marque premium, ainsi que la méthode de débit immédiat sans présenter sa carte, jouant sur l’effet de surprise d’un passager pressé de prendre son vol. (Si je m’en étais aperçu auparavant, j’aurais facilement fait disparaître ces marques minimes. S'agit-il d'un nouveau modèle économique où avec les pare-chocs peints actuels, le rendement des pénalités dépasse celui de la location ?).
Ma lettre de protestation s’est heurtée à un refus.

I had to pay nearly 200€ for one small car a day. Their damage check was loose when I rent a car, but it was strict when I return a car. In addition, there is unknown fee on my receipt. It was the first experience. You had better find an another rent a car shop !!

Be very careful with this deceitful office. I was charged for Roadside Assistance when I returned to the UK. At no point during the rental agreement was this even mentioned. It was either added to my agreement after signing or it was already on the agreement and not pointed out to me. Make sure you check carefully for any extras added without your consent.
